Gun of Ashes

Chapter 398: Chapter 50 Mutual Aid Association

The cold wind of Old Dunling slapped against the cheeks. Perhaps it was time for emissions, as the fog on the streets was noticeably thicker. They surged and rolled, with shadows appearing one after another, breaking through the mist and hurrying along the streets.

When Heracles spoke those words, the chaotic traces instantly became clear in Lorenzo’s mind, from cause to effect, from the newcomers to all their intentions.

Lorenzo naturally knew what happened in the north, where he killed Lawrence, leading to the search for the ”Revelation.” Likewise, it attracted not only the Purification Mechanism and the Evangelical Church but also those exiles. Thinking of it this way, everything became reasonable.

Shermans didn’t come to Old Dunling to escape. He was also looking for the ”Revelation,” an opportunity that could enable them to regain everything.

At this moment, Lorenzo was not concerned with capturing the Shermans but with warning the Purification Mechanism. The fight over the ”Revelation” involved more than just these people. There were also those lurking in the shadows.

Lorenzo quickened his pace. He needed to bring this information to Arthur as soon as possible. Caution is one thing, but in matters like this, Lorenzo still needed the might of the Purification Mechanism.

Perhaps this was a life of toil. Lorenzo felt he had spent the whole day moving, from one place to another.

Arthur had never revealed the exact location of the Purification Mechanism’s base. Initially, Lorenzo didn’t mind, but in the current situation, it turned out Arthur was also defending against him. After all, with the power of a Demon Hunter, infiltrating and wiping them out in one fell swoop would be too easy.

But for the sake of cooperation, Arthur made some concessions, such as giving Lorenzo a specific contact point. However, Lorenzo preferred to call that place an employee dormitory.

Rushing into the building on the street, the guard recognized Lorenzo and, according to the pass rules, let him through. Remembering the number on the doorplate, Lorenzo kicked the door open with one foot and shouted loudly.

”Joey!”

With a crisp sound of cocking, a few people flipped over the sofa using it as cover, then raised their guns at Lorenzo. Just as they were about to fire, they saw Lorenzo’s face.

”Mr. Holmes?”

Some of them recognized Lorenzo, and amidst their terror, they slowly lowered their guns. Some looked relieved, while others appeared anxious and resentful.

”Can you knock like a normal person?”

These individuals were permanent staff here, and this was one of the dozens of bases that the Purification Mechanism had scattered throughout Old Dunling.

They were well hidden, appearing from the outside like an ordinary residential building. But if an unlucky thief attempted to steal something, they probably wouldn’t even get past the security at the entrance.

Although it was called a base, Lorenzo preferred to refer to it as an employee dormitory. If Joey didn’t have any extra tasks, he would usually be here.

The slight hum of a machine could be heard. In the living room, a steel column pierced through, its surface polished to a shine. Through alternating gaps, the gears and machinery underneath could be seen turning, while indicator lights flickered. As Lorenzo approached, it began to emit a sharp ringing.

This was a large Geiger counter. One of the base’s tasks was its maintenance and data collection, with tables piled next to it covered in records and reports.

Beyond the living room door was Joey’s bedroom. Many might envy Joey, who needed only a few steps to get from bed to his workstation.

Lorenzo referred to this place as an employee dormitory because of this. For some reason, Joey’s relations with his family seemed rocky, as he only went back to celebrate the Divine Birthday. Ordinarily, he stayed here, working and sleeping together, devoted to his job.

Lorenzo remembered that Red Falcon also lived in such an employee dormitory, though now he was swamped with work, running all over Old Dunling, busy as hell.

”Where’s Joey?”

The stationed employees couldn’t touch the core of events; Lorenzo had to notify Joey.

”He went out,” someone said.

”Went out? Did he have a sudden task?” Lorenzo asked. Without any urgent tasks, Joey shouldn’t have left.

”Probably not. To be precise, he’s off today,” said another. They knew Lorenzo was an ally, perhaps even their superior, and answered all his questions.

”At a time like this, your work still allows for vacations?” Lorenzo found it astonishing.

The whole underbelly of Old Dunling was about to erupt into chaos, while Lorenzo envisioned people with dark circles pushing themselves to the brink of death at their desks. How could there be vacations? Isn’t it absconding from work?

”Resting... for a day should be possible.”

They didn’t quite understand Lorenzo’s urgency. There was a strict information confidentiality level within the Purification Mechanism. Often, after a mission, people at their outermost layer didn’t actually know what they were doing.

This method effectively prevented the spread of contamination, like at this base. These personnel only knew to record the real-time index of the large Geiger counter; they were utterly unaware of the more crucial aspects.

”Where did he go?” Lorenzo asked again.

The unreliable aspect of the Purification Mechanism appeared yet again. Losing this contact, Lorenzo could only head to the Lower City District to find Bola.
