Litany of Winter

Miriam did not read the entry aloud.

The older register remained open between them while she pulled the lamp closer and opened the second register beside it. A narrower book followed from the shelf, then a tied bundle of loose sheets. Soon the table was crowded with records from different hands and years, and they did not always agree.

Leo drew out the chair opposite her. “Which one do you trust?”

“That depends on the question.” Severin nearly sighed. Miriam’s gaze shifted to him.

She turned the oldest register toward them. “This entry was written by the Tide-Seer who witnessed the recovery. This note beside it was added twenty-nine years later by her successor. The family account is older than the note, but the copy I have was made by a grandson who was not born when the drowning happened.”

Armin leaned over the table. “What about the loose page?”

“Statement from one of the boatmen. Firsthand. He was also drunk when he gave it.” Severin looked from the page to Miriam. “He says so himself,” she added, which helped.

A door opened at the back of the room. A woman younger than Miriam came through carrying another lamp and a tray with four cups. She set both down without interrupting.

“My niece, Clara,” Miriam said.

Clara gave them a brief nod. After one look at the paper taking over the table, she fetched a small notebook from the shelf Miriam indicated and left them to it.

Leo tapped an entry near the bottom of the old page. “Claimed by the Keeper. What happened to him?”

“He drowned.”

“I mean after.”

“So do I.” Severin rested an elbow against the table while Miriam shifted the register so the writing faced them. “The man went overboard during a winter crossing, and two people saw him disappear beneath the water. His body was never recovered. ‘Claimed by the Keeper’ records the judgment that he drowned and was already received.”

“No rite?” Leo asked.

“There was mourning. There was no body to return.”

Miriam opened another book and found a later entry. Returned to sea had been written beneath a woman’s name.

“This one died in her sister’s house. Fever. Her body was carried down once the weather cleared and returned to the sea according to custom.”

She turned the book slightly toward them.

“That phrase does not tell you how she died. It tells you what happened afterward.”

Careful names could hide ugly work. He had learned that much since joining the Order. Back in Blackhaven, people usually found gentler words for death because the plain ones hurt.

“So claimed means drowned,” he said. “Returned means funeral.”

“Usually. The wording changes from record to record, but that is what they mean here.”

“And sea-owed?”

Miriam reached for the small notebook Clara had brought. Its pages were crowded with names and dates, with short notes beside some of them.

“Someone who nearly drowns, or survives another danger at sea where drowning was likely, may be judged spared. After that, they carry an obligation to the people who brought them home.”

Severin thought of the injured man on the shore trying to get back to the ropes until Elspeth ordered him down. “What kind of duty?”

“Whatever they can reasonably give. A fit person answers rescue calls. Others might bring food, repair a boat, give money, or help a family after a drowning. Some make a personal offering after another close call or a piece of good fortune.”

“Elspeth is sea-owed?” Severin asked.

“Since she was young. She nearly drowned, and other islanders brought her home.”

“Who decides when they have paid enough?”

Miriam looked at him. “Paid?”

“You said continuing. How long?”

“Usually for life, if they remain able.”

“Same problem with better manners.” Severin nodded toward the book. “Someone survives once and the island gets their work forever?”

Armin glanced down at the record and wisely kept quiet.

Miriam did not seem offended. “There is no fixed payment. Some people resent the duty, while others give more than anyone asks because they feel guilty for living. People can use the obligation to ask too much of someone. We have those kinds of people here too, Mr. Hale, same as anywhere else.”

She put one finger beside a name. “This woman lost the use of one arm after her rescue, so she looked after the rescue stores instead of going out on boats. Another became too ill to work and gave nothing for six years. Nobody dragged him from bed.”

“So the sea does not collect.”

“People do, sometimes badly. The idea is that if others carried you home, you owe something back. What that means depends on what you can still do.”

Severin still did not like the thought of a debt that never ended.

Armin had been turning pages in the sea-owed book while they spoke. “Are all of these drownings?”

“No.”

He stopped turning the pages. “Then sea-owed is too broad for what we need. Can you tell which people were actually taken into the refuge?”

Miriam paused, then turned the book toward him. “Some. I’d need the rescue accounts to tell you how many.”

She rose before he could ask where they were. Two bundles came down from the shelf, then a third from the cabinet. Armin moved the tea aside and began making space.

