Chapter 666: A Pillar Who Kneels

A Pillar Who Kneels

I Commander Black of the Nagarath Kingdom and High Commander of the Army by order of King Leon

I welcome Your Majesty and my queens to your kingdom

The words rang out clear and steady.

A hush fell, just for a breath. The world held still.

A single knee pressed into the cold stone, Commander Black held himself upright despite the weight. His fist, encased in metal, stayed fixed against his chest like an anchor. Silence shaped his posture - no shaking, no hesitation. Stillness claimed him, the sort earned through years of holding firm when everything else gave way. Head down but resolve unbroken, he waited.

Heavy footsteps echoed behind his words. They did not come from titles or handshakes, but years spent moving through storms few saw. Trust built while walking shifts no one celebrated, during hours when rest felt like myth and staying upright took willpower. Belief lived there. Not automatic belief, rather something shaped slowly, chosen each time pressure rose, kept standing after payments most would refuse.

The women felt it.

Not fear.

Not pressure.

Recognition.

A hum rose from somewhere beneath their ribs, distant as a chime in dark water. That one statement laid it bare - the role he held for Leon, the weight Leon had placed upon him. More than an officer. Far beyond a blade.

A pillar.

A quiet stretch passed before Rias blinked, her red gaze cutting deep but curling at the edges like smoke. Not quite mocking, not quite kind - she held his measure without rushing to prod. The truth in what he said arrived bare, rough around the seams, and that lack of polish? It landed better than any grand promise ever did.

Forward she moved, taking the lead without a word.

Out of nowhere, a quiet grin tugged at her mouth - soft, real, slicing the tight air as dawn breaks gray skies.

Not captain anymore, she said with a small smile, raising her palm like brushing dust off air. Call me Commander Black. Get up.

Footsteps quiet, Black rose slowly, spine aligned without effort. His gaze met theirs - steady, polite, yet firm in its hold.

A sudden shift, sharp yet natural - built not through ritual but repetition over time.

A moment passed as Rias looked at him, red eyes alert, locked onto something worth noticing. Not rushing, yet not soft - her stare held firm. He felt assessed, the weight of rank tested like fabric between fingers.

”Congratulations,” she said at last. ”Becoming commander suits you.”

A small smile flickered across Black’s lips - there, then gone - as though pulled back before it could settle. His words came quiet: ”Thank you, my queen.”

For a second, Rias stopped moving. The term caught her off guard, hanging in the air like dust after a slammed door.

That look didn’t last - a tiny spark, really, vanishing before anyone could name it. Her eyes slid toward Aria first, then settled on Black again; now her lips curled, soft and sure, like a secret clicking shut behind her thoughts.

”You say that naturally,” Rias observed. ”Not forced. Interesting.”

”It’s not a habit,” Black replied evenly. ”It’s acknowledgment.”

Out of nowhere, a quiet laugh slipped from Aria as she moved ahead. Silk flowed around her like it knew the plan. Mischief sparkled in those violet eyes, yet something kind lingered underneath. Rias froze mid-step, words stuck.

”Looks like command has softened you, Black. When you were a captain, you barely spoke in full sentences.”

A soft laugh slipped out as Black let his breath go. This moment, he had chosen to say what needed saying

What happens next? Aria said, voice soft.

His eyes locked onto hers without looking away.

”Now,” he said, inclining his head, ”I choose my words more carefully.”

Aria arched a brow, clearly pleased. ”Careful words from you? That is a promotion.”

He turned slightly toward her. ”Queen Aria, command hasn’t softened me. It has... clarified things.”

A quiet settled over his face at those words. Not stiff, just solid - like standing upright was the only way to hold what came out of his mouth.

”Oh?” Aria teased. ”Clarified how heavy the crown is?”

Laughter danced in her voice, yet her gaze stayed fixed on him, watching closely to see if he’d smile back.

A flicker in Black’s eyes moved beyond the gate, beyond stone barriers, settling on the distant palace. Silence held him for just one breath. His words came after, steady, planted firm, like someone long used to carrying weight.

”Our kingdom may still be young,” he said evenly, ”but my king is not small. When His Majesty places responsibility on your shoulders, it feels like a mountain. You don’t become soft under that weight.”

Aria exhaled, so softly it barely stirred the air. Her smile slipped away - not gone, just changed - shaping into a stillness that watched inward.

”So command didn’t harden you,” she said softly. ”It taught you where to stand.”

Black inclined his head a fraction. ”It taught me what cannot be dropped.”

Aria gave a single nod. ”That makes sense,” she said

Folks nearby held their breath, eyes fixed. One by one, they made sense of it in ways only they could. Each took it inward, shaped by what she already knew.

Stillness sat deep in Cynthia’s dark gaze, watching. Not a blink missed as Black spoke, each phrase weighed without sound. How steady could those words really be? Her silence held the answer before it was asked.

A look of clear curiosity crossed Nova’s face as she took him in. Her attention stayed fixed, impossible to miss.

A flicker of honor showed in Tsubaki’s eyes, fingers drifting close to her hip without thought - like one warrior recognizing another.

Mia looked at Cassidy, then away - something heavy hung between them, unspoken but clear. A pause stretched out, filled only by what they both knew without saying.

Firm they stood, Lira and Sona - no speech needed, just knowing. Not bowing, yet true. Devotion clear, though never bent.

A quiet breath left Rias as she shifted her shoulders, the tightness fading like steel finding its hilt again.

”Well,” she said, lips curling, ”if we’re done weighing mountains...”

The hush between them softened like a held breath finally let go. Not vanished - just eased into the background, quiet but present. Stillness stayed on their skin, each person pausing before breaking the line of silence. Waiting settled instead, low and steady, watching who might move first.

Rias did.

A shadow moved ahead, red eyes flashing when they landed on Black - and past him, toward the soldiers behind. Not measuring. Not hesitating. Deciding.

Right then, Commander,” she said, voice lifting a touch yet still steady. ”Talk’s done. Now lead on to my husband

Almost a whisper now, her tone shifted slightly at the end. Not frustration - everyone saw through that. What showed instead was faith. Built slowly, tested by shared storms.

Right then, Black swung toward her, spine snapping upright. What he said next spilled out like it had been waiting: the reason showed in how fast his voice followed
