Chapter 629: When the City Holds Its Breath

When the City Holds Its Breath

The door closed behind Leon with a thud, like wood hitting wood. This sound shut him off from the hallways the light from the lanterns that was getting weaker and all the people who were watching him in the big house. When Leon was in his room the air was very still. It was quiet in a way that made him feel cozy, like when you wrap yourself in a towel after taking a long bath.

For a moment he just stayed still. He did not move for a heartbeat.

He stood inside the door without a shirt on his muscles a little tense. His body did not seem to know that it was okay to calm down. He was breathing slowly and deeply like someone who had been holding everything inside all day because he had to. The room was quiet. It was not a empty quiet. The silence felt heavy like it usually does after a lot of noise and when people are expecting something to happen after people have been watching him.

Leon just let the feeling stay with him for a while he did not try to get rid of it. Leon let it linger.

The floor creaked under his feet. It sounded really loud when he moved. He rolled his shoulders, one and then the other and he felt the tension go away a little bit at a time. When he was outside everything he did was carefully thought out every word he said was being listened to. But in this place the floor beneath his feet was still creaking he did not need to pretend to be someone. He did not need to protect himself with a mask or anything, like that like the armor people wear to keep themselves safe.

The moonlight came into the room through the window. It made a line on the floor and touched his skin gently. Little bits of dust floated in the moonlight like stars that were falling very slowly. He looked at the dust for a moment. He was really interested in it. It was like the dust was showing him how to move slowly. The moonlight and the dust were very peaceful. The moonlight was shining on the floor and, on him.

The room had a smell. It smelled like wood and a little bit of lavender. This made the room feel clean and nice. Somebody put some sachets in the room. The smell of the sachets was not too strong. It was nice to smell. The smell of lavender was, around him. It made him feel better. He breathed it in. It helped him feel like he was really there. The smell of the lavender was gentle. It made him feel calm. He liked the smell of the room. The room smelled like wood and lavender.

Just Leon.

No titles.

No eyes on him.

Only quiet.

The smell of something was all, around him. It was not strong. It made him feel okay. The soft scent was very calming. It made him feel like everything was going to be alright. The soft scent was gentle. It seemed to wrap itself around him.

Leon stood there for a bit he did not want to move because he thought the quiet would go away if he did. He put up his hand. Rubbed the back of his neck his fingers touched the tight feeling, under his skin and he let out a slow breath that he had been holding since he left the hall. Leon had been holding his breath for a while he just did not know it until then.

The maid she was a picture that came into his mind for a second. Her eyes were wide she was walking fast and she looked kinda clumsy which is not what you expect to see in a fancy place like a palace.. He just shook his head a little and let the thought go. Tonight was not about the maid. Tonight was not about anybody. It was, about tonight.

Tonight was about taking slow breaths and trying to relax. The whole night was focused on breathing you know, just breathing and letting go of everything. Breathing was the thing, on my mind tonight.

He walked further into the room. His boots made quiet noises on the floor. It was really quiet. The quiet stayed that way until he saw the table by the wall. Someone had put a tray on the table while he was away. The tray was set out nicely like someone had tried hard to make it look good. The room was still quiet. The table with the tray, on it looked neat and careful like someone had treated it with a lot of respect the table and the tray.

A full meal was waiting for him. He had a meal waiting for him. The full meal was ready and waiting for him.

Warm bread is really nice. The center of the bread is still soft when you tear the warm bread.

Roasted meat, sliced cleanly, the edges dark and fragrant.

A bowl of broth, thin threads of steam drifting lazily into the air.

Next, to everything there was a big glass bottle of wine. The wine was a deep red color. It was so dark that it looked almost black because the room was not very bright.

For a moment he just looked at the food. Someone had taken the time to make sure he would have something to eat. The thought of this was really calming. It was a feeling to know that someone cared about him and wanted to make sure he had food.

He was still standing. He did not sit down. Not just yet.

Leon turned around. Walked to the window. The window was really cool on his fingers. This was nice because the room was very warm. He leaned in a bit and looked out at the city of Vel. The city of Vel went on and on, beneath him.

Rooftops are stacked on top of each other like waves. The chimneys are sending out streams of smoke. There are lamps that are flickering over the place lighting up the streets where people are walking around in the distance. The rooftops look really nice at night when the lamps are shining. Rooftops and streets are pretty quiet except, for the sound of people walking and the lamps flickering.

The capital was always awake. It did not make a lot of noise at this time. It was not completely quiet either. You could still hear some sounds. People talking quietly in a tavern a few streets away a carriage moving slowly over the cobblestone road and the soft flapping of night birds that only flew around after midnight. The capital was a place and it was always doing something even when most people were asleep.

From this height everything looked really small. It all seemed manageable. It was almost peaceful when I looked out at everything, from here the whole scene was very peaceful the world of people and things and buildings everything just looked small and manageable and peaceful.

The window was opened by him he cracked the window open a bit so the window was not closed all the way the window was cracked open.

The night air came in. It smelled like smoke and stone. It touched his skin. It felt cool and nice. The city was like it was touching him too to make sure he was really there. He just stood there. Let the air stay for a moment. He looked down at the streets. They were all mixed up like a big puzzle. There were people there and they were all doing their own things but he could kind of guess what they were going to do next. The night air and the city and the people all felt very familiar to him. He liked the way the city felt rough like stone and the night air was cool, on his skin.

He put his elbows on the windowsill and his shoulders felt a little better. The window was cold on his hands. Below a door opened and people laughed softly but it was quiet again, in a moment. The city just kept going it did not know it was about to be still.

Things have felt really different lately. The air feels tight. It is like the air is waiting for something to happen. Something is going to snap. The air is waiting for that something to snap.

He had this feeling that something was off. It was a feeling that he could not shake off. The feeling was subtle. He knew it was there and he could not ignore it. This was the feeling that had helped him many times before. He knew a storm was coming. It was not making a lot of noise yet. He could not see it yet.. He knew it was real. The storm was. He had to be ready, for it.

He said to himself ”Not yet.” He looked out at the horizon. His eyes got smaller. The horizon was all he could see. He was waiting for something to happen. It had not happened yet. He was looking at the horizon just waiting.

Not yet.

But soon.

The words felt like a promise to him. He stood there for a while feeling the cool night air on his skin. It was like the world outside was telling him it was still moving, even though he was standing still behind the glass. Below he heard a faint noise coming from the city, which was mostly asleep. He listened to it for a moment then he breathed out slowly. Stepped back. The window closed with a click and he could not hear the sounds from outside anymore.

For a heartbeat he remained there, hand still resting against the pane, as if part of him hadn’t quite let go of the night yet. Then he turned away and moved toward the small table. His stomach wasn’t growling, but there was a hollow ache beneath his ribs—fatigue, not hunger, the kind that came from carrying too much for too long. He lowered himself into the chair, and the wood creaked under his weight, a quiet, ordinary sound that felt strangely grounding.
