With the terms agreed upon, Ma Chao felt a wave of relief wash over him. The conditions were far lighter than he had feared, and Lie Fan’s demeanor was one of generosity and understanding. He rose from his seat and bowed deeply. ”Thank you, Lord Lie Fan. Your kindness and understanding will not be forgotten. The Ma Clan will repay this favor tenfold once we regain our independence.”

Lie Fan smiled, a warm but calculated expression. ”I look forward to that day, Young Lord Ma Chao. May our alliance bring prosperity to us both.”

As Ma Chao and his subordinates took their leave, their spirits were high. They had secured the support of one of the most powerful warlords in the land, and the future of the Ma Clan seemed brighter than it had in years.

Hu Bao and Lan Fu exchanged satisfied glances, their earlier anxiety replaced by a sense of accomplishment. Ma Chao, though still mindful of the challenges ahead, felt a renewed sense of hope. With Lie Fan’s backing, he believed they could finally break free from Cao Cao’s grip.

Once the doors of the grand hall closed behind Ma Chao and his entourage, the atmosphere shifted. The warm, accommodating demeanor Lie Fan had displayed moments ago melted away, replaced by a cold, calculating expression.

He turned to his advisors, Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi, and Lu Xun, who had remained silent during the final negotiations.

”Well?” Lie Fan asked, his voice low and measured. ”What are your thoughts?”

Zhuge Liang was the first to respond, his fan flicking open with a practiced motion. ”My lord, your performance was masterful. Ma Chao and his subordinates left here believing they had secured a generous and equitable alliance. They are now firmly in your debt, both materially and emotionally.”

Sima Yi showed a smile as he nodded in agreement. ”The conditions you set were perfect, light enough to avoid suspicion, but significant enough to establish a foundation of control. By positioning yourself as a benefactor rather than a dictator, you have ensured their trust, at least for the time being.”

Lu Xun, the youngest but no less astute, added his own assessment. ”Ma Chao’s gratitude is genuine, but it is also a vulnerability. He will be eager to prove his worth, which makes him easier to manipulate. When the time comes, he will look to you for guidance my lord, and that is when we can truly shape his actions to our advantage.”

Lie Fan listened to their analysis with a faint smile. ”Precisely,” he said. ”Ma Chao is a proud man, and pride can be both a strength and a weakness. For now, we let him believe that he is in control. We offer support, advice, and resources, but always with the understanding that he owes us a debt. When his rebellion against Cao Cao inevitably falters, he will have no choice but to turn to us for salvation. And that is when we will secure his trust into loyalty, not as an ally, but as a subordinate.”

Zhuge Liang’s eyes gleamed with approval. ”A masterstroke, my lord. By appearing magnanimous now, you lay the groundwork for future control. Ma Chao will not see the chains until they are already around him.”

Sima Yi’s smirk was subtle but unmistakable. ”And when Cao Cao is forced to divert his attention to deal with the Ma Clan’s rebellion, we will have the perfect opportunity to advance our own plans. The distraction they provide will be invaluable.”

Lu Xun folded his arms, his expression thoughtful. ”The key now is to maintain the illusion. We must continue to play the role of benevolent allies, offering support and guidance without revealing our true intentions. Ma Chao must never suspect that we see him as anything more than a pawn.”

Lie Fan nodded, his gaze distant as he considered the path ahead. ”This alliance is but the first move in a much larger game. Cao Cao is a formidable opponent, but he is not infallible. By weakening his grip on the West and sowing discord within his ranks, we create opportunities that we can exploit.”

He turned to his advisors, his expression hardening. ”But remember, this must remain a secret. No one outside this room can know our true intentions. Ma Chao must believe in the sincerity of our alliance, and Cao Cao must remain blind to our machinations. The success of our plans depends on it.”

The three advisors bowed their heads in unison, their loyalty to Lie Fan unwavering. ”Understood, my lord,” they said in unison.

As the meeting concluded, Lie Fan leaned back in his chair, his mind already racing with the possibilities. The alliance with the Ma Clan was a calculated risk, but one with immense potential.

By positioning himself as their savior, he had gained a powerful tool to use against Cao Cao. And when the time came, he would not hesitate to wield it.

For now, though, the charade would continue. Ma Chao would return to Wuwei, his spirits lifted by the promise of support. He would rally his clan, gather his forces, and prepare for the rebellion that would shake the foundations of Cao Cao’s domain. And all the while, Lie Fan would watch and wait, biding his time until the moment was right to strike.

On the other hand, in the far southwest, nestled within the heart of Yi Province, the city of Chengdu stood as a bastion of relative stability amidst the chaos of the crumbling Han dynasty.

