I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 495: Chapter 201: Scrounging Offerings, Crow’s Mouth (5k)_2

The little girl is filial and sensible, well-taught by her grandmother.

Even though her grandmother is no longer here, Chen Qimo still puts out offerings and prays at the proper times.

And she remembers her grandmother’s teachings and never wastes food.

As a result, even after her grandmother passed away, she’s still looking out for Chen Qimo—feeding her from beyond.

Now Wen Yan understood why, even though several years had passed since her grandmother’s death, Chen Qimo—despite her frail body and her tendency to attract ghosts—had managed to live just fine.

This had nothing to do with luck.

Even Chen Qimo herself didn’t realize that her actions were actually saving her own life.

Wen Yan carried four small bowls of wonton noodles into the living room. After reheating them in the microwave, he brought them out and let everyone share.

The Sparrow Cat, who just said it was full, could somehow eat again after only a few minutes.

Even the Little Zombie got a bite of noodles blessed with Yang Energy. The little guy was a bit picky, and didn’t really want to eat, but Wen Yan insisted he finish it.

Doesn’t even know how to shamelessly take advantage; Wen Yan didn’t even need to guess—this stuff was obviously for saving lives as a last resort.

Even though he didn’t feel anything, he was sure it was definitely useful.

He also believed that Grandmother would absolutely be willing to share her food with those at home.

After everyone finished the four small bowls of wonton noodles and were full, all the rest went into Wen Yan’s belly.

Wen Yan patted his belly, mood greatly improved.

Was it really ”Grandmother’s Blessing” he wanted?

Of course not—what he wanted was to have ”Grandmother’s Blessing” applied to himself, so he could be the beneficiary.

Why wouldn’t you hold onto a golden thigh if you could? Wen Yan felt the warmth in his stomach, not sure whether it was from being full or from this protection.

Anyway, the feeling of that sudden boost in security was just awesome.

Just as Pei Tugou was heading to work, he took Chen Qimo along, hitched a ride to drop her off at school, and Wen Yan followed Pei Tugou to the Virtue City Funeral House.

”You’ve really been away a long time on this business trip. It must be pretty cold in Guanzhong County by now, huh?”

”Yeah, they’ve probably already started heating over there.”

”That’s something: even working at a funeral home requires business trips,” Pei Tugou sighed. He used to think Wen Yan was a technical talent and his work would be easier.

But seeing it now, it’s not easy at all—he’s always running around, so exhausted after coming back from a trip that he needs two or three days to recover.

”Where do you find any job that’s easy, safe, and offers steady profit? It’s all the same. You’ve gotten used to it by now, right, bro?”

”Nothing to get used to, really. It’s way better than getting sun and wind on a construction site. I might not even come across a tough job once a month—it’s actually pretty relaxing. The only thing is, I’m making way more money than I expected, and it’s making me a little uneasy.”

”That’s hard-earned money, just take it easy.”

”But this month I got 48,000. I asked Director He, and he said it’s exactly what I should get, no problem. The money transferred into the account is definitely good—if there were any issues, it would’ve been clawed back a long time ago.” Pei Tugou was still a bit worried, so he grabbed the chance to ask Wen Yan.

”How much was last month?”

”Forty thousand last month.”

”Only forty thousand?” As soon as Wen Yan said it, he noticed the decorations hanging from the streetlamp by the road and quickly added, ”I mean, your work is pretty dangerous, plus you get weird looks from people. It’s fine, but just remember—never tell anyone your real salary. If someone asks, just say you make four or five thousand.”

”Oh... ”

Wen Yan thought to himself that he’d have to ask Heizi later—so many decorations on Virtue City’s streetlamps and they only got paid a few ten thousand? Could they be any stingier?

When he got to the funeral home, Wen Yan got out of the car, didn’t rush inside, watched Pei Tugou leave, then called Cai Qidong to ask what the deal was.

When Cai Qidong heard Wen Yan’s question, he actually laughed out loud.

”Based on merit, giving him five million in one go wouldn’t be an issue. But the thing is, do you think with his situation it’s appropriate to pay it all at once?”

”You’re just talking nonsense. Pay what’s owed; don’t start cutting someone’s bonus under the excuse of doing it for their own good.”

”I’m just adding it up at a high deposit rate, don’t worry—it’s not getting cut. He’ll get it monthly.”

”Oh my, Minister Cai, you’re so kind, even managing his money for him? Should I take my bro to kowtow and thank you?”

”...” Cai Qidong was speechless.

He knew very well that Pei Tugou was, by nature, an honest, hard-working guy—even Director He had praised him behind his back. Employees like that are exactly what Virtue City Funeral House desperately needs.

If you suddenly handed millions of cash to such an honest person, he’d probably lose sleep at night.

So the only way is to give him tens of thousands each month and then give him a big chunk as a year-end bonus.

”Minister, don’t tell me, in the grand Scorching Sun Department, with all that talent, you can’t even come up with a proper, reasonable explanation?

Are you calling yourself useless, or are you insulting all your talented colleagues, huh?

Man, I’ve never heard of anyone getting their salary and bonus in installments.

Early in the morning and my brain’s already buzzing from the shock.”

”Seriously, it’s not about withholding his pay. You can’t honestly not know the kind of impact a normal person suddenly getting rich would have.

For most people, whatever, it’s their own business how they handle it.

But for him, based on our assessment and intel, the more honest, steady, and down-to-earth he is, the stronger his ability actually becomes.
