Chapter 20: The Witch’s AssassinationGu Ye walked all the way to the main road and took out his phone, preparing to hail a taxi to go home.

”Hum~” A sword’s hum suddenly exploded in the air.

Gu Ye’s mental power was already stronger than an average Bronze Fourth Tier, so he immediately sensed the direction of the attack and hurriedly rolled to the side to dodge.

Having dodged, Gu Ye immediately summoned Zhang Fei to stand guard. He looked at the wound on his arm, which was still bleeding, and felt a wave of lingering fear. If he had been a step slower just now, it wouldn’t have been as simple as an arm injury; his head might have been separated from his body.

Zhang Fei guarded Gu Ye’s side. As a military general, he had no detection skills whatsoever, and was helpless against an enemy who could turn invisible. He could only wait for the enemy to attack before he could counterattack.

Suddenly, the sword’s hum rang out again, and Zhang Fei immediately sensed the direction of the attack.

”Right side!”

Zhang Fei’s eighteen-foot serpent spear intercepted the attack. Gu Ye, standing behind him, also caught a clear look at the assailant; the face looked very much like a man’s, but the figure had many feminine characteristics.

With this much information, how could Gu Ye not guess where this person came from?

Gu Ye’s eyes were fierce, and he gritted his teeth as he spat out three words: ”Witch Society.”

”How did they find me?”

Relying on his mental power, Gu Ye quickly sensed that the assassin’s strength was Bronze Rank Nine, and he realized he was no match at all.

Gu Ye gave Zhang Fei a look, and Zhang Fei immediately understood his intent.

Zhang Fei shouted, and the skill [Roar I] was activated. Before the assassin could react, he was immobilized on the spot, and Gu Ye took the opportunity to run toward the black market cabin.

”Click~ Click”

Gu Ye’s legs moved rapidly as he sprinted with all his might. Suddenly, a crisp, piercing strange sound came from behind him! He looked back, his pupils shrinking abruptly; the assassin had broken free from the immobilization without any effort and was pouncing toward him again like an arrow leaving the bow.

Seeing this, Zhang Fei hurriedly summoned [Dark Cloud Treading Snow · Black Steed] to boost his combat power and went to intercept the assassin, buying Gu Ye time to escape.

Seeing this hulking man blocking him again, the assassin shouted impatiently: ”Get lost!”

Spiritual energy erupted from the assassin’s body, his momentum surging. The longsword, wrapped in surging spiritual energy, tore through the air and slashed fiercely at Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei swung his eighteen-foot serpent spear, resisting with all his might. The moment they made contact, Zhang Fei’s expression changed drastically.

The disparity in their strength was too great. The immense impact swept along the eighteen-foot serpent spear, and Zhang Fei was completely unable to withstand it. His entire body was sent flying several meters away, carving two deep furrows into the ground.

Taking this opportunity, the assassin rapidly approached the fleeing Gu Ye.

Hearing the sound of rushing air approaching from behind, Gu Ye looked anxious. He really didn’t want to waste a life-saving card, but now that his life was on the line, he had no choice but to use it.

Gu Ye took out a card and was just about to use it when a series of piercing honks rang out.

Although the assassin heard the sound, his target remained Gu Ye. He injected spiritual energy into his longsword, flicked his wrist, and the longsword shot toward Gu Ye at high speed.

At the critical moment, a dark shadow emerged from the ground, grabbed Gu Ye’s legs, and interrupted him from continuing to use the card.

The assassin’s longsword also missed its mark. He stood where he was, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings, trying to find Gu Ye’s location. After some searching, in the silent night, there was not a single sound.

”Could he have really escaped?”

Fifty meters underground, a Man in Black took out an oxygen inhaler and put it on the still-bewildered Gu Ye.

”I...”

Gu Ye was about to speak, but the Man in Black instantly covered his mouth.

”Don’t speak, he can hear you.”

A hoarse voice rang in Gu Ye’s mind. Gu Ye looked at him with surprise, then nodded, signaling him to let go.

”Wait for him to leave.”

Seeing that Gu Ye’s summoned entity, Zhang Fei, had also disappeared, the assassin waited for a while, and seeing no movement, left.

