Chapter 659: Let Them Gather

Let Them Gather

Leon’s eyes hardened.

”And if William raised his banner tomorrow?”

Ronan swallowed.

”More.”

Leon nodded.

”And if I ordered you to execute every noble who has not publicly sworn to me?”

Ronan’s fingers twitched.

”...The capital would drown.”

A tight line formed across Leon’s mouth. His jaw held still, like it was waiting.

”And if I do nothing?”

His eyes locked onto Ronan. Then held there.

”Then they will keep plotting.”

Leon exhaled slowly.

”No clean path.”

A ghost of a grin tugged at Ronan’s lips, sharp with quiet regret.

”Kings rarely have clean paths.”

A silence settled between them as Leon looked on. His gaze held nothing she could name.

Between them, silence grew thick, pressing down like stillness just before steel cuts air.

Then Leon spoke.

”We’re still standing in a dangerous situation.”

Ronan’s brow twitched slightly.

A quiet moment passed before Leon spoke up, his voice cutting through the stillness -

”Why are you still here?”

Ronan blinked.

Still talking, Leon kept his voice down, though it didn’t shake.

”You’ve seen everything. You understand my position better than anyone.”

Fingers curled tight, knuckles turning white. The grip tightened without warning. A sudden hardness showed in his palm.

”If I said I’m hanging over a deep ocean, clinging to a single rotten wooden plank... it wouldn’t be an exaggeration.”

His gaze locked onto Ronan’s. A still moment passed between them.

”You could have fled.”

”You could have abandoned me and lived the rest of your life in peace.”

”You could have bent the knee to William.”

His gaze sharpened.

”So, tell me, Ronan...”

”Why didn’t you?”

For a moment, Ronan stayed quiet. Silence stretched before any words came.

He stepped forward.

Down went his body, settling on a single knee.

Not dramatically.

Not ceremonially.

Simply.

”I am here because you are my lord,” Ronan said.

It didn’t shake once when he spoke.

”Even if you ask me a thousand times. Even if you doubt us a thousand times more.”

Up went his gaze.

”My answer will never change.”

A slight pull showed near his jawline. The tension there seemed quiet but clear. His face held it without saying anything.

”We follow you because you are our lord.”

”Not because of glory.”

”Not because of reward.”

”But because you chose us.”

”Because you walk ahead of us.”

”Because you carry the weight first.”

His eyes stayed fixed on the man. Quiet moments passed between them.

That fact wasn’t new to him.

Fear never shook their loyalty - he counted on that. Each face in the crowd meant something real. Through storms or silence, they stayed close. Not because he asked, but because trust had already taken root.

It was clear in his mind that leaving him behind wasn’t an option.

And yet...

He always asked.

Far from it - his trust remained steady.

Yet a piece of him had to listen. Still, something inside required those words.

Again.

And again.

Leon exhaled softly.

”Stand.”

Ronan obeyed.

A quiet strength sat behind Leon’s eyes. Stillness held his look in place.

”If you ever decide to leave...”

Ronan moved his head from side to side, slow at first, then quicker.

”I won’t.”

Frowning slightly, Leon looked at his own face.

Not for emotion.

Not for loyalty.

For fracture lines.

He found none.

His eyes found the blade again. A quiet, steady voice broke the silence - Ronan

Ronan slowly stood up. He gave a small bow. This movement was very quiet. He did it on purpose. Ronan rising to his height made him look even more serious. The way Ronan moved was quiet he was being very deliberate.

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

”Double scout density.”

”Yes.”

”Rotate patrol routes at random.”

”Yes.”

”Keep monitoring William.”

”Yes.”

A brief pause.

”Do not move against him yet.”

A little line showed up on Ronans forehead. It was not a deal but you could see it.

Leons footsteps stopped. Then Leon spoke up his voice was steady. You could hear a cold edge, in what Leon said.

”Let him gather.”

Ronan’s eyes widened by a hair.

Silence stretched.

Then realization struck.

”...You intend to let him expose everyone who believes you are temporary.”

Frozen in place, Leon kept his eyes locked on the blade.

”A net.”

A hush fell as Ronan let his chin dip downward.

A huge one,” Leon said, his mouth barely twitching.

Ronan exhaled. ”Yes, my king.”

A weight moved across Leon’s feet.

Each breath made the ache sharper. It settled deep, refusing to let go.

He welcomed it.

”Two more days,” Leon said.

”For my wives to arrive.”

”Yes.”

”After that...”

Leon’s eyes darkened.

”...we start closing hands.”

Ronan felt a chill crawl up his spine.

Not fear.

Anticipation.

He bowed.

”As you command.”

His hand moved toward the blade once more.

”Send a message to Lady Alina.”

Ronan straightened.

”Tell her to accelerate negotiations.”

”Yes.”

”Make remaining nobles bow.”

Ronan nodded.

”And return to the capital as soon as possible.”

”As you command.”

Ronan hesitated.

”Your Majesty...”

Leon glanced sideways.

”Hmm?”

Footsteps slow, Ronan picked each word like a stone from a stream.

”You do not need to shoulder everything alone.”

Leon smirked faintly.

”I know.”

Funny thing, Ronan caught it straight away - the twist wasn’t lost on him.

Fingers closed on the hilt, Leon steady. The grip fit like an old thought returning. Metal cool beneath his palm now. A breath passed while he stood there. Not moving. Just holding what was given.

The moment it landed, the heaviness took hold.

His muscles screamed.

That meant nothing to him.

Ronan stepped back.

Paused.

”Leon.”

A glance passed from Leon toward the man. He held it a moment without speaking.

Ronan spoke quietly.

”Whatever history writes about you...”

Leon waited.

Ronan finished.

”...it will never be simple.”

Leon smiled faintly.

”Good.”

Ronan turned.

Walked away.

Facing the blade, Leon stood still. The sword waited ahead of him.

Faced the weight.

Faced the future.

He pulled.

Muscles screaming.

Veins bulging.

The blade rose.

Slow.

Relentless.

Born with the weight of a crown upon its edge.
