Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren found the craftsperson at the northern landing, checking a joint beside the next load of cut stone. Orun and Sethe waited for it to move before lifting their block. Behind them, the old migration arch stood dark above the sand.

”I need to register a name for the world,” Ren said when they had set the block down. ”I’d like to hear what people here call it before I choose.”

The craftsperson looked up. ”The whole world?”

”Yes.”

”I use the Hearth names. That’s where the stone goes.”

”Those will stay.”

The craftsperson ran a hand along the edge it had been checking, then pointed toward the blocks waiting farther up the landing. ”These are for the warm-water approach. The load going out now is for the screen. Keep those clear when you send someone for stone.”

”I will.”

It nodded and returned to the joint. Orun turned the block enough to show Ren the destination mark on its side.

”This still needs to say which Hearth,” he said. ”Whatever you call the world.”

”It will.”

Sethe adjusted its grip at the other end. ”And which shore when someone asks for another load. Across means a different place depending on where you’re standing.”

Ren watched them lift the block and carry it down. The names already in use had work to do; replacing them with a single word would leave the haulers with less information.

He went out with the stone on Ward, following Tarin across the silver water toward the islands. Near the first turn, the guide rose onto a ledge and waited for the loaded whale to clear the shallows.

”What do you call that stretch?” Ren asked, indicating the water behind them.

”Where it turns silver.”

”And if you mean the whole world?”

Tarin considered the question while Ward came alongside.

”That won’t tell a family which landing to use. They still need the shore and the route.”

”I’m keeping those names.”

”Then give them the world’s name as well. When a guide gives a destination, it can still say the rest.”

Ren nodded. Tarin returned to its Lawfire and moved ahead through the next channel.

At the Nightfire’s Hearth, the first stones of the screen stood beneath the overhang. Workers waited beside the open section as Ward approached with the load. The speaker came down to meet them, looking from the stone to the space where it would be fitted.

Ren asked about the name while the haulers prepared to unload.

”Our Hearth keeps its name,” the speaker said. ”So does our home, whatever the world is called.”

”Yes.”

The speaker held his gaze briefly, then turned to direct the first block onto the shelf.

Ren waited while the haulers adjusted their grip. Beneath the new course, the opening to the water remained clear for the Lawfires. The speaker indicated where the stone belonged, and one of the workers moved aside to give the pair room.

At Tide, the elder listened beside the great blue flame while people passed along the platforms behind them. Ren stepped aside for a family carrying bundles toward the landing, then finished explaining the record.

”Tide will still be Tide,” the elder said. ”The world’s name is yours to give. I would rather you didn’t use one Hearth’s name for all of it.”

”Because of the other Hearths?”

”They may think that one spoke for them. I can tell you what I want. The households here may have other answers.”

”The Nightfire speaker wanted its own name left alone.”

”Then you have that answer too.”

A tender passed with a bowl, and the elder moved closer to the flame to let it through. Below the platform, the young fires gathered in their sheltered water. Ren watched the tender crouch to reach them before returning to the question he had brought.

Ren looked across the ring toward the waiting Lawfires.

”What did you call the sea before I came?”

”The sea. We named the Hearths when we needed to say where we meant.”

A Bloom keeper waiting near the landing had heard the exchange. It approached as Ren came down from the elder’s platform.

”The young at our Hearth will grow up here,” it said. ”They’ll know these roads better than the ones we used before.”

Ren stopped beside it.

”A name for where they live would be useful,” the keeper continued. ”Even when they leave their own Hearth.”

”I’ll send word when I’ve chosen.”

The keeper nodded and went back to those waiting at the landing. Ren stayed a little longer, listening as people called across the platforms. They named Hearths, bridges and shores, giving one another enough detail to find the place they meant.

Back on the silver shore, Ren watched the pod beyond the familiar islands. A dark back rose, followed by another farther out, before both slipped beneath the surface.

The drowned city lay in that sea too, preserved through the first merge. He remembered its lamps coming on as the streets and towers settled into his world. The Hearths were only some of the places the new name would have to include.

He left the water and went up toward the Worldroot.

Vesper and Eira were near the path above the pocket. Eira had her folded drawings with her; Vesper was carrying a coil of strap back toward the cove.

”I’ve spoken to the keepers,” Ren told them. ”And the people moving the stone. Most want to be sure their own places keep their names.”

”The guides will still need those,” Vesper said. ”Tell them what you choose before they start getting messages with it on.”

”I’ll send word through Tarin.”

Eira adjusted the sheets in her hand. ”Write it out for us too. If someone asks me, I want to give them the same name you’ve put on the record.”

”I will.”

He let them finish their work while he sat beneath the tree.

The Boundless Worldroot already had its name. So did the Hearths, and the residents had ways of describing the newer routes between them. What he needed now was a name he could use for the world that contained them all.

”Choose something people can use when they’re talking, Ren,” Kaia said privately. ”I’d like that.”

He rested against the bark, considering what he’d heard. The name would appear on a register, but he would also be saying it to people who lived here. He wanted to be comfortable using it himself, without needing to explain the whole history whenever someone asked where they were.

By the time he rose, he had made his choice.

Ren caught Vesper and Eira where the path widened.

”I’ve chosen,” he said. ”⟨NAME⟩.”

Vesper repeated it once, then shifted the strap higher on her shoulder and continued toward the cove.

Ren wrote it down for Eira before filling the first line of his own record. She checked the spelling and folded the slip with her papers.

He gave Tarin the name and asked the guides to carry it to the Hearths. Word for the northern shore went with the next supply run. He had started the telling, though the farther settlements would hear it later.

Before leaving for campus, he sent the name to Iris and Lyra as well.

Halvern took the completed sheet at his garden table.

”Please forward it through the register,” Ren said. ”Once it’s processed, direct both institutions to the public record.”

Halvern read the three entries and placed the sheet in his document box.

”The confirmation will go to the contact you’ve listed.”

Ren nodded. He kept his copy with the restricted-region application and left the papers ready while the registration was processed.

When the confirmation reached him, it carried the register’s header and the name exactly as he had submitted it. He checked the entry against his copy, then addressed the System silently.

’The public name is ⟨NAME⟩.’

[PUBLIC DESIGNATION: ⟨NAME⟩.]

He took the confirmed record and the application to the access counter. The clerk checked the supporting papers, accepted the submission and returned an acknowledgement. The permit was now under review.

The survey request arrived through his declared contact after the registration confirmation.

It came from the Explorer Guild’s survey office. The letter cited Ward and Wake’s public Muster entries, each carrying a deployment weight of six, and expressed an interest in the aquatic habitat supporting them.

The office proposed sending surveyors with their instruments to examine the water and adjoining shore. It asked Ren to agree to the scope and arrange access before any visit. The proposal identified no particular part of his world; its stated basis was the two public entries.

Ren read through the request, then placed it beside the acknowledgement of his own application. He had not answered it yet.
