The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Sun Yeshu wasn’t familiar with the group of educated youths, so she didn’t strike up a conversation. She simply brushed past them.

She hadn’t even fully passed them when she overheard a voice.

”Ruoyu, you’re the lucky one. If I had known Gu Jiaojiao was so capable, I would have tried to get on her good side back then.”

The young woman said, her face full of envy.

Becoming a teacher at the commune meant a monthly salary and grain rations. Who wouldn’t want a job like that?

Gu Jiaojiao had landed such a great post, only to turn around and give it to Chen Ruoyu. The other educated youths were filled with envy and regret.

If they’d known Gu Jiaojiao was so generous, they would have done whatever it took to get on her good side.

This wasn’t the first time Chen Ruoyu had heard such catty remarks. At first, she tried to explain herself, but she eventually realized it was useless. Now, she didn’t even bother responding.

Inwardly, however, she was grateful to Gu Jiaojiao for the job.

Just then, another girl spoke up. ”It’s not too late for you to start sucking up now. Everyone knows how capable that couple, Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan, are. They know important leaders. For them, getting someone a job in the County Town is as easy as saying the word.”

”That’s true. Maybe I’ll go pay Gu Jiaojiao a visit tomorrow and try to get on her good side?”

Of course, she was only joking.

Although their words were tinged with envy, there was no real malice behind them. They knew they were neither friends nor family to Gu Jiaojiao, so there was no reason for her to help them.

The words were spoken casually, but one listener took them to heart.

They went straight to Sun Yeshu’s core.

The last time that important official had dinner at Leng Yuan’s house, she had wanted Leng Qingtian to go and make an appearance, but no one in the Leng Family had agreed.

’She didn’t know why, but she wanted to keep trying. If Leng Qingtian could get a job in the city, she’d gain so much prestige. When her baby was born, they might even be able to get city registration for the child.’

At the thought, Sun Yeshu’s heart began to race with excitement.

Back then, city dwellers ate commodity grain, a status symbol in itself. Just the thought of it was prestigious.

Sun Yeshu didn’t waste another moment. She went home, dropped off her basket, and headed for the foot of the mountain.

When she reached the main gate, she found it shut tight. The walls were so high that she couldn’t see anything inside.

Sun Yeshu felt a pang of resentment. ’Leng Yuan’s house is even nicer than the main Leng Family residence. These walls alone are one of a kind in the entire Qingshan Team.’

She didn’t knock right away. After all, she and Gu Jiaojiao weren’t on good terms; Gu Jiaojiao might not even open the door for her.

Sun Yeshu circled the property. As it happened, she spotted Gu Jiaojiao weeding in her private plot. Her eyes lit up. Placing a hand on her stomach, she walked over, making sure her pregnant belly was prominent.

Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t concerned with work points. She had already gathered two basketfuls of pigweed, earning four work points for the day. After a short rest and a couple of wild fruits, she came out to do some weeding in her private plot.

The sun was no longer so scorching, and a steady breeze made it pleasantly cool.

She had only been crouched down working for about ten minutes when she heard footsteps.

Gu Jiaojiao looked up and saw Sun Yeshu walking over, clutching her stomach.

’If I remember correctly, Sun Yeshu is only two months pregnant.’

However, she paid the other woman no mind, giving her only a single glance before returning to her weeding.

’Even though hers is the only house at the foot of the mountain, the land outside doesn’t belong to me. I have no right to stop people from passing through.’

Sun Yeshu had deliberately made her pregnant belly conspicuous, worried that Gu Jiaojiao might not have heard the news. She never expected Gu Jiaojiao to just give her a single glance before turning back to her work.

’Did Gu Jiaojiao not realize I’m pregnant?’

’Then again, Gu Jiaojiao’s never been pregnant. She probably didn’t get the hint.’

Sun Yeshu took a few more steps forward and said in a weak voice, ”Oh, dear! My back is killing me. I had no idea being pregnant was this difficult.”
