With that, the two warriors walked off the training grounds, their steps firm and purposeful. The duel had been a test, but it was only the beginning. The true battle, for power, for survival, for the future, was yet to come. And Ma Chao knew that, with Lie Fan by his side, he and the Ma Clan had a fighting chance.

As Lie Fan and Ma Chao, their bodies still radiating the heat of their intense duel, walked off the training grounds, the echoes of the crowd’s cheers ringing in their ears.

They carefully placed their weapons back on the racks, the halberd and spear now silent witnesses to the clash of skill and will. Before they could fully catch their breath, they were greeted by the familiar faces of Zhao Yun, Zhang Liao, and Wen Pin, who had observed the entire spectacle from the sidelines.

”Lord Lie Fan,” Zhao Yun began, his voice filled with admiration, ”your mastery of the halberd is truly unmatched. I have never witnessed such precision and power.”

Zhang Liao nodded in agreement. ”Indeed, my lord. Your skill is an inspiration to us all.” Wen Pin added his praise, noting the strategic brilliance Lie Fan displayed throughout the duel.

Lie Fan acknowledged their compliments with a modest smile. ”Thank you, gentlemen. But Young Lord Ma Chao is a worthy opponent. His skill and resilience are commendable.”

He then turned to Ma Chao, extending a hand. ”You fought bravely, Young Lord Ma Chao. Your reputation precedes you, and you have proven it to be well deserved.”

Ma Chao, still slightly winded but his spirit undimmed, clasped Lie Fan’s hand. ”The honor was mine, Lord Lie Fan. Your skill is truly exceptional. I have much to learn from you.”

With the formalities concluded, Lie Fan, accompanied by his advisors Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi, and Lu Xun, led Ma Chao and his entourage toward the grand hall of Xiapi’s Governor Castle.

The atmosphere within the hall was markedly different from the charged energy of the training grounds. Here, cool calculation and political maneuvering replaced the clash of steel.

Once seated, with attendants pouring tea and offering refreshments, Lie Fan and Ma Chao began the delicate dance of negotiation. Ma Chao, his purpose clear, outlined the precarious situation of the Ma Clan.

They were caught in Cao Cao’s mistreatment and tyranny that harmed the Ma Clan after pledging their allegiance to him, and now they desire their autonomy as an independent force once again.

Their lands had been diminished at a large scale by Cao Cao, their power was waning with the low supplies and under average equipment quality provided by Cao Cao, and they desperately needed a powerful ally to break free from Cao Cao’s grasp and re establish their independence.

Lie Fan listened attentively, his expression carefully neutral, betraying nothing of his inner thoughts. He acknowledged the Ma Clan’s plight, nodding slowly as Ma Chao spoke. ”Young Lord Ma Chao,” he said, his voice measured, ”your concerns are understandable. Cao Cao’s tyranny knows no bounds, and many have suffered under his rule.”

He paused, allowing his words to hang in the air before continuing. ”However, alliances are not forged on sympathy alone. What benefits can you offer in return for my support? Why should I risk the ire and attention of Cao Cao by sheltering and supporting your clan?”

This was the crux of the matter. Ma Chao, with the assistance of his two trusted subordinates, Hu Bao and Lan Fu, had anticipated this question. They had spent countless hours strategizing, trying to determine what they could offer Lie Fan that would be enticing enough to secure his support, yet not so detrimental that it would cripple the Ma Clan further.

Hu Bao, at this time, spoke first. ”Lord Lie Fan, our lands, though diminished, are still fertile and productive. We can offer you a share of our harvests, ensuring a steady supply of resources especially horses for your growing army.”

Lan Fu, with his shrewd mind, added, ”Furthermore, our knowledge of the western territories is invaluable. We have contacts and influence in regions that are still beyond your reach. This information could be crucial in your future campaigns.”

Ma Chao himself emphasized the strategic value of their alliance. ”By supporting us, you create a thorn in Cao Cao’s side. He will be forced to divert his attention and resources westward, weakening his efforts elsewhere. This could be a significant advantage for you, especially if you have plans to expand your own territory.”

Lie Fan listened to their offers, his mind working swiftly. He weighed the potential benefits he could receive at this time. The resources and information were useful, but not game changing, especially information as he has the Oriole Agents who provide much better information for him.

The real value lay in the strategic distraction the Ma Clan could provide. Cao Cao’s southern campaign plan against Liu Zhang in Yi Province was a significant threat, and anything that could delay or disrupt those plans was worth considering.

However, Lie Fan had no genuine intention of helping the Ma Clan achieve true independence. He saw them as a useful tool, a pawn in his larger game. He knew that Cao Cao would not tolerate a truly independent Ma Clan once again on his western border.

He intended to use the alliance to make the Ma Clan indebted to him, to cultivate the favor they would owe to him, and to use it as leverage in the future to gain their loyalty.

He masked his true intentions with a show of thoughtful consideration. ”Your offers are...intriguing,” he said slowly. ”But I require more time to consider the implications of such an alliance. This is not a decision to be made lightly.”

