Chapter 699: The Birth of the Shadow Guard

The Birth of the Shadow Guard

Leon continued, voice even, measured.

”I am a cautious man.”

He took a step forward. Not aggressive. Not retreating. Just enough to close the space.

”You’ve survived this long because you don’t trust easily,” Leon said. ”So have I.”

His eyes flicked briefly to each of them, weighing, calculating.

”You guard something precious. I respect that.”

A pause.

”But I guard more.”

His voice lowered slightly.

”I have wives. I have a kingdom. I have enemies on every border.”

The faint red glow reflected in his golden eyes, turning them almost molten.

”Men smile while sharpening blades. Allies turn when pressure is applied. Hatred for a common enemy binds people... temporarily.”

He stepped closer.

The contracts drifted between them now, within reach.

”I will not risk a mistake that costs my family their lives.”

Silence.

The words didn’t echo — they settled. Heavy. Final.

Max lowered his gaze to the contract in his hands, scanning every line again as if the ink might shift when he blinked. The parchment was thick, unnervingly official. No tricks hidden between the lines. No clever traps buried in legal phrasing.

Their loyalty would be bound.

Their condition regarding the treasure was written clearly—explicitly.

No forced revelation.

No coercion.

If Leon discovered it himself—fair.

If he forced them—loyalty void.

It was written plainly.

Max exhaled through his nose. ”You didn’t twist the wording.”

Leon’s expression didn’t change. ”I said I wouldn’t.”

Rex crossed his arms, eyes sharp. ”Most men in power say many things.”

”And most men in power don’t put it in writing,” Leon replied calmly. ”You guard what you guard. I don’t need you crawling at my feet. I need men who choose to stand.”

Lux finally spoke, her voice softer but steady. ”And if one day you suspect we’re hiding it deliberately?”

”Then I’ll investigate,” Leon said without hesitation. ”But I won’t break my word to satisfy suspicion.”

The room grew still again. Not tense this time—measured.

Max studied Leon’s face carefully, searching for arrogance. For greed. For that subtle hunger men carried when they smelled treasure.

He didn’t see it.

Only certainty.

Lux looked at Max, questioning but trusting.

Rex remained still, though his jaw tightened slightly. He wasn’t afraid. He was calculating.

Max nodded slowly.

”This is reasonable.”

He lifted his hand and bit his thumb lightly. The sting was sharp enough to keep his thoughts clear. Blood welled at the surface, dark and deliberate.

Rex stepped closer. ”No regrets after this.”

Max glanced at him. ”We’ve already chosen.”

He pressed his blood against the contract.

For a brief second, nothing happened.

Then the parchment pulsed.

Rex and Lux followed without hesitation, marking their own blood beside his.

A hush settled, broken only by the soft drone humming through space. Crimson flames burst across each contract, sharp and vivid like a pulse. Light cracked along the pages, sudden and wild. The ink burned bright, then sank inward - gone, yet felt deep.

Frozen in place, Leon stayed silent. His eyes followed everything without a sound.

A sudden brightness flared up - only to fold back on itself moments later.

Light bled through the papers till nothing held them together. Crimson ate the ink like rust on old iron.

Vanished.

A flash of crimson soaked through the air, just for an instant, like breath caught mid-scream. Something in the walls gave way when the markings broke apart - crumbling not with noise but silence, drifting down like ash refusing to burn.

Silence followed.

A single soft clap came from Leon.

A hush fell, yet that noise slipped right between the cracks of silence. It didn’t shout - just arrived, sharp and quiet, like a thread pulled taut across still air.

”Good.”

He stepped back.

The air rushed into their lungs, each of the three brothers catching it like a gift after silence. A pause that felt longer than time finally broke.

Something in Leon’s eyes stayed fixed on them - less like someone checking equipment, more like a ruler judging blades.

”From this day onward, you three are my Shadow Guard.”

A silence followed the words. The name just stayed there, unspoken yet clear.

Not prisoners.

Not servants.

Shadow Guard.

A flicker ran through Max’s frame, tight across the shoulders. Not a single one saw it coming - silence hung thick after. Fingers stirred by his legs, restless, then froze when he caught himself. Stillness settled like dust.

Again came the whisper - Shadow Guard - the words rolling slow, like they carried something heavy.

For a moment, the smallest sibling just stared. Could it really be...?

”It means,” Leon said calmly, ”you move in places where light does not reach. You act where my name cannot be spoken. You stand behind me - unseen - but never beneath me.”

Quiet sat the words. Loud was never their task.

Max straightened slightly.

”Understood... my lord.”

Now his voice held firm. No strain behind it. Not sharp with anger. Simply certain.

Leon watched them.

Heavy tiredness weighed on them, limbs slow and unsteady. Dark marks showed where pressure had pressed too hard. Each pull of air came shaky, left over from what held them tight. Their strength had drained, gone like smoke after fire.

But their eyes -

Burned again.

Purpose had returned.

A lift of the chin came from the second brother. Not staying here as backup, he said

That moment held no blame. Just curiosity waiting to be resolved.

Leon’s gaze shifted to him. ”If I wanted insurance, I would’ve kept the chains.”

A faint pause.

”I don’t keep broken blades. I either discard them... or I sharpen them.”

The littlest brother let out a quiet puff of air, nearly sounding like laughter. Blades now, is it?

Leon’s lips curved faintly. ”That depends on how well you cut.”

Something unspoken clicked into place. Stillness filled the space where words might have gone.

Max exhaled slowly. ”Then we won’t disappoint you.”

”I’m not asking for blind loyalty,” Leon replied. ”I’m asking for competence. Earn your place. The rest will follow.”

What came next stung more than an order ever could.

A shift came over his body, facing the doorway a little more now.

”Rest now. Recover.”

A pause hung on his lips, like words were forming but then changed their mind. Later would carry those unspoken things - promises or doubts - he left floating in silence.

Fingers rising once more, Leon moved his arm into the air.

A subtle twitch of fingers.

The massive door creaked.

Slowly—

It began to open.

And the light from the corridor spilled inside.
