Chapter 227: Chapter 208: I found him, but he can’t find me.

Xiao Mo stopped, his gaze falling on the woman standing before him.

He waved his hand lightly and ordered, “Go fetch a jar of fine Osmanthus Wine.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.” Wei Xun quickly bowed and withdrew.

After Wei Xun left, Xiao Mo walked up to the woman’s side and asked, “What might Fairy Jiang be looking at?”

Jiang Qingyi didn’t look away. Still gazing upward, she asked with a hint of curiosity, “This watchtower of yours, what is it used for?”

“This watchtower doesn’t really have a grand purpose. It’s just a place where past Sovereigns of Zhou would come to look out from a high place and clear their heads when they grew weary of handling state affairs,” Xiao Mo replied.

Jiang Qingyi nodded lightly and then asked, “Then does Your Majesty usually come here as well?”

“Not really.” Xiao Mo smiled and spoke truthfully. “First, I don’t really have any state affairs to handle, and second, this watchtower is too high. I’d probably be half-dead from exhaustion by the time I walked to the top.”

Jiang Qingyi turned her head, her eyes blinking as she gazed at Xiao Mo.

“What is it?” Xiao Mo asked, a little puzzled.

“It’s nothing.” Jiang Qingyi shook her head and turned her gaze back to the watchtower.

Xiao Mo then suggested, “Would Fairy Jiang like to go up and take a look?”

“Didn’t Your Majesty say you didn’t want to go up?” Jiang Qingyi asked.

“Going up alone is boring, but it’s different if I’m accompanying a friend,” Xiao Mo said with a smile.

Jiang Qingyi was silent for a moment, then agreed, “Alright.”

The moment she spoke, Jiang Qingyi grasped Xiao Mo’s wrist, and with a single leap, they landed lightly atop the watchtower.

The two stood side-by-side at the top of the watchtower, gazing out at the view before them.

A cool breeze swept past, gently lifting the hems of their robes and brushing against their cheeks and hair.

Though the wind carried a slight chill, it was more refreshing than anything else.

From atop this watchtower, the entirety of the Imperial Palace unfolded before their eyes.

Although the Zhou Kingdom was only a small nation, its Imperial Palace was built to be quite magnificent.

This was also the first time Xiao Mo had ever seen the Imperial Palace in its entirety with his own eyes.

Jiang Qingyi spoke quietly, asking Xiao Mo, “Aren’t Your Majesty’s sleeping quarters on the other side? What brings you here?”

Xiao Mo rested his hands on the railing and gazed into the distance. “Today, the Empress Dowager invited me to Lingxin Palace to reminisce. I also had to try on my wedding attire. I just got out.”

“Oh.” Jiang Qingyi merely acknowledged him with a soft sound.

Silence fell between them once more.

But Xiao Mo didn’t feel the least bit awkward.

In the time they had spent together, moments of quiet silence had become commonplace. This Fairy Jiang was not a person of many words to begin with.

After about half an incense stick’s time, Jiang Qingyi suddenly spoke again.

“Your Majesty’s… Empress… is she beautiful?”

“Hm?” Xiao Mo paused, surprised she would suddenly ask about this.

“She’s considered to be very beautiful, I suppose…” Xiao Mo replied. “After all, she’s known to the world as the Zhou Kingdom’s greatest talent and its number one beauty. It’s just that I’ve never actually seen her in person.”

As he spoke, Xiao Mo’s voice grew softer, and he sighed gently. “Actually, this Miss Yan is quite a pitiable person, in a way. She’s blessed with both talent and beauty, so she might not have wanted to enter the palace at all. But born into one of the Noble Families, her fate was likely not her own to decide.”

“Heh.”

The moment Xiao Mo finished speaking, Jiang Qingyi let out a cold laugh.

“What’s the matter, Fairy Jiang?” Xiao Mo sensed something strange in her tone.

’This Fairy Jiang seems to have an opinion about Yan Ruxue.’

