Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The wall beside the outlet opened while Ren was still sitting on the wet floor.

Stone slid back into the wall, leaving a low passage. He looked from it to the entrance behind him. That door remained closed. Above the repaired support, water continued through the trough at its ordinary flow.

Ren stood and checked the collar around the pier’s base. It hadn’t shifted. He wiped his hands on his coat, crouched beneath the opening, and went through.

The passage ended in a small, dry room.

Text covered part of the far wall, arranged in four blocks beside a diagram. The drawing showed an inlet, a channel on piers, and an outlet feeding a larger basin. A short line marked the basin’s rim. At the other end of the room, fitted blocks outlined another doorway.

Ren stopped in front of the writing. The System relayed the heading privately.

[RECORD: KEEPER’S PROCEDURE. SUPPLY: THE UPPER CHANNEL TO THE RECEIVING BASIN. SECTION: INLET TO OUTLET.]

The instruction in the first room had told him to maintain a duty when its keeper couldn’t return. Here was the procedure for that duty. He followed the lines as the System conveyed their meaning.

Walk the supply from the inlet to the outlet at each turn of the water. Check the piers, the joints above them, the mark at the outlet, and the drain.

If a pier fails, brace it from outside at the height it has settled to. Do not wedge the break. Carry the water past the failed span until the brace holds alone.

Tend the growth at the supply’s head. It holds the bank above the inlet and keeps the water clear.

If the keeper cannot maintain the supply, send word to the receiving basin before the water falls below its mark there. The keeper’s line supplies the next keeper.

Ren went back to the second block. His fingers were still stiff from shaping the collar. He had reached the same solution, but only after putting roots into the fracture and making it worse.

The warning was explicit: do not wedge the break. It would have saved him that mistake if he’d had it before starting.

He looked at the diagram again. Small cuts marked the joints between channel sections, and the pier beneath each one. The drain was shown separately below them. Whoever had preserved the procedure had included the parts he had needed to watch while the water rose.

A shorter entry sat beneath the instructions, separated from them by a thin horizontal cut.

Interruption. The third pier failed while the keeper was absent. No word was sent. The receiving basin fell below its mark before the failure was found. A keeper of the line was summoned. The failed span was supported and the supply restored.

Ren glanced toward the passage. The damaged pier in the first room had been the third from the outlet. This entry gave no direction for its count. It might describe the failure the room had been built to test, but he couldn’t tell whether that was the same channel.

He returned to the words about the receiving basin. The interruption had gone unnoticed until the supply was already low. Someone downstream had needed the water while the keeper was away.

The entry named no settlement and gave no account of what happened there afterward. It ended when the supply was restored. Ren traced the diagram’s channel with his eyes, from the third pier to the basin, then checked the notification step above it.

Beneath the incident entry was a single custody annotation.

Custody transfer recorded during the dismantling of the networks.

He paused over it. Halvern had described that dismantling in his study. The annotation placed this record’s transfer in the same period, but gave no names or destination. Nothing linked the water supply to the sealed system, or explained who had held the record before it reached this wall.

Ren checked the space beneath the line. There was no further entry.

The diagram included a plant at the head of the inlet.

Its roots spread through the drawn bank above the channel. A short stem rose from them, with narrow leaves cut individually into the stone. Ren leaned closer. This was the growth the procedure told its keeper to tend, though the heading gave him no name for it.

”I know that plant, Ren.”

He kept his eyes on the carving so Kaia could see it.

”Where from?” he asked her privately.

”It grew where—”

Her voice stopped.

Ren waited. She had begun readily enough, but no more words followed. He remembered what she had told him before: there was something she knew and couldn’t tell him. He wouldn’t make her try to explain it again.

”All right,” he said.

He stayed with the drawing a little longer. He wanted to know where she’d seen those leaves, and whether the plant still grew there. He left both questions unasked.

When she said nothing more, he turned back to the procedure.

If the keeper cannot maintain the supply, send word to the receiving basin before the water falls below its mark there.ℯℯ𝑙.

Aldric’s message had ended with two lines.

If you are hearing this, then I held.

Hold yours.

Ren had understood the demand to endure. The wall gave him something more practical to set beside it: a supply to inspect, a support to brace, and people who needed warning if the keeper could no longer do the work.

It didn’t tell him what Aldric had held. He read the notification step once more, then took out his route notes and copied it onto a fresh page. He left the rest of that page empty.

Outside, Vesper had a time after which she would take the others to the landing and report him overdue. He had made those arrangements before entering. The keeper in the incident record had left no warning that reached the receiving basin in time.

Ren rested the notes against his forearm and read through the procedure again, this time considering what following it would require.

The work extended beyond fixing one pier. Someone had to walk the channel whenever the water turned, inspect the supports, and keep the inlet clear. The growth at its head needed tending. The receiving basin had to remain reachable by whatever means the keeper used to send word.

He compared the diagram with what he’d seen outside. There had been a working channel and a blocked one, a basin, and an overflow dropping into a hollow. He hadn’t followed either the working channel to its source or the overflow to its end. The drawing alone couldn’t place the receiving basin in that unseen ground.

Nor did it show how a message was carried there.

He could understand the repair instructions after the first room. Taking responsibility for the whole supply would require more than that. He would need to know where it went and how to reach whoever depended on it.

For now, the wall had given him a procedure to examine. He had made no promise to keep the works.

He checked his slate. There was still time before Vesper’s agreed departure.

Ren put the notes away and crossed to the doorway at the far end of the room.

Its blocks were flush with the wall, like the entrance beside the basin. There was no handle and no marked sluice frame beside it. He stopped short of the seam.

Aldric had described a different means of reaching him. That road ran through the bloodline, with its threshold at Stage Seven. It had no physical door to find. The fitted stone in front of Ren gave him no reason to think he had reached it here.

He kept his hands at his sides. Before he touched the blocks, the System relayed the entrance’s condition.
