I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 487: Chapter 198: Informant, Inner Voice (5k)_3

In the region between the Yin River and the Styx River, there were hardly any Ghosts from the Yin River; it was mostly populated by souls like them—trapped in limbo. Here they drifted aimlessly, sinking deeper into this state, unable to reach either the Yin River or the Styx River, forever lost. Even if some among them, blessed with heaven-defying fortune, suddenly found their way, escaping this place remained impossible.

Having returned to shore, he retrieved the Stable from the Blue Mane Horse’s mouth and then rode a horse back.

Mai Conggui quietly returned to the small town. As soon as he emerged, he received a text message: a deposit of five thousand Yuan had arrived, along with a message from Wen Yan.

”This month’s salary. Regarding the investigation, if you feel it’s dangerous, just give up and let me know. After all, danger itself is valuable intelligence.”

Mai Conggui was somewhat shocked. They had actually paid him, and in advance at that!

He had never encountered such a straightforward boss before; with previous employers, every month’s salary would be docked for various reasons.

He opened his phone and looked at his notepad. He hadn’t made any money for two days. He decided he might as well check for chauffeur gigs today to warm up a bit.

He opened the chauffeur platform. Luck was on his side today, as he quickly received an order.

When he arrived at the restaurant entrance, the heavily intoxicated client was still boasting to others, so Mai Conggui waited quietly.

After five minutes, he helped the client into the car. Glancing back at the dazed customer, Mai Conggui’s ears twitched, and a voice materialized beside him.

This damned weather is really cold...

He turned on the car’s air conditioning and adjusted the vents so they wouldn’t blow directly on anyone.

I should just go home to sleep; the temperature dropped too quickly...

Mai Conggui looked back at the groggy client and asked, ”Boss, should I follow the prearranged route, or would you like to go somewhere else?”

”Somewhere else. Jinxiu Garden,” the client slurred.

”Got it.”

In no time, they arrived. Once he had parked, Mai Conggui helped the client out of the car, supporting him by his clothes.

”Boss, shall I take you upstairs?”

”Hmm...”

He escorted the other man to his doorstep. It was only when the client’s skin brushed against his that the client gave a jolt.

His hands are so cold. Being a chauffeur isn’t easy. This young man isn’t bad.

At the door, the client had sobered up a bit. He rummaged through his bag, pulled out two large bills, and stuffed them into Mai Conggui’s hand.

”Thank you, boss.”

After watching the client go inside, Mai Conggui returned to the underground parking lot. He rode his folding bicycle against the cold night wind, departing blissfully.

Since his death, he could occasionally hear people’s inner voices, Ghosts included.

However, when facing very powerful individuals, he dared not listen, as there were too many strange and unpredictable things he might overhear.

This was the core reason he overheard so many things. He enjoyed visiting the Ghost Market and teahouses, places where he could sense that everyone’s psychological defenses were weaker.

Sometimes, to eavesdrop on something interesting, he would even start boasting to set the mood and liven up the atmosphere.

Besides, he genuinely enjoyed bragging and shooting the breeze.

When he was alive, he could chat with his workmates about anything, from recent vegetable prices to international affairs.

This time, meeting Wen Yan, he truly hadn’t dared to listen to anything. He had a persistent feeling that if he dared to listen and learned something he shouldn’t, it would end very badly for him.

The scene of Wen Yan annihilating the Evil Ghost had left a deep impression on him.

This time, his initial plan had been to just muddle through and prioritize saving his own skin. As for being an informant, he figured if they actually paid, he’d just wing it.

But seeing Wen Yan pay upfront and even tell him to prioritize his safety, saying he could give up if it got dangerous, made him reconsider.

He felt that perhaps what he’d heard about the forbidden places had been distorted by rumors.

At the very least, he reasoned, a generous boss who paid upfront and cared about his life probably wasn’t so bloodthirsty that he’d feel out of sorts if he didn’t slaughter a couple of Evil Ghosts each day.

Why not give it a try? See if I can nail this informant role?

If they’re willing to pay upfront, there must be a bonus too, right?

Wen Yan walked out from under Old Zhao’s Family’s home. He looked around but didn’t spot Pei Tugou; he hadn’t seen him since returning from the Netherworld.

After a moment of thought, he went outside the villa area. He shook the Stable, and a burst of Yang Energy forced three Evil Ghosts and two individuals on the verge of becoming Evil Ghosts to tumble out onto the ground.

Then, just a second later, Wen Yan looked back to see Pei Tugou already descending from the wall.

”Brother, I thought something had happened to you; I haven’t seen you around. I prepared this gift especially for you.”

”I was bored out of my mind, so I slept for a few days to digest. I didn’t sense your return,” Pei Tugou said, flashing a row of large white teeth. Combined with his clothes, which seemed to perpetually ooze blood, his smile gave him the menacing air of a major horror film villain.

”Do you like the gift?”

”I love it! Couldn’t be more satisfied! Three main courses, and I’ll keep the other two to savor later.”

Pei Tugou laughed heartily as Blood Ropes appeared, binding the five Ghosts. The ropes sealed their mouths and noses, preventing them from making any sound.

”Alright, Brother, have fun.”

Wen Yan waved his hand and returned to the residential complex. The scene about to unfold would be too cruel, and he, being kind-hearted, couldn’t bear to watch. It was better to leave quickly. Besides, his presence might make Pei Tugou feel constrained.

When he got home, Chen Qimo was already resting. Sparrow Cat was still eating; that damn creature had ordered takeout again.

Wen Yan couldn’t be bothered with them. He went to the basement, took out an empty spirit tablet, and began to inscribe it.

He had said he would set up a spirit tablet for his great-aunt as soon as he returned, and he had to keep his word.

He didn’t quite understand how the Big Executor, who should have dissipated completely, could still manifest a hint of consciousness in the Netherworld.

But he believed that his great-aunt would definitely sense him setting up the spirit tablet and his worship.

At least, it would let his great-aunt know that the living still remembered her and that she was still being worshipped.

Wen Yan put himself in her shoes. He thought that if he were dead for over a thousand years and someone still worshipped and remembered him, he would be very happy.
