Zhuge Liang nodded, his fan pausing mid-sway. ”The marriage today was more than a familial union. It was a statement. Lord Lie Fan continues to strengthen his position by forging alliances not just through military might but through bonds of trust and loyalty. Xiapi and his domain are thriving under his leadership. The people are content, his advisors are respected, and his ambitions, though great, are tempered by a sense of responsibility.”

Pang Tong rubbed his chin, his expression thoughtful. ”You’re not wrong, Kongming. I’ve observed the same. Yet, aligning oneself with a leader is a commitment not to be taken lightly. Have you considered what our masters might say? They are not one to agree without great deliberation.”

Zhuge Liang’s eyes gleamed with determination. ”I have. And I believe our masters would see the wisdom in joining a cause that aligns with his values. Lord Lie Fan’s vision is one that can unify the land, not through tyranny, but through leadership that inspires loyalty. It is a rare thing.”

Lu Xun listened intently, his youthful enthusiasm now tempered by the gravity of the conversation. ”Brother Kongming, your analysis is profound. If I may ask, what will you do next? How do you plan to communicate this decision to your masters?”

Zhuge Liang resumed walking, his steps deliberate. ”I will write to them tonight. The time for hesitation is over. The role that I, Shiyuan, and Yuanzhi here has allowed us to see Lord Lie Fan’s potential firsthand, and I must convey that to our masters. It is not just about the present but about securing a future where wisdom and strategy guide the land.”

As they continued through the vibrant streets, the atmosphere around them shifted subtly. The lively market seemed to fade into the background, the four men lost in their thoughts. Each of them carried the weight of their own decisions, yet their bond and mutual respect created a shared sense of purpose.

Eventually, they stopped at a small tea stall, the aroma of freshly brewed tea wafting through the air. Zhuge Liang ordered a pot, his movements calm and deliberate. As they sat around the low table, the moonlight casting soft shadows on their faces, he looked at each of them in turn.

Zhuge Liang sat in silence, the faint aroma of tea lingering in the air as his companions finished their cups. His fan, which had been in perpetual motion throughout the conversation, rested on the table, its rhythmic sway now stilled by the weight of his thoughts.

The words he had just spoken to Pang Tong, Xu Shu, and Lu Xun rang true in his heart. He was certain that with their collective talents alongside Sima Yi and the steadfast leadership of Lie Fan, the dream of a unified and prosperous land could become reality.

Yet, it was a vision that required careful planning and unwavering commitment. The stakes were high, and Zhuge Liang knew that his next steps had to be executed with precision.

After some final words of camaraderie, the group rose from their seats and stepped back onto the lively streets of Xiapi. The festive atmosphere remained undisturbed, the laughter of children and the chatter of merchants providing a cheerful backdrop to their thoughts.

Lu Xun bid them farewell as they approached a fork in the road, heading back to his residence with a polite bow and a promise to continue their discussions another day.

Zhuge Liang, Pang Tong, and Xu Shu resumed their walk toward their assigned quarters. The path was quieter now, with fewer people lingering in the streets as the hour grew late. Lanterns cast flickering shadows along the cobblestone roads, their warm light reflecting the resolve etched on each man’s face.

Upon reaching the modest residence Lie Fan had arranged for them, the three men entered quietly, each retreating to their own thoughts. Zhuge Liang, however, did not rest.

Instead, he moved toward the small desk in his room, lit a lamp, and unfurled a blank scroll. The flickering light illuminated his calm but determined expression as he dipped his brush into the ink and began to write.

His words flowed with clarity and purpose, addressed to the three men who had shaped his intellect and nurtured his talents, Sima Hui, Pang Degong, and Huang Chengyan.

These were men he revered, whose wisdom and guidance had been his cornerstone during the time learning under him. Now, he sought to inform them of the conviction that had taken root in his heart.

”To my esteemed masters,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It is with the utmost respect and a heart full of gratitude that I write to you today. The time I have spent under your tutelage has prepared me for the journey I now embark upon, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

As you know, I have been in Xiapi for quite some time now, observing Lord Lie Fan and Xiapi. Alongside, Shiyuan and Yuanzhi, I have had the opportunity to observe his leadership closely. What I have witnessed is a rare blend of ambition and integrity.

Lord Lie Fan governs not with an iron fist, but with a heart that beats for the welfare of his people. He is a man who seeks to unify the land not through fear or tyranny, but through alliances forged in trust and mutual respect.

