Sima Yi shook his head gently, his expression calm and composed. ”Your concern is understandable, Wife, but you need not worry. Lord Lie Fan is not one to act impulsively. In all the time I have served him, I have never seen him make a hasty decision. He is a man who weighs every option carefully and listens to the counsel of his advisors. This move, while bold, has been discussed at length within the inner council, and we have all reached an agreement that this is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for his ascension.”

He paused, his gaze steady as he continued. ”The situation is different from that of Yuan Shu, the fool who declared himself Emperor in the past. Yuan Shu’s failure was not due to the act itself but rather his inability to contain his greed and arrogance. He lacked the foresight and strategic acumen to consolidate his power and win the support of the people. Lord Lie Fan, on the other hand, has taken great care to ensure that his rise to power is both justified and supported by those around him.”

Wannian listened intently, her initial concern giving way to a more thoughtful expression. ”But what about the other warlords?” she asked. ”Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and the remaining others, won’t they see this as a threat and unite against him?”

Sima Yi’s lips curved into a faint smile, a glimmer of confidence in his eyes. ”That is a possibility, but it is one we have anticipated. Lord Lie Fan’s control over half of the realm, coupled with the allegiance of the Sun Clan, gives him a significant advantage. Moreover, his reputation as a just and capable leader has won him the loyalty of many. The people see him as a unifying force, someone who can bring an end to the chaos and suffering that has plagued the land for so long.”

He leaned slightly closer, his voice lowering as if to emphasize the gravity of his words. ”The declaration of his ascension will not be made lightly. It will be accompanied by a carefully crafted narrative that positions him as the rightful heir to the Han dynasty’s legacy to create a new Dynasty. By framing his rise as a restoration of order and stability, he will garner the support of scholars, officials, and commoners alike. This is not merely a power grab, it is a calculated move to secure the future of the land.”

Wannian’s brow furrowed as she processed his explanation. She trusted Sima Yi’s judgment implicitly, but the thought of her brother taking such a monumental step still filled her with a sense of unease. ”And what of the Han Emperor?” she asked quietly. ”What will become of him?”

Sima Yi’s expression grew somber at the mention of the Han Emperor. ”The Han dynasty’s decline is an unfortunate reality,” he said. ”The Emperor is little more than a figurehead, a puppet controlled by Cao Cao. His reign has been marked by corruption and incompetence, and the people have lost faith in the Han’s ability to govern. Lord Lie Fan’s ascension will not be an act of rebellion but rather a necessary step to restore order and prosperity to the land.”

He reached out to gently cup Wannian’s cheek, his touch reassuring. ”I understand your concerns, Wife, but you must trust in your brother’s vision. He is not acting out of ambition alone but out of a genuine desire to create a better future for the people. And as his sister, your support and understanding will mean a great deal to him.”

Wannian sighed softly, her gaze dropping to her hands as she considered his words. She knew that her brother was a man of great ambition and vision, but the thought of him declaring himself Emperor still felt overwhelming. Yet, as she looked up at Sima Yi, she saw the confidence and conviction in his eyes, and it gave her a sense of reassurance.

”I will trust in my brother’s judgment,” she said finally, her voice steady. ”And in yours, Husband. If you believe this is the right course of action, then I will support it. But I cannot help but worry for his safety and the future of our family.”

Sima Yi nodded, his expression softening. ”Your concern is a testament to your love and loyalty, Wannian. But rest assured, we have taken every precaution to ensure that this move is successful. Lord Lie Fan’s rise to power will be a turning point in the history of the land, and we will be there to support him every step of the way.”

As the conversation came to an end, Wannian felt a sense of resolve settle over her. She knew that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges, but she also knew that her brother and her husband were men of great intelligence and foresight.

If anyone could navigate the complexities of the political landscape and emerge victorious, it was her brother Lie Fan and her husband Sima Yi.

For now, she would focus on her role as the future matriarch of the Sima Clan, supporting her husband and upholding the legacy of her new family. But in the back of her mind, she would always carry a quiet hope for her brother’s success and the realization of his vision for a unified and prosperous land.

As the night deepened, Wannian and Sima Yi sat together in quiet companionship, their bond strengthened by the shared understanding of the challenges that lay ahead.

The flickering light of the lantern cast a warm glow over the room, a symbol of the hope and determination that burned within their hearts. The game of power and ambition was far from over, but they were ready to face it together, united in their purpose and their love for one another.

