Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce

He had clearly seen Chloe Reed, and his gaze was grim as he stared at her.

Chloe Reed didn’t get out of the car; she just drove straight in.

A moment later, her phone began to ring. She glanced at the screen and rejected the call.

’You’ve got to be kidding. He’s obviously here looking for trouble. Why would I get out of the car just to get chewed out?’

A flicker of derision crossed her eyes.

’Charles Reed is here this late... don’t tell me it’s about Sunny Reed?’

’Did she go tattling to them again?’

’How pathetic.’

Chloe Reed took a shower and got into bed, ready for sleep.

But then, there was a knock at the door.

Her brow furrowed. She walked over and saw the figures of Charles Reed and the property manager on her video doorbell.

Her expression turned cold.

’They just let anyone in?’

’Did they ask for my permission?’

’This complex is unreliable. I’m going to find a new place to live.’

The doorbell kept ringing, and as time went on, Charles Reed’s expression grew darker and darker.

The property manager said, ”Sir, your daughter might already be asleep. Why don’t you try calling her, or perhaps come back tomorrow?”

In a low voice, Charles Reed said, ”Just open the door.”

A troubled look appeared on the property manager’s face. ”I’m afraid we can’t do that, sir. We don’t have the authority to open a resident’s door without their permission.”

”I’m her father!” Charles Reed said. ”I’m here to see my own daughter. Are you telling me I can’t go in?”

The property manager was put in a very difficult position.

The tension was palpable.

Sweat beaded on his forehead.

’It’s obvious this father is here looking for trouble. And we’re the poor saps stuck dealing with it.’

Charles Reed banged on the door. ”Chloe Reed, open this door!”

He grew even angrier, and his face darkened further.

He turned to the property manager. ”Hurry up and open the door. What if something happened to my daughter in there?”

The property manager wiped the sweat from his brow and said, ”We’d need the police present to do that.”

”Then call the police,” Charles Reed stated.

Just as he said that, the door opened.

Chloe Reed stared at them, her face devoid of expression. ”What do you want? Came to my door in the middle of the night instead of sleeping? Are you here to curse me?”

Fury burned in Charles Reed’s eyes as he strode past her and into the apartment.

Chloe Reed frowned, a flash of impatience in her eyes.

Once the door was closed, Charles Reed said, ”You’ve got some nerve. I came all this way to see you, and you just ignored me. Do you even have any respect for me as your father?”

Chloe Reed watched him coolly. ”I used to, but not after you started favoring Sunny Reed again and again.”

”Her name is Reed now!”

Chloe Reed shrugged. ”That doesn’t make her one of us.”

After a pause, she asked, ”I’m genuinely curious, why are you all so good to her? What’s the real reason? If you had adopted a son, I could have at least understood it as a preference for boys. But to adopt a daughter and then pour your entire heart into caring for her... I really don’t get it.”

But Charles Reed ignored her question and cut straight to the point. ”Did you take your sister’s sapphire earrings? Give them to me!”

”’Take’?” Chloe Reed raised an eyebrow. ”Walker Grant won those for me at an auction. He gave them to me. How did they suddenly become hers just because Sunny Reed says so?”

Charles Reed sank onto the sofa, a flicker of weariness and resignation in his eyes. He said, ”Chloe, be the bigger person here. If she wants them, just let her have them. It’s just a pair of earrings. Why make such a big deal out of it?”

”Then I’ll make a big deal out of it.” Chloe Reed’s expression turned icy. ”Why should I have to give her whatever she wants? I want them too! Why can’t she be the one to yield to me for once? She calls herself the ’older sister’ all the time, but does she act like one in the slightest?”