For the next half hour they worked through the records one case at a time. One sea-owed entry matched a rescue account but never named the refuge, so Miriam set it aside. Another family notebook claimed a man had been dead for an hour before recovery. The contemporary boatman’s statement said only that he had stopped responding. That one went aside too.

They found a case old enough that the ink had faded to brown.

A fisherman had been pulled from rough water after his boat struck reef. One rescue account described him as barely breathing. Another said no one could tell whether he breathed at all. The storm had made transport across the island impossible, so the rescue crew took him below.

Leo asked how long he had stayed, and Miriam checked three pages before answering. “One says until morning. The family copy says two nights.”

“Which is better?”

“The first. It was written that week.”

The fisherman recovered enough to return home, but months later another family note described weakness and repeated falls. Before the year was out he had stopped working his boat, and his death appeared in the register.

“Cause?” Severin asked.

“Not recorded here.”

Leo read the final entry twice. “Any physician named?”

Miriam shook her head.

Leo turned back to the earlier entry. “Then we have a survival, followed by decline and death. Nothing here tells us the two are connected.”

Severin checked the date again. The entry predated Carrick by generations. Whatever Grayhook was dealing with, he had not brought the first of it there.

Miriam was already pulling another book toward her. “This one matters as well.”

The second case had also gone through the refuge after a wreck, and the records were cleaner. The man had been badly chilled and injured his shoulder, then spent one night below because the sea had closed the passage. He returned to work before the season ended. Severin waited for the decline, but no later note supplied one.

The man married, appeared repeatedly in rescue duty records, later paid for repairs to a widow’s roof, and died more than thirty years after the wreck.

“Ordinary death?” Leo asked.

“As far as the records say.”

Armin sat back. “So surviving the refuge tells us almost nothing by itself.”

“It tells you they survived the refuge,” Miriam said.

Severin looked at her. “You enjoy doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Taking away a useful conclusion just when we find one.”

“No. I’d rather leave a question open than claim the records prove something they don’t.”

Leo looked back to the records. “Did you oppose Carrick treating people in the refuge?”

Miriam’s hand stopped on the page. “No.”

“I opposed him when I thought someone was dead and he told me I was wrong,” she continued. “Sometimes he proved it. I have watched Owen get people breathing again when I thought they were beyond help. So I learned to listen.”

“And later?” Leo asked.

“Later, we started disagreeing about where saving someone ends.” Miriam’s hand rested beside the register. “If there is still a real chance, we should fight for it. I believe that. Owen believes it more fiercely than most. But being able to stop a body from changing tells you very little about whether the person can still be saved.”

“That sounds like Jonah,” Severin said.

“Partly. That is why people argue about him.”

Leo leaned forward. “What do you call him?”

Miriam was quiet for a moment. “Jonah Lennox. That is the only answer I can support.”

Carrick had found no detectable pulse or breath, and nobody knew exactly how long Jonah had been under. Yet the man Severin met remembered his family, complained about Carrick treating him like glass, and behaved like anyone else on the island.

Miriam turned one of the cups without drinking from it. “Some call him sea-owed. Some believe Owen brought back a man who had already been claimed. I record both. Neither tells me what actually happened to his body.”

Armin returned to the older rescue accounts and began arranging the cases by date.

Severin pulled one of the pages nearer. The final note read Home by first safe tide. Another ended Carried to the upper road when the weather eased.

He checked a third. The patient had died below, but the body had been removed the same day the passage opened.

Brought out before tide appeared on another account. Severin remembered seeing the same wording at Carrick’s practice.

He drew two more pages from Armin’s line. Removed to family house once wind fell. Taken home when passage cleared.

“They keep leaving,” he said.

Miriam looked across the records. “Of course.”

“Why?”

“Because it was a refuge.” Severin waited, and she continued. “People went below because staying outside could kill them. Once the weather eased enough to move them, survivors went home and the dead were taken out for return.”

“They did not keep the injured there because they seemed to recover better inside?” Leo asked.

“Not as a general practice.”

Armin ran a finger down the cases Severin had pulled out. “Carrick does.”

“He treats them there when moving someone badly injured would waste time or put them at greater risk.”

“And sometimes keeps them there after they can be moved safely,” Leo said.

Miriam nodded once.

Severin looked over the line of old accounts. People went into the refuge when the storm left no safer option, then came back out as soon as they could be moved. Carrick had found another use for the hours between.

Leo set his fingertip on the oldest account. “When did that change?”

Miriam looked at the records Armin had arranged.

“When Owen learned that leaving them inside gave him time to save them.”
