Chapter 1408: Chapter 1408: Knocking at the Door

Ying Xi stopped the carriage from afar, “Miss…”

Shu Yu followed her gaze, and saw many scholars standing at the entrance of the small courtyard. Not only them, but also people who looked like house servants and maids were waiting at the door. In addition, many neighborhood women were sitting there chatting on small stools.

So many people, it looked like they were waiting for Meng Yunzheng to return.

Shu Yu didn’t expect that being the top scorer in just an academy examination could have such an impact, making so many people wait.

This was just for a scholar; if he were to pass the scholarly examination or become the top scorer, wouldn’t the doorstep be completely worn out?

At that moment, someone ran over and shouted, “Why are you still waiting here? Scholar Meng is at the Yuelai Restaurant, exchanging knowledge with many candidates. It looks like they’ll be talking late into the night, so he probably won’t be back tonight. Go and have a look.”

After saying that, the person turned and ran towards the Yuelai Restaurant.

The people at the courtyard entrance looked at each other, and the scholars quickly chased after him, with the house servants and maids hesitating a moment before dispersing.

The remaining neighborhood women were still there; after all, they couldn’t go to the Yuelai Restaurant to discuss knowledge, and it was close to home, so they continued to wait outside.

Shu Yu thought the entrance would soon clear out, but unexpectedly, the women gathered even closer.

She could only say to Ying Xi, “Let’s go through the back door.”

The back door originally had people watching too, but upon hearing of Meng Yunzheng’s whereabouts, they all left, leaving it empty.

Shu Yu breathed a sigh of relief, got off the carriage, took out the key, and opened the door.

Once inside, Aunt He heard the commotion and came to greet her, “Lady Lu.”

She looked behind Shu Yu, didn’t see Meng Yunzheng, and seemed puzzled, “Sir isn’t here?”

“He met some fellow candidates, and hasn’t come back yet.”

Aunt He nodded upon hearing this, yet soon she grew excited, “Lady Lu, do you, do you know that Sir…”

“Became the top scorer, right?”

Aunt He nodded vigorously, “Yes, yes, Young Master Meng is truly amazing. Little Three Yuan, many people are saying his future is bright. Just after you left this morning, the bailiff came to deliver the news. I was stunned when I heard it. Fortunately, I reacted in time, and as soon as the bailiff left, I closed the door; otherwise, all those people outside would have barged in.”

Shu Yu tilted her head and looked at Aunt He. The latter was smiling happily at first, but being looked at like this made her feel a bit uneasy. She looked down and examined herself, “What, what’s wrong, Lady Lu?”

“Nothing, it’s just that I heard Yun say that normally Aunt doesn’t speak much, but now I’ve heard you say so much in one breath, it seems Aunt is truly very happy.”

Aunt He was taken aback, and then felt a bit embarrassed, “I guess I am a bit noisy.”

“Aunt should not say that. This shows Aunt is genuinely happy for Yun, treating him as one of your own.”

Aunt He touched her head, feeling inexplicably comfortable whenever Lady Lu spoke.

She chuckled twice, saw Shu Yu carrying the meat heading towards the kitchen, and hurriedly followed, “Lady Lu, allow me, let me take care of this.”

“Today is a good day; I want to cook something nice myself. Aunt, please help me out.”

“Alright.” Having a fiancée really makes a difference.

Aunt He gathered everything into the kitchen and took the chicken out to the courtyard to prepare it.

Shu Yu went to change clothes and was just about to start cooking when there was suddenly a knock at the front door.