“It’s nothing.” Jiang Qingyi turned her head to look in another direction, a hint of displeasure showing on her face.

“…”

She didn’t elaborate, and Xiao Mo didn’t press her.

Having spent so much time with this Fairy Jiang, he had gradually grown accustomed to her occasional mood swings.

Just as the two were continuing to gaze quietly at the distant scenery, Wei Xun arrived below the watchtower, holding a jar of Osmanthus Wine. He waved his hands up at them continuously, trying to get their attention.

“What does he want?” Jiang Qingyi glanced at Wei Xun and asked coolly.

“I was the one who just ordered him to fetch a jar of fine Osmanthus Wine,” Xiao Mo explained with a smile.

Jiang Qingyi’s slender brows furrowed slightly.

The next moment, she reached out a hand. With a beckoning gesture toward the wine jar in Wei Xun’s hands, the jar of Osmanthus Wine flew up in response, landing steadily in her palm in the blink of an eye.

She broke the seal on the jar, turned, tilted her head back, and began to drink. The clear, cold liquor trickled down her fair jawline, slightly dampening the collar of her robes.

Casually wiping the corner of her lips, Jiang Qingyi tossed the wine jar to Xiao Mo and said simply, “Drink.”

Xiao Mo: “…”

“What?” A faint, almost imperceptible threat laced Jiang Qingyi’s tone. “Is it because I’ve already drunk from it? You find it distasteful?”

“Not at all.” Xiao Mo smiled and took the wine jar. “If Fairy Jiang herself doesn’t mind, what is there for me to say?”

With that, he lifted the jar and also tilted his head back, drinking freely.

Watching Xiao Mo’s lips press against the very spot where she had just drunk, a faint blush involuntarily crept across the woman’s fair cheeks beneath her veil.

Xiao Mo lowered the jar, wiped his mouth, and praised, “This wine really is excellent.”

“It’s decent,” Jiang Qingyi agreed softly, leaning lightly against the railing.

“By the way, is something troubling you, Fairy Jiang?” Xiao Mo asked suddenly, looking at her profile.

Jiang Qingyi tilted her head and asked in return, “Why do you suddenly ask that?”

“Because I often see you lost in thought, as if you have a lot on your mind,” Xiao Mo replied in a gentle tone.

“It’s nothing,” Jiang Qingyi snatched the jar of Osmanthus Wine from Xiao Mo’s hand, turned her head, and took a drink. “I’m just looking for someone.”

“Someone?”

“Mhm.” Jiang Qingyi bent over, resting her arms on the railing.

“Is this person very important to you?”

“Not important.”

“…”

’This Fairy Jiang,’ Xiao Mo thought, ’seems a bit contradictory.’

’If they’re not important, why are you still looking for them?’

“What’s with that expression, Your Majesty?” Jiang Qingyi asked, her eyes narrowing as she saw his speechless look.

Xiao Mo shook his head. “Nothing. I was just wondering, after you find this person who is both important and not important, what will you do?”

Jiang Qingyi took another drink of wine.

Perhaps it was because of the wine, but she spoke more freely today than usual.

“After I find him…”

Jiang Qingyi’s fair palm gripped the wine jar tightly.

“I want to tell him that I’ve grown up, that I’m not that little girl from back then anymore. I’ve fulfilled the promise I made and become a Sword Cultivator who can stand on her own two feet.

But.

You’re already gone.”

Listening to her gentle words, Xiao Mo smiled. “This person really is very important to you, Fairy Jiang.”

“I said! He’s not important!” Jiang Qingyi said sternly.

“Alright, then he’s not important.” Xiao Mo went along with her. “But I believe you will definitely find him, Fairy Jiang. And he will surely be gratified by what you have achieved.”

“Find him… And what if I do?”

Jiang Qingyi tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Her star-like eyes, sharp as swords, seemed as if they had been weathered by wind and sand for a thousand years.

After a long moment, Jiang Qingyi turned her head and looked directly into Xiao Mo’s eyes.

“I found him.

But he can’t find me.”
