Chapter 680: Where Duty Walks First

Where Duty Walks First

Out came a sigh from Rias, heavy on purpose but soft at heart. That moment arrived

Her lips curved into a quiet grin. ”That man on the throne.”

Steady on his feet, Leon held their eyes without blinking, the heat of moments before now firm, like stone underfoot.

”If I delay now, someone else bleeds tomorrow.”

Heavy silence filled the air. Sharp edges stayed dull. The sentences arrived without warning.

So the grievance never got a chance to take shape.

That sound they heard wasn’t new. It carried a weight they’d felt before, one that settled deep without needing words.

Before fights, they’d know that sound. It came again now.

Earlier choices had redrawn maps while splitting old partnerships apart.

A shadow moved forward when the moment came. One foot followed another, though silence would have been safer. Heat rose ahead, yet steps kept going. Not bravery, just presence where others stayed away. The line between waiting and walking blurred fast.

A flicker of motion came from Natasha. For just a beat more, her eyes stayed locked on him before one slow nod broke the silence.

Move,” she stated. Sharp. Clear. Without doubt. Her voice held no question.

Cynthia folded her hands in front of her, posture straight, eyes calm but searching. ”We didn’t come here to make you softer,” she added. ”If anything, we came to make sure you don’t carry everything alone.”

A breath slipped out of Rias, drawn long on purpose - though irritation never touched her eyes. Moving nearer, she let her hand drift along his arm, touch so faint it could vanish.

”Just don’t disappear for days again,” she muttered. ”Some of us prefer knowing whether our king is alive.”

A softness crept into Leon’s face, tension loosening like a held breath finally released.

”I won’t.”

A silence sat around Aria, heavy but soft. Watching - always watching - he caught her gaze tracing lines across his face. Those purple eyes, sharp yet slow, seemed fixed on a weight only she could feel.

Quietly, she spoke the words. You are not who you were.

His eyes stayed fixed on hers, steady. Not a blink. Not a look away.

”Yes.”

It did not deny anything. Nor did it offer regret.

Out of nowhere, Kyra spoke up - her words steady, clear. Not loud, just firm: ”It’s heavier.” Like she’d named something they all sensed but kept quiet about.

He didn’t argue.

”Crowns aren’t light,” he replied.

A faint sound left Rias. ”You always did look better without one.”

A look slid across his face, aimed her way. Chaos suited her better, he’d say

She smiled. ”Only when you’re the one controlling it.”

Mia glanced at Cassidy, their eyes meeting without a word. Then stillness settled as Mia let her hands rest, waiting until sound returned to her throat.

After that, we will lend a hand with the carrying, she said - quiet yet firm.

Cassidy nodded. ”You don’t get to be the only strong one.”

A weight pressed inside Leon’s ribs. Not sharp - just heavy. Like breath caught mid-pull.

His eyes met theirs, then stayed. Not just glanced. Actually saw.

A flicker passed over his face, one heartbeat where he seemed the person who’d owned Silver City through jokes, not quiet.

A sudden grab from Natasha - then Aria matched her move. One after the other, they both held it tight.

Then it passed.

The king returned.

Move along now, his voice soft. Take time to recover

Now it held nothing but care. Not a trace of command remained.

Each person began moving toward the stairs, led by the maids climbing ahead. Underfoot, the velvet carpet soaked up sound with every step. Light from above danced across gold-edged walls, bouncing in soft amber waves.

Footsteps softened the room’s voice. A hush settled deeper after every move forward.

Up past midway, Rias let her pace drop, hand brushing the smooth rail. Strength isn’t found in solitude, he believes - she whispered it like a secret.

Cynthia answered from behind her. ”He walks alone so we don’t have to.”

Halfway up, Rias stopped. She turned her head toward what she’d left behind.

Footsteps echoed as Leon moved ahead, heading for the far hallway.

Not watching them.

Not hesitating.

Moving forward.

Always forward.

She smiled faintly.

Just like every time before, her voice barely rose above a whisper.

Next to her moved Aria. Quiet steps matched pace without a word.

”Not the same,” she corrected softly. ”Just... bigger.”

Down her hand moved on the carved wood, voice speaking slow. Above, high up, the ceiling drew her gaze without trying. Sunlight hit golden edges of curtains, filling rooms with amber glow. Light bounced off crystal things hanging overhead - tiny sparks frozen midair. For someone raised among titles and estates, even that felt too much.