Meanwhile, under the veil of night, the outer towns of Xiapi lay cloaked in shadows, their streets quiet and still. The bustling activity of the day had given way to an eerie calm, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind or the distant hoot of an owl.

Yet, within this stillness, danger lurked. A group of hired robbers, their faces obscured by dark cloth and their movements swift and deliberate, moved through the narrow alleys and backstreets.

These men were not ordinary thieves, they were agents of the Goguryeo Merchants, sent on a covert mission to uncover the secrets of an item that had become the subject of whispered rumors and intense intrigue, gunpowder.

The Goguryeo Merchants, operating under the secret edict of King Sansang, had received the task of uncovering the mysteries of this powerful substance.

Gunpowder, a creation that had already begun to change the face of Lie Fan’s domain through fireworks and soon other things, was a closely guarded secret within Lie Fan’s domain.

Its potential was immense, and King Sansang was determined to acquire the knowledge of its creation, no matter the cost. The merchants, driven by the promise of immense rewards and the favor of their king, had spared no expense in their efforts to infiltrate Xiapi and gather information.

However, what the Goguryeo Merchants did not know was that their every move was being watched. The Oriole Agents, Lie Fan’s elite network of spies and informants, had been monitoring their activities for weeks.

From the moment the merchants had set foot in Xiapi, their actions had been meticulously tracked, their conversations overheard, and their plans uncovered. The Oriole Agents operated with precision and discretion, ensuring that the merchants remained unaware of the invisible web tightening around them.

As the hired robbers made their way toward their targets, warehouses, workshops, and other locations rumored to house the secrets of gunpowder, they were unaware that they were walking into a carefully laid trap.

The Oriole Agents had anticipated their movements and had taken measures to ensure that the robbers would not succeed. Hidden in the shadows, the agents waited, their presence undetected but their resolve unwavering.

In the heart of Xiapi, within the fortified walls of the Governor’s Castle, Lie Fan sat in his private study, his expression calm but focused. Before him lay a series of reports from the Oriole Agents, detailing the latest movements of the Goguryeo Merchants and their hired robbers.

The flickering light of a single lantern cast a warm glow over the room, illuminating the maps and documents spread across the table.

Several of Lie Fan’s inner council advisors, Sima Yi, Zhuge Liang, and Jia Xu, stood around the table, their expressions serious as they discussed the situation. ”The Goguryeo Merchants are persistent,” Jia Xu remarked, his voice low and measured. ”They have tried multiple times to infiltrate our facilities, but thanks to the Oriole Agents, their efforts have been thwarted. However, we cannot afford to become complacent. If they manage to uncover the secrets of gunpowder, it could have dire consequences for our domain and technological advancement, my lord.”

Zhuge Liang nodded in agreement, his fan resting lightly against his chin. ”The potential of gunpowder is immense, and its misuse could lead to catastrophic outcomes. We must ensure that its secrets remain within our control. The Oriole Agents have done well to monitor the merchants, but we must also consider more proactive measures to deter future attempts.”

Sima Yi, looking at this from a pragmatic point of view, added, ”We should also consider the possibility of misinformation. By feeding the merchants false leads and misleading information, we can divert their attention and resources away from the true secrets of gunpowder. This will not only protect our knowledge but also waste their time and effort.”

Lie Fan listened intently, his fingers steepled in front of him as he considered his advisors’ suggestions. After a moment of silence, he spoke. ”Your counsel is sound. We will continue to monitor the Goguryeo Merchants through the Oriole Agents, but we will also implement measures to mislead and deter them. Zhongda, I task you with overseeing the dissemination of false information. Ensure that the merchants are led astray without realizing it.”

Sima Yi bowed slightly. ”It will be done, my lord.”

Lie Fan then turned to Zhuge Liang. ”Kongming, I want you to work with the Oriole Agents to strengthen our defenses around the facilities that house the secrets of gunpowder. We cannot afford any breaches.”

Zhuge Liang nodded, his expression resolute. ”Understood, my lord. I will ensure that our defenses are impenetrable.”

Jia Xu, after that, added, ”We should also consider the broader implications of this situation. The Goguryeo Merchants are acting on the orders of King Sansang, which suggests that Goguryeo itself is interested in acquiring gunpowder. And this could have significant consequences, since it means they were trying to break free from the tribute agreement we have imposed on them. We must be prepared for the possibility of further movement from Goguryeo.”
