Gun of Ashes

Everyone stood still like statues, clearly indicating that the enemy this time was more troublesome than they had imagined. They came well-prepared and acted swiftly.

”During the battle, the power lines were destroyed. To restore power, many people died, Swift was injured, and Arthur is trying to establish contact with the outside world, but due to interference, the signal is interrupted. Now we can only rely on ourselves.”

As Red Falcon spoke, he signaled Eve to follow. In the face of this sudden attack, they temporarily transformed this safe house into a fortress, resisting the wandering demons.

”According to Arthur’s speculation, the enemy should belong to Lawrence’s faction. After all, only they possess the Revelation, which can create inferior Secret Blood that turns people into demons. Moreover, this enemy should be similar to Lawrence, possessing a strong individual combat ability... he might also be a demon hunter who defected with Lawrence.”

Red Falcon, usually careless, couldn’t help but appear unusually serious at this moment.

”Only in this way could the enemy infiltrate our heavily defended area and enter the research zone, and he is likely carrying inferior Secret Blood with him, turning the patients in the research area into demons.”

”The most troublesome part is not just this. For this operation, we have made thorough defenses. How could this enemy still infiltrate so easily? If we have no internal traitor, he must possess immense power, perhaps rivaling Lawrence. This would allow him to perfectly conceal his movements, even killing anyone who might see him.”

The enemy is far more complex and powerful than anticipated, and an even worse part Red Falcon hasn’t mentioned yet.

If all this is as speculated, then what is that person’s purpose? Moreover, if the enemy is still lurking in the research zone, judging by his ability to accomplish all this, the current armament is difficult to counter him. But why hasn’t he come to kill Red Falcon and the others? What is he doing now? No one has an answer.

Gunfire continued but was gradually weakening.

This is the research zone of Black Mountain Hospital, essentially just a medical research institution. It doesn’t have the sufficient armory like the Perpetual Motion Pump. Most working here are doctors, and the weapons currently in use were brought by soldiers during the deployment adjustment.

There are worse things that everyone is aware of, but no one speaks out.

Black Mountain Hospital does not have sufficiently strong defense forces. However, it is protected by the Anti-Meme. Under the long-term operation of the Cleaners, the endless rain cleanses this city known as Old Dunling, erasing everything related to Black Mountain Hospital from people’s minds continuously.

Except for inside the Purification Mechanism, the people outside know nothing about the location or internal situation of Black Mountain Hospital. But this time is different; the enemy clearly knows it well, thoroughly understanding the structure here, feigning a frontal attack on the surface while actually heading directly to the research zone.

Eve remained silent. There was no need for Red Falcon to say these words to her, but he still spoke, as if something awaited her next.

Crossing over the makeshift fortification, Eve saw a man sitting in the corner. At this moment, he looked so exhausted yet focused intensely on the design plans, trying to find a slim chance of survival in this intricate research zone.

”Arthur.”

Red Falcon called softly.

Arthur slowly raised his head. Seeing that Eve was unharmed, his cold expression softened slightly but soon solidified again.

Eve’s survival was only temporary. If no other plan was devised, everyone would perish here.

”The power has been restored, the entire area remains locked down, and we still haven’t determined the enemy’s location. However, judging from the recent crossfire, most of the demons within the research zone should have been drawn in. With power restored, the large lift area can be used again. We can reach the surface directly from there, and based on the allocation of defense forces, there’s an unmanned armor on standby there.”

Red Falcon reported the situation. Although everyone might die here, some people shouldn’t, such as Eve, who has significant research value, or perhaps...

Looking sideways, in Red Falcon’s field of vision, not far from here, a section had already been prepared. Owes sat quietly in a wheelchair, observing all of this, while a doctor on the side was trying to awaken another patient.

He was a silent child, but judging from Arthur’s protective stance during command, his value was no less than Eve’s. Red Falcon had heard of Eve’s value, but who was this boy?

He had never seen this boy before, yet even more strangely, though he really didn’t know this boy, Red Falcon felt a sense of familiarity every time he saw him, as if he were an old friend.

”We aren’t sure about the situation on the surface, but at least it’s better than staying here, isn’t it?” Red Falcon’s voice tried to sound as casual as possible. ”Like stepping from a narrow hell into a broader one... at least the air on the surface is fresher, right?”

Arthur seemed amused by Red Falcon, smiled with a shake of his head, then said.

”I understand, get the equipment ready... give us a moment of privacy.”