Seeing the assassin leave, the Man in Black grabbed Gu Ye and wanted to return to the surface.

Gu Ye reached out to stop him, signaling him to wait a moment. The two waited underground for nearly half an hour, and the Man in Black was getting a bit impatient.

At this moment, Gu Ye tapped him and motioned for him to look up. As Gu Ye had expected, the assassin had made a return attack.

For the next three hours, the assassin made return attacks at irregular intervals, and the two underground watched him speechlessly. The Man in Black was driven to the brink of a breakdown, staring at Gu Ye with resentful eyes; the money for taking this job from Gu Ye was really hard to earn!

Finally, the two waited another three hours, and seeing that the assassin really didn’t appear again, the Man in Black dared to take Gu Ye and escape from underground.

”Final payment.”

Gu Ye settled the payment, and the Man in Black instantly disappeared from his sight, not wanting to see him for even a second. Seeing this, Gu Ye helplessly shrugged; he was paid to do a job, what could he do about it?

Gu Ye hailed another taxi, and the journey home was uneventful.

Back home, Gu Ye took out the medical card and detox card he had prepared, maintaining his consistent style of caution.

Even if there was no poison on the assassin’s sword, he still had to disinfect himself inside and out. He only had one life; if he really died, everything would be gone.

After all the fuss, Gu Ye finally lay on the bed, relaxed. Recalling today’s events, he summarized that his strength was simply not enough. And as for this grudge with the Witch Society, if he had the chance, he would definitely repay them well.

Gu Ye looked at the cold numbers on his phone; he should be able to promote to Bronze Fifth Tier the day after tomorrow.

Since the materials were almost all collected, Gu Ye decided that after his promotion, he would immediately make the bloodline card. Originally, his plan was to postpone the production of the bloodline card.

But today’s encounter left a very deep impression on him; he had almost lost his life.

To ensure his own safety, Gu Ye felt he couldn’t drag it out any longer; otherwise, if the people from the Witch Society came again, he would really be finished.

”However, Sister Mu is across the way, so tonight should be safe. Whatever, I’ll sleep first.”

Gu Ye pulled the quilt over his navel and closed his eyes to sleep.

...

”Old Gu, what’s wrong today? You look listless.”

Chu Ling handed the fresh meat bun in his hand to Gu Ye and walked behind him to sit down.

”I went to bed too late last night.”

Gu Ye didn’t want to tell him about what happened last night to avoid making him worry; Gu Ye knew the personality of this brother of his.

Moreover, the Witch Society was coming for him, and if he dragged Chu Ling into this, the situation might become even more complicated.

As a neutral Evil God Cult, the Witch Society was generally ignored by the Domain Suppression Department in the Yanxia Federation as long as they didn’t cause trouble.

The Witch Society was not like the Black Sheep Cult, Zhu Ren Sect, or other Evil God Cults that specialized in causing trouble on Blue Star. Among all the federations, there were a few Evil God Cults that were considered neutral by default.

After experiencing what happened last night, Gu Ye understood that there was no such thing as a neutral cult; it was just that the interests weren’t enough to touch their bottom line. In a small place like Yunlin City, those people from the Witch Society wanted to covet even a few million Federation coins.

”Old Chu, have you made your bloodline card?”

Gu Ye sensed that Chu Ling was already Bronze Sixth Tier; his cultivation speed was truly fast.

”It’s done.”

”It’s very suitable for a Battle Card Master.”

Gu Ye remembered that the Ye family had hired a Platinum-ranked Card Master to customize bloodline cards specifically for them—yes, them, Chu Ling and Ye Suxuan.

At this time, Ye Suxuan also arrived in the classroom. Seeing that the two were talking about bloodline cards, she interjected:

”The bloodline cards of the two of us are complementary; they can be ranked among the top tier for Battle Card Masters.”

”I heard that Yan Shuangling’s bloodline card has also been made.”

”The bloodline cards for the students from Noble Families have basically all been completed.”

Hearing this news, Gu Ye felt as if he had been struck by lightning, wanting to cry without tears; it meant he was the only one left.