Ma Chao and his subordinates, Hu Bao and Lan Fu, exchanged uneasy glances as Lie Fan’s words hung in the air. The tension in the grand hall was palpable, thick enough to cut with a blade. Ma Chao’s heart pounded in his chest, his mind racing with the implications of Lie Fan’s hesitation.

Had they not done enough? Had their offers fallen short? The thought of returning to Wuwei empty handed, with no ally to shield them from Cao Cao’s tightening grip, was a prospect too grim to bear.

Hu Bao’s hands clenched into fists beneath the table, while Lan Fu’s usually calm demeanor betrayed a flicker of anxiety. They were desperate, and Lie Fan knew it.

Lie Fan, on the other hand, observed their unease with a practiced and subtle eye. He leaned back in his ornate chair, his expression thoughtful but unreadable.

The silence stretched on, each passing second amplifying the tension in the room. Then, with a barely perceptible nod, he signaled his advisors, Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi, and Lu Xun, to begin their carefully orchestrated performance.

Zhuge Liang was the first to speak, his voice calm and measured, yet carrying the weight of authority. ”My lord,” he began, folding his fan and tapping it lightly against his palm, ”while I understand your caution, I believe there is merit in considering Young Lord Ma Chao’s proposal. The Ma Clan’s resources, though diminished, could prove valuable in the long term. Their knowledge of the western territories is unparalleled, and their influence in those regions could open new opportunities for us.”

Sima Yi chimed in next. His tone was cool and calculating, his words laced with strategic insight. ”Furthermore, my lord, the Ma Clan’s rebellion against Cao Cao would serve as a significant distraction. Cao Cao’s forces were already stretched thin, and a rebellion in the west would force him to divert resources and attention away from whatever campaign plan he had. This could buy us valuable time to consolidate our own position.”

Lu Xun, the youngest of the three but no less astute, added his voice to the chorus. ”Lord Lie Fan, the Ma Clan’s cooperation, once secured, could also serve as a powerful symbol. By aligning with them, we demonstrate to other factions that we are a force willing to stand against Cao Cao’s tyranny in using the Han Emperor. This could attract more allies to our cause, further strengthening our position.”

The three advisors spoke with conviction, their words carefully crafted to sway Lie Fan’s decision. To Ma Chao and his subordinates, it seemed as though they were genuinely advocating on their behalf, their arguments thoughtful and persuasive.

The gratitude that swelled in Ma Chao’s chest was genuine. He had not expected such support from Lie Fan’s inner circle, and it only deepened his respect for the man who commanded such loyalty from his advisors.

Lie Fan acted as he listened to his advisors with a thoughtful expression, his fingers steepled in front of him. He allowed the silence to linger for a moment longer, letting the weight of their words sink in.

Then, with a slow nod, he turned to Ma Chao. ”My advisors make compelling arguments,” he said, his tone measured. ”It seems there is more to this alliance than I initially considered.”

Ma Chao’s heart leaped, but he forced himself to remain composed. ”Lord Lie Fan,” he said, his voice steady despite the hope bubbling within him, ”I assure you, the Ma Clan will not disappoint you. We are prepared to prove our worth, not just in words but in action.”

Lie Fan’s lips curved into a faint smile, though his eyes remained inscrutable. ”Very well Young Lord Ma Chao,” he said at last. He leaned forward slightly, his expression one of measured benevolence, ”I understand that your clan seeks independence, I respect that desire. I am willing to consider an alliance with the Ma Clan. However, there are conditions that must be met.”

”First,” Lie Fan continued, ”I ask for a modest share of your resources, grain, horses, and other supplies, the one you promised previously and more to support my own efforts. This will not be so burdensome as to cripple your clan, but enough to demonstrate your commitment to this alliance.”

Ma Chao nodded slowly, relieved that the demand was not excessive. ”That is reasonable,” he said. ”We can provide a portion of our harvests and a steady supply of horses. Our lands, though diminished, are still fertile, and our herds are strong.”

Lie Fan acknowledged this with a nod before continuing. ”Second, I request that you keep me informed of your activities and movements. This is not to control you, but to ensure that our efforts are coordinated and that we do not inadvertently undermine each other. Communication will be key to our success.”

Again, Ma Chao found the condition fair. ”We will provide regular updates,” he assured Lie Fan. ”Transparency is essential in any alliance.”

”Finally,” Lie Fan said, his tone softening slightly, ”I ask that you consider my counsel in matters of strategy. I have no intention of dictating your actions, but I believe that my advisors and I can offer valuable insights that may aid your cause.”

This last condition was perhaps the most subtle of all. By positioning himself as a mentor and advisor, Lie Fan was planting the seeds of influence. Ma Chao, eager to secure the alliance, saw no harm in accepting. ”Your wisdom is renowned, Lord Lie Fan,” he said. ”We would be honored to receive your guidance.”

With the terms agreed upon, Ma Chao felt a wave of relief wash over him. The conditions were far lighter than he had feared, and Lie Fan’s demeanor was one of generosity and understanding. He rose from his seat and bowed deeply. ”Thank you, Lord Lie Fan. Your kindness and understanding will not be forgotten. The Ma Clan will repay this favor tenfold once we regain our independence.”