I know you have always cautioned against rushing into allegiances. You have taught me to weigh every decision carefully, to consider not just the immediate benefits but the long term consequences. It is with this in mind that I assure you, my recommendation comes after much reflection and analysis. Lord Lie Fan is a leader worthy of our support.

Shiyuan, Yuanzhi, and I are unanimous in our belief that his vision aligns with the values we hold dear. He seeks to create a land where wisdom and strategy guide decisions, where the people prosper, and where unity is achieved without sacrificing humanity.

I understand that moving to Xiapi may seem like a daunting decision. If you choose to remain in Longzhong, I wish to ease your concerns that Lord Lie Fan is a man of honor. He will not harm the village or its people, regardless of your decision. Moreover, he will definitely keep your location a secret, ensuring your safety and peace of mind. Such is his respect for the wisdom you possess. Of course to ensure that no one would ever receive your service as well.

However, I must implore you to consider relocating to Xiapi. Here, your knowledge could shine even brighter, influencing decisions that could shape the future of our land. Lord Lie Fan’s sincerity and dedication make him an ideal leader to serve, and I believe that together, we can achieve the harmony and stability we have long dreamed of.

Your devoted student,

Kongming, Zhuge Liang”

After that, Zhuge Liang set the brush down, his hand steady even after crafting such an important message. He carefully folded the letter and sealed it, intending to have it delivered at the earliest opportunity. His gaze lingered on the scroll for a moment longer, as though willing its message to reach the hearts of his masters.

In the adjacent rooms, Pang Tong and Xu Shu were also deep in thought. Pang Tong paced slowly, his characteristic nonchalance replaced by a rare seriousness. ”Kongming is right,” he murmured to himself. ”This is no ordinary leader. Lie Fan has the potential to change everything.”

Xu Shu, seated by a small window, gazed out at the moonlit courtyard. His thoughts mirrored those of his companions, a sense of cautious optimism filling him. The journey they had embarked on was fraught with uncertainty, but for the first time in years, he felt there’s someone who was worthy of their collective talents, not just a single individual but all of them.

The next morning, Zhuge Liang handed the sealed letter to a trusted courier, ensuring that it would be delivered safely to Longzhong. As the courier departed, he turned to Pang Tong and Xu Shu, his expression resolute.

”The seeds have been sown,” Zhuge Liang said. ”Now, we wait. But in the meantime, we must continue to observe and begin to show some support to Lord Lie Fan. His path is ours to walk, and we must ensure it leads to the unity and peace we all seek.”

Pang Tong grinned, his usual sly demeanor returning. ”Well, Kongming, if anyone can convince those three old sages, it’s you. Let’s hope they see what we see.”

Xu Shu nodded, his voice calm. ”They will. Wisdom recognizes wisdom, and your words carry the weight of truth.”

The courier’s journey was arduous, winding through rugged mountain paths and dense forests. Longzhong, nestled deep within the mountains of southern Jing Province, was a sanctuary of peace and intellect, far removed from the chaos of the warring states.

The courier, determined to fulfill his mission, pressed on despite the harsh terrain. It took nearly three weeks, but at last, he arrived at the quiet village, its serenity a stark contrast to the bustling cities of the north.

As he entered the village, the courier inquired with the locals about the residence of Sima Hui, the reclusive scholar known for his wisdom. The villagers, respectful of the stranger’s purpose, directed him to a modest yet well-kept house surrounded by bamboo groves. The courier, fatigued but resolute, approached the residence and knocked firmly on the wooden door.

Inside, Sima Hui was enjoying his usual routine, a quiet cup of tea accompanied by the soft rustle of leaves outside. The knock at the door interrupted his peaceful moment, and he rose with mild curiosity. Opening the door, he was greeted by the sight of the travel-worn courier, who presented the sealed letter with both hands.

Recognizing Zhuge Liang’s distinctive seal, Sima Hui’s eyes widened in surprise. ”Ah, a letter from Kongming,” he murmured, his voice tinged with anticipation. He thanked the courier with a warm smile, inviting him to rest and refresh himself while he sent word to his two close friends and fellow scholars, Pang Degong and Huang Chengyan.

Within the hour, the three revered scholars gathered in Sima Hui’s study. The room was filled with an air of quiet respect as the men seated themselves around a low table. The letter lay before them, its seal unbroken, carrying the weight of Zhuge Liang’s words across the distance.

Sima Hui broke the seal with care and began to read aloud, his voice steady yet tinged with emotion as he conveyed Zhuge Liang’s thoughts and observations. As the letter unfolded, detailing Lie Fan’s leadership, vision, and the potential he represented, the room grew increasingly silent.
