The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming

Chapter 267: Chapter 267: Repaying a Favor

”It’s late. I imagine things over there are chaotic.”

Ye Chutang instructed,

”Go prepare two plain-colored dresses. Someone might come tomorrow to report the death. The dead deserve respect, so give the order that no one is to make things difficult for them.”

The maidservant readily agreed.

”I understand, Second Miss. You have a benevolent heart.”

’Anyone else would refuse to have anything more to do with that family. Only Second Miss Ye would be willing to get involved with them at a time like this!’

Ye Chutang wiped Xiao Wu’s face with a warm cloth.

Xiao Wu blinked.

’So that’s why Big Sis said we had to get up early tomorrow. Did she foresee all of this?’

She didn’t ask any more questions and quickly ran to the bed to warm the blankets for Ye Chutang.

To her, Ye Mingze’s death wasn’t worth a second thought. Nothing could be allowed to disturb her big sis’s sleep!

Ye Chutang slept soundly through the night, holding the Little Milk Group. Early the next morning, she got up, changed her clothes, and then pulled Xiao Wu out of the warm blankets.

Xiao Wu rubbed her eyes and glanced outside.

’Huh? It looks like no one’s here.’

She looked up, puzzled.

’Since no one’s coming, we can enjoy the peace and quiet. Why is Big Sis still dressed like this?’

Ye Chutang called a maidservant in.

The maidservant wrung her hands and said hesitantly, ”...Second Miss, they probably won’t be coming today. The main gate at Fengling Lane has been shut tight since last night. Not a single person has come out!”

What a time for this to happen! The entire Capital City was waiting for the results of the investigation into Ye Heng’s case. Everyone wished they had never associated with the Ye Family, and now that his only son had died, the family seemed even more cursed.

Besides, there had always been bizarre, supernatural rumors circulating about Ye Mingze. If news of his death got out, wouldn’t that just make a bad situation even worse for the Ye Family?

They probably intended to keep the death quiet until there was a verdict in Ye Heng’s case.

Ye Chutang said, as if it had just occurred to her, ”I almost forgot. They’re still being watched by guards over there, so their movements are naturally restricted.”

The maidservant was baffled.

’What she said was true, but why did it sound so strange?’

Ye Chutang thought for a moment, then said, ”The weather has gotten cooler recently, but this matter cannot be delayed. Go order a coffin and have it sent to the Ye Family.”

The maidservant was completely stunned.

”This... this... Second Miss, this...”

She wanted to say it was inappropriate, but she also felt that it wasn’t exactly wrong. That household was still sealed off. If they didn’t resolve this soon, how could they let the matter drag on?

Ye Chutang took out two silver notes. ”Special circumstances call for special measures. I trust the guards will be accommodating.”

”We are blood relatives, after all,” Ye Chutang said softly. ”We must grant them this final shred of dignity.”

’Otherwise, when Ye Mingze’s body starts to rot and gets wrapped in a ragged mat to be tossed into the wilderness for the dogs and vultures to feast on, won’t his dear father just die from heartache when he finds out?’

Xiao Wu watched the silver notes being handed over and puffed out her cheeks.

’Big Sis worked so hard to earn that Silver, and now she has to spend it on them!’

Ye Chutang patted her little head.

”Let’s not mix matters. No matter what, he was the one who handled all the funeral arrangements for Father, Mother, and Big Brother. Doing this now can be considered repaying that ’kindness’.”

”Prepare the carriage.” Ye Chutang raised a hand to touch her neck, where a wound that was eighty to ninety percent healed was once again covered with gauze. ”Second Aunt and Shixian are not permitted to leave the residence, so I must go in their stead to see Second Uncle.”

’Ye Heng is destined never to see his own son one last time. But surely, he can’t remain completely ignorant of the news of his son’s death and burial, can he?’

’I just wonder if Ye Heng will appreciate this gesture?’