A soft puff of air escaped Rias through her nostrils, amusement tangled with surprise. ”Bigger?” she said low, eyes drifting across the space. Should this be bigger, then knowing your idea of too much might shake her

Syra laughed under her breath. ”You’re just sulking because you didn’t expect him to outshine your family estate.”

Rias raised an eyebrow. She said she did not pout

”You absolutely sulk.”

A hush fell when a gentle cough broke the silence. Near the lofty windows, Kyra stayed still, her gaze fixed on Leon walking away, not on the gleaming stone or gilded walls. Her voice came low. Not space that matters, she told herself out loud. Meaning holds weight here

That stilled them.

Beneath the shadow of the arch, movement brought him to a stop at the entrance of the private chamber.

A beat passed before he spoke again.

Faint sounds of laughing drifted down to him from upstairs.

Soft.

Alive.

Home.

A quiet hush filled the air as his fingers touched the smooth metal. One single moment passed, then another, and the tightness in his ribs began to loosen. Laughter drifted through the hall, bright and near, calming the part of him that never stayed still.

He didn’t turn.

Footsteps above slowed. Aria caught it mid-breath. Not silence - suspension. Her eyes narrowed toward the hall. Someone had listened. The words slipped out low: ”That boy picked up every sound we made.” Stillness answered back

”Of course he did,” Sona replied gently. ”He always does.”

”Then why won’t he come back up?” Mia asked, almost too softly.

Stillness sat heavy in the air, outlasting what felt natural. It held its ground past the point of ease.

Rias crossed her arms but her voice softened. ”Because if he comes back now, he won’t leave again.”

Silence hung around her as Syra braced on the rail, gaze steady. Her green eyes held a quiet weight now, nothing like their usual spark. Then came the words - low, unhurried - ”He stays, he pays.”

Kyra nodded once. ”Duty is already waiting for him.”

Breathing out, Leon let the air leave his lungs down there.

Up he rose, stepping past the tall doors of the chamber, eyes fixed ahead. Behind him, the silence settled like dust on stone.

Footsteps grew quiet as they moved down the hall.

Frozen in place, the women stayed above. Quiet filled the rooms where they stood.

A silence settled. Nobody broke it just yet.

Now the air held a weight they hadn’t noticed before - less bright, less loud. More like silence after a name is called.

”He didn’t hesitate long,” Aria said quietly.

”No,” Sona replied. ”But he did hesitate.”

Mia brought her palms close, fingers touching. She said it was time to stop

A small, lopsided grin tugged at Rias’s lips. ”He was trouble the day we said yes.”

Syra tilted her head. ”We married an ambitious one.”

Kyra corrected them both, voice steady. ”We married a man who refuses to run from responsibility.”

A pause.

Then, softer -

”And we chose to stand beside him.”

Away from the door, his wives paused inside their fresh dwelling, golden glow above, walls rising tall around them.

A hush moved between the open panes, tugging at fabric along the edges. Light spilled inside, washing over smooth wood, rising step by step like something patient.

They sighed.

Not from disappointment.

From understanding.

A rail creaked under Mia’s grip as she leaned forward. His trail vanished into shadow beyond the trees - returning only when night deepened

”Probably,” Rias said.

Syra smirked faintly. ”And he’ll pretend he isn’t exhausted.”

Aria’s mouth lifted at the corners, yet her eyes stayed far away. She spoke softly, as if to herself: ”We can act like it never happened.”

Laughter slipped out, barely above a whisper. Closer than before. Held tight between their shoulders.

A woman became his wife.

Yet here they remained, next to a ruler.

And that meant -

Now and then, love stood back as duty stepped ahead.

Kyra turned from the railing at last. ”Then let’s make sure this place truly becomes a home,” she said. ”So when he returns, it feels different from every throne room he’s ever walked through.”

Sona nodded. ”Warm.”

”Alive,” Mia added.

Syra grinned. ”Ours.”

A soft glow came from above, where the chandeliers hung, barely catching the light.

A soft wind moved through the fabric, making it drift like water. Each fold lifted then settled without hurry.

In that wide, sunlit room inside his home -

The kingdom breathed.
