Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

A freight yard — the transfer point.

The last crate in the survey lot came off the Guild carrier’s flatbed on a hand-lift. Its straps were tight, its seals intact, and a manifest sleeve was fixed to one end.

The lift caught at a joint in the paving. The handler steadied the crate and pulled the wheels clear while the yard clerk checked the sleeve against her list.

”Four one one eight. Survey consignment.”

”Four one one eight,” he repeated, pressing his plate to the reader.

The clerk checked the acceptance, then indicated the wagon waiting across the yard. The Guild carrier’s contracted leg ended here; the next carrier was listed on the manifest for delivery to the survey depot.

At the wagon, two crew members lowered a ramp and guided the lift aboard. One braced the crate while the other passed a securing strap through the floor ring. A loose paper tag hung from a corner strap beside the manifest sleeve.

The wagon’s lead crew member brought his plate to the counter. The clerk entered the handoff time and both carriers, then turned the ledger for the receipt to be marked.

”That’s the survey lot complete,” she said.

He checked the references before signing and went back to the wagon. The crew raised the ramp and pinned the tailgate shut while the clerk called for the next consignment.

Mei Lanhua — Unknown Location.

The cart arrived during the lighter guard’s shift.

Mei heard the wheel catch at the uneven patch in the passage, followed by the familiar jolt. She sat up on the bed. Until now, she had heard that sound only during the heavier guard’s meals.

This time the wheels stopped near her door.

Something scraped beyond the wall beside the bed. Two voices exchanged a few words she couldn’t distinguish, then the scraping resumed. It sounded as though a load was being dragged across the floor. She had never seen the room on that side of the wall, but the cart remained outside while they worked.

Mei left the bed and knelt beside her door.

The hatch opened. A tray slid through with the bowl on it, and she raised her hands as she had at the earlier meals.

Beyond the guard’s hip, a crate stood on the cart beside the wall. Its lower label carried four marks, the last a tilted hook. Higher up, a paper tag hung from a strap. The string had let it fall against the wall close to the hatch’s edge.

Mei eased the bowl toward herself. The tag’s lettering was turned too far away to read, but its loose lower edge was within reach beside the tray.

A voice called along the passage. The guard turned his head, keeping one hand beneath the tray.

She drew the bowl inside with her left hand and reached beside it with her right. Her fingers caught the tag’s edge. She folded it back on itself with the printed face inward, pinching the crease flat between her thumb and forefinger.

The paper stayed folded when she released it.

Mei withdrew her hand and brought it beneath the bowl. The guard pulled the empty tray out and shut the hatch. Wheels began moving again, followed by the heavier door farther along the passage.

She listened to the guard’s steps retreat. Only when she could no longer hear them did she lower the bowl and look at her fingers.

The Furnace Road — the fifth stamp.

The canyon ended at a wall.

Kaelen saw the road run into it when the heat eased and the glow dimmed. He continued through the gap, checking the bare stretches ahead for somewhere to shelter when the walls brightened again.

A booth stood in the rock at the road’s end, with a single slot in its face. Beside it, a seam rose from the ground, crossed above his head and descended on the other side. The stone within that outline remained flush with the wall.

Kaelen stopped at the booth and took out his writ. Four stamps marked its corner. He straightened the paper before feeding it into the slot.

It returned with a fifth stamp. Below it, a line had been burned into the space that had been blank.

Present the stamped writ during a furnace surge.

He read the instruction, then looked from the slot to the seam. Neither moved.

At the previous booth, the heat had reached him while he waited for the writ to return. He had stood through it with his face covered and the damaged arm turned away. Here he would have to bring the paper to the exposed slot while the surge was already passing.

He flexed his fingers, then checked the wrapping at his left wrist. He could feel the hard patch in the burn through the cloth. He drew the sleeve back over the binding.

The walls began to brighten.

Kaelen moved away from the booth to a shallow recess beside the seam. He sat with his back against the rock, folded the writ with the new instruction inward and tucked it inside his coat.

As the heat swept down the canyon, he raised the wrapping over his face. His count continued through the pressure against the exposed stone. He kept the kit drawn close and his boots inside the recess until the walls dimmed.

The seam remained closed.

He opened the kit and checked the grey vial’s stopper. It was still half full. Eira’s instruction remained inside the lid, and he left the vial in its place before closing the bag.

From where he sat, he could see the slot and the stretch he would have to cross to reach it.

Quiet Office — a custody desk.

The clerk took the papers for consignment 4118 from the receiving tray and laid them beside the ledger.

The receiving note recorded the crate’s seals as intact. Beneath that was a handling observation: one paper tag folded inward on arrival. The clerk copied the observation, then drew out the authorized destination sheet.

It named the region’s Guild survey depot.

The clerk set a blank custody form beside it and entered the same reference number. The contents line followed the manifest. Before completing the destination, they opened the accompanying route sheet and traced past the depot to the end of the surveyed road.

An unloading site was marked farther beyond it.

As the clerk reached across the desk, a sleeve drew back from the wrist. A small serpent was inked on the skin inside it.

They copied the farther site’s designation into the destination field. The authorized sheet remained beside the form, still naming the depot, while they pressed the Quiet Office seal beside the changed entry.

The clerk placed the authorized copy beneath the receiving note and moved the completed form toward the filing tray. Before filing it, they consulted a public world-register extract and added a name to the separate administrative field below the cargo details.

They filed the form, drew their sleeve down and reached for the next reference.
