I Cultivate in a Government Office

Chapter 172: Chapter 109: Promotion to Police Commissioner (3)

”Not a problem.” Secretary Chen turned crisply and led the way, guiding the two of them into an employee-only elevator and up to the floor of the Archives Department’s Personnel Management Section.

Secretary Chen then brought them to an office with a plaque that read ”Deputy Section Chief.” There were two other offices for deputy section chiefs nearby.

The office door was ajar, and a young man inside quickly noticed their arrival. He hurried to his feet and said to Chen Zhi, ”Brother Chen, what a rare sight! What brings you all the way over here?”

Chen Zhi exchanged a few pleasantries, then introduced Vice Director Gao and Yang Wenqing and explained the reason for their visit. The young man, it turned out, was also a secretary.

”Is Section Chief Wang in?”

”She is!”

The young man was very enthusiastic. After greeting Vice Director Gao and Yang Wenqing, he turned and walked toward an exquisite wooden door at the back of the office. A moment later, the sound of knocking followed.

”Come in!”

A steady female voice came from within.

The young man entered cautiously, emerging just over ten seconds later. He said to Chen Zhi, ”Brother Chen, you can take them in now.”

Chen Zhi thanked him, promising to treat him to a meal later, and then led Yang Wenqing into the office. Vice Director Gao, meanwhile, considerately stepped aside and sat on a sofa in the waiting area.

Pushing the door open, Yang Wenqing followed Chen Zhi inside. He saw a middle-aged woman, around fifty years old, with a capable and steady demeanor, sitting behind a small desk. The desk and the surrounding shelves were piled high with all sorts of files. She, too, wore a white uniform, her epaulets indicating she was a police Specialist.

”Director Wang, this is Yang Wenqing. He’s here to complete his Fifth Refinement Cultivation confirmation and promotion procedures,” Secretary Chen said, introducing him.

”Director Wang.” Yang Wenqing stood at attention and saluted.

”A colleague from the front lines. It’s rare to see one so young.” Deputy Section Chief Wang’s smile was gentle, her eyes crinkling as she looked at Yang Wenqing. Then she turned to Chen Zhi. ”Secretary Chen, would you mind waiting outside for a moment?” she asked.

Chen Zhi nodded and tactfully exited the office.

”Sit.”

Deputy Section Chief Wang rose and gestured to the guest sofa in front of her desk.

Yang Wenqing did as instructed and sat down.

”Don’t be nervous. This is just a routine procedure.” Deputy Section Chief Wang stood, walked over, and sat down opposite Yang Wenqing, her tone softening. ”We need to confirm that your Cultivation has truly reached the Fifth Refinement, the ’Meridian Expansion’ stage, and then update your file. The process is very quick.”

As she spoke, a gentle yet undeniable Divine Sense was quietly released, instantly enveloping Yang Wenqing.

Yang Wenqing remained calm and relaxed, circulating his ”Nine Refining Secret Skill” to let his aura flow out naturally.

Deputy Section Chief Wang’s Divine Sense carefully swept over Yang Wenqing’s body, focusing on the strength of his qi and blood, the circulation within his organs, and the state of his meridians. When her Divine Sense made contact with the meridian network inside him—a network far more developed than that of someone who had just entered the Fifth Refinement—a clear flicker of surprise flashed through her calm eyes.

’This is clearly someone who’s already progressed quite far in the Fifth Refinement. He’s even faintly touching the threshold of completion, where the meridians flow as freely as channels.’

She couldn’t help but raise her eyes to study Yang Wenqing again. ’Such a young face. Even at the Municipal Bureau, she’d rarely seen a colleague achieve this level of cultivation at his age.’

However, she was only slightly surprised and quickly regained her composure.

”Fifth Refinement, ’Meridian Expansion.’ Cultivation is stable. Confirmation is accurate.” Deputy Section Chief Wang withdrew her Divine Sense, an appreciative smile returning to her face. ”Congratulations, Specialist Yang. To have achieved so much at your age, your future is bright.”

”Thank you, Director Wang.”

Yang Wenqing replied modestly.

With his Cultivation confirmed, the rest of the process was much simpler.

Deputy Section Chief Wang returned to her desk and took out a set of precise runic instruments. She collected a drop of Yang Wenqing’s blood and recorded his unique Spiritual Qi signature. This information was used to update the core biological and Spiritual Qi identifiers in his file, ensuring uniqueness and preventing forgery.

Once everything was recorded, Deputy Section Chief Wang retrieved six exquisite clothing boxes from a nearby cabinet, each stamped with the Municipal Bureau’s insignia.

”These are your new uniforms—three sets for winter and three for summer. The logistics department prepared them in advance based on your measurements after receiving the notice from your branch last night.”

”The uniforms are a blend of special spirit silkworm silk and runic alloy threads,” Deputy Section Chief Wang explained. ”They have a basic defensive Array built in. When activated, it can block surprise attacks or stray spells from an ordinary Cultivator of the same rank. A simple Spirit Gathering rune is also stitched in, so wearing it daily provides a slight boost to cultivation and helps relieve fatigue.”

”Many of our colleagues enjoy wearing their uniforms regularly after being promoted. It’s not just a status symbol; it’s genuinely practical.”

Yang Wenqing accepted the boxes. They were heavy, and the material felt extraordinary.

”The procedures are mostly complete. Shortly, Secretary Chen will take you to receive your new clearance badge and perform the final system activation. Again, congratulations, Specialist Yang Wenqing.” Deputy Section Chief Wang smiled and extended her hand.

Yang Wenqing shook her hand formally. ”Thank you, Director Wang.”

Deputy Section Chief Wang let go of his hand and glanced toward the door. ”I need to finish recording your new information, so I won’t see you out.”

Taking the hint, Yang Wenqing excused himself and left the office. When Vice Director Gao saw the uniform boxes in Yang Wenqing’s hands, a gratified smile spread across his face.

”Let’s go. One last step: time to get your new badge,” Secretary Chen said, turning to lead them to the next location.

Secretary Chen led them into an unmarked office within the Archives Section. Most of the room was occupied by equipment covered in intricate runes. A staff member in a technician’s uniform came forward to greet them.

After Secretary Chen spoke with him briefly, the staff member guided Yang Wenqing to a silver instrument that stood about waist-high. Its surface was covered with complex grooves and pathways of light.
