Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The damaged pier shifted under the heavier flow.

Ren saw the outer edge of its base sink a little. Above it, the trough sagged, widening the joint until water poured down the stone face. He knelt in the spreading water and put both hands on the floor beside the fracture.

He needed to support it before taking any weight off. Otherwise, it could settle again as soon as he let the load return.

Earth Law drew stone up beneath the damaged base and around its sides. At the transplant, he had lifted the soil without compressing the roots inside it. Here he worked just as carefully around the split block, bringing the new stone into contact without forcing the broken halves together or raising the pier.

The collar thickened beneath the lower edge. Ren stopped shaping it when the base stopped moving.

He kept his hands there while another sheet of water crossed overhead. The pier still leaned, and the joint still leaked, but neither worsened under that load.

The inlet offered an easier way to stop the pressure. Stonewall across its mouth would cut off the water and let the trough empty. It would also interrupt the flow he had been told to maintain. Deepsnap could break an opening for the excess to spill into the basin, but that would destroy part of the channel.

Ren turned back to the supported pier. He would have to work with the water still running.

The fracture remained open above the collar. Fine grit washed from it whenever the trough shifted.

Roots could hold loose ground together. Ren laid his palm over the crack and grew a few thin strands into it, intending to bind the broken sections while the stone beneath carried their weight.

As the roots thickened, the two faces of the fracture moved apart.

He felt the shift under his hand. Overhead, the trough rocked on the pier, and the leaking joint opened wider. Water fell past his shoulder. At the outlet, the level dropped below the cut line.

Ren withdrew the roots before they could spread farther. Then he raised the collar higher, supporting the exposed sides and bringing stone beneath the displaced edge. The movement stopped. Water continued pouring through the joint.

He had given the roots no loose soil to spread through. Every bit of growth had pressed against the fracture, forcing apart the stone he was trying to hold.

He checked that the last strand was clear, then left the crack alone.

The collar could keep the base in place. It couldn’t spare the damaged span the weight of the water crossing it.

Ren reached into that flow with Water Law.

He supported a short length of water above the pier, letting it travel toward the outlet while taking some of its weight off the trough. He kept the working close to the stone. Lifting the stream clear would leave him carrying more than he needed to.

As the pressure eased, the trough stopped rocking. The gap narrowed, though it still leaked. Ren adjusted the flow across the joint until most of the escaping water continued downstream instead.

The outlet rose toward its mark.

With the span partly unloaded, he extended the Earth working beneath its low edge, giving it a broader bed to rest on. He held the new support at the trough’s settled height. Trying to straighten the whole length now would disturb the adjoining sections.

He eased a little weight back onto it. The joint held its width.

That gave him time to look at the floor.

Water had spread around every pier, carrying loose grit toward the drain. A ridge of it had gathered at the mouth, and the sound of the draining water had weakened.

Ren kept the Water working on the damaged span while he checked the support once more. The raised stone stayed in place when he released his Earth Law. He watched it through another increase in the flow before moving away.

At the drain, he crouched and swept the grit out with his fingers. Water tugged at his hand through the cleared opening. He drew the sediment aside, away from the current feeding it, and worked along the mouth until it ran freely again.

The water around his boots stopped rising.

He stood slowly, keeping his attention on the trough. Moving between the pier and the drain had made the Water working harder to hold. For a moment, too much escaped through the damaged joint. He steadied the flow before returning to the support.

The inlet was still increasing.

Its heavier sheet struck the trough and sent ripples along the whole length. The outlet ran above its mark now. That was allowed during the cycle; the level had to return to the line when the cycle ended. Ren watched the joint instead, taking more of the water’s weight whenever its edges began to move.

The new stone held beneath it. He checked where the collar met the floor, then the sides of the split base. No fresh gap appeared.

His forearms began to tremble. He loosened his fingers and lowered his hands, but the strain remained. Holding the water at the damaged span took constant correction as the flow changed, and each check of the stone or the drain drew his attention away from it.

At home he could have put the craftsperson on the support and Riptide on the water while he cleared the drain. Here, by the time he finished one check, he needed to make the first again.

He drew a deeper breath and wiped his neck against his shoulder.

The inlet held at its heaviest flow. Ren waited for it to ease, then stopped watching it so closely. He couldn’t tell how long this part would last. The pier and the outlet gave him more useful things to look at.

Once, he glanced at the entrance behind him. The way back to it was clear.

Water struck the leaking joint, and he turned his attention to the trough again.

When the inflow finally eased, Ren kept his working steady.

The level at the outlet fell toward the cut mark. He watched the inlet long enough to make sure it was continuing to thin, then began releasing the weight he held.

He did it a little at a time. Each adjustment let the trough press more firmly onto the support beneath its lower edge. The joint seeped, but its sides stayed still. Water ran down the pier in a thin line and crossed the floor to the drain.

The collar took the load without his Earth Law holding it in place.

Ren released the last of the Water working. He stayed beside the pier, hands lowered, and watched the outlet. Its surface settled at the mark. The inlet had returned to the flow he had seen on entering.

The cracked base remained tilted inside its support. Nothing had been straightened or made whole, but the trough carried the water without shifting.

He waited for the room’s answer.

[TASK COMPLETE. INFLOW CYCLE ENDED. CHANNEL INTACT. OUTLET AT MARK.]

[RECORDED: FLOW MAINTAINED TO THE OUTLET THROUGHOUT. EXTERNAL SUPPORT REMAINS IN PLACE.]

The System relayed those lines as it had relayed the entry conditions. A separate observation followed, private to him.

[OBSERVATION: THE ROOM’S COMPLETION MEASUREMENT REGISTERS EVIDENCE OF REPEATED RECOVERY IN THE HOST.]

Ren read it twice.

He knew what the System could be recognizing. He hadn’t died in this room, or drawn on Ouroboros during the task. Whatever the assessment had detected was already part of him when he entered.

The line didn’t say the room understood what it had measured. It didn’t tell him whether that measurement remained in a record someone else could read.

He looked around the chamber, from the inlet to the closed entrance. There was nothing he could identify as the source of the reading.

Ren sat on the wet floor beside the third pier and rested his hand against the collar. Water still moved overhead, its vibration faint beneath his palm. He stayed there until his fingers stopped trembling against the stone.

[NEXT TASK: MAINTAIN THE ASSIGNED DUTY WHEN THE KEEPER CANNOT RETURN.]