Liu Zhang, the governor of Yi Province, sat in the grand hall of his Governor’s Castle, his demeanor a mixture of meekness and quiet confidence. Though he was not a man of great ambition or martial prowess, he took solace in the fact that he was surrounded by advisors he believed to be both loyal and exceptionally talented, Fa Zheng, Zhang Song, and Meng Da.

What Liu Zhang did not know, however, was that these very advisors had long been in secret contact with Lie Fan, their true allegiance lying not with him, but with the rising warlord who sought to unify the land under his own vision.

The grand hall of Chengdu’s Governor Castle was a place of understated elegance, its walls adorned with intricate carvings and its floors polished to a mirror sheen. Liu Zhang sat upon his ornate chair, his hands resting lightly on the armrests as he listened to the reports of his advisors.

Fa Zheng, known for his sharp mind, stood to his right, his expression calm but calculating. Zhang Song, known for his wit and eloquence, stood to his left, while Meng Da, a capable scholar with a reputation for pragmatism, stood slightly behind them. Together, they formed the core of Liu Zhang’s inner circle, and he trusted them implicitly.

It was on this day that the tranquility of Chengdu was interrupted by the sudden arrival of an envoy from Cao Cao, the powerful man who controlled much to his north as Zhang Lu had sought shelter pledging his allegiance to Cao Cao.

The envoy, a man of sharp features and a commanding presence, entered the grand hall with a small entourage, their arrival announced by the clatter of boots against the polished floor. Liu Zhang, though surprised by the unexpected visit, maintained his composure, his curiosity piqued by the purpose of their mission.

”Governor Liu Zhang,” the envoy began, bowing deeply as a sign of respect, ”I come on behalf of my lord, Cao Cao, who sends his greetings and wishes to extend an offer of friendship and cooperation.”

Liu Zhang raised an eyebrow, his interest clearly piqued. ”An offer of friendship and cooperation?” he repeated, his voice tinged with both curiosity and caution. ”Please, elaborate.”

The envoy straightened, his expression earnest. ”My lord recognizes the strategic importance of Yi Province and the stability you have maintained here. He wishes to offer you supply and logistical assistance to strengthen your defenses against outside threats. In addition, he proposes an alliance, one that would ensure mutual protection and prosperity.”

Liu Zhang leaned back in his chair, his mind racing as he processed the envoy’s words. Cao Cao’s reputation as a cunning and ambitious warlord was well known, and the idea of an alliance with him was both tempting and fraught with risk.

On one hand, the offer of supplies and logistical support was undeniably appealing, especially in these uncertain times. On the other hand, Liu Zhang could not shake the feeling that there was more to this proposal than met the eye.

He turned to his advisors, seeking their counsel. ”What are your thoughts on this matter?” he asked, his voice steady but tinged with uncertainty.

Fa Zheng was the first to respond, his tone measured and thoughtful. ”My lord, while Cao Cao’s offer is indeed generous, we must consider the implications of such an alliance. Cao Cao is a man of great ambition, and his intentions may not be as benevolent as they appear.”

Zhang Song nodded in agreement, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly. ”Fa Zheng speaks wisely, my lord. Cao Cao’s reputation precedes him, and we must tread carefully. However, it would be unwise to dismiss his offer outright. Perhaps we can use this opportunity to our advantage.”

Meng Da added his own pragmatic perspective view. ”Cao Cao’s support could prove invaluable in strengthening our defenses, my lord. If we accept his offer, we must ensure that we retain control over our own affairs and do not become overly reliant on him.”

Liu Zhang listened intently, his advisors’ words echoing in his mind. He trusted their judgment, but the decision ultimately rested with him. After a moment of contemplation, he turned back to the envoy. ”Your lord’s offer is generous, and I am grateful for his consideration. However, such a decision cannot be made lightly. I will need time to discuss this matter further with my advisors.”

The envoy bowed again, his expression unreadable. ”Of course, Governor. My lord understands the gravity of such a decision and does not expect an immediate response. I will await your answer.”

With that, the envoy and his entourage were escorted out of the grand hall, leaving Liu Zhang and his advisors to deliberate in private. Once the doors had closed behind them, Liu Zhang turned to his advisors, his expression a mixture of concern and determination.

”What do you truly think of Cao Cao’s offer?” he asked, his voice low but earnest.

Fa Zheng exchanged a glance with Zhang Song and Meng Da before responding. ”My lord, while Cao Cao’s offer appears generous, it is likely a ruse. His true intention is to gain your trust and lower your guard, all while preparing to launch a campaign against Yi Province. He seeks to weaken you from within before striking from without.”
