Litany of Winter

By the time Ruth finished bringing in the records, Carrick’s practice no longer looked like a place where anyone could be examined.

Ledgers covered the desk. Case folders had taken the chair Severin had moved against the wall. Loose sheets sat in shallow stacks along the side table, some clean and recent, others softened at the corners by years of handling. Ruth found two boards from somewhere in the back and laid them across a pair of stools to make another surface.

Severin stared at the room. When Leo had asked for every refuge case, he had pictured a pile, not furniture becoming part of the filing system.

Leo picked up the first ledger and turned it once in his hands. “We are not reading all of this the same way.”

Rafael was already opening his notebook.

“You take names and dates,” Leo told him. “Build the chronology and cross-reference anything that comes up twice.”

Rafael nodded.

“Armin, outcomes. Successes, failures, repeated problems, anything that turns up later.”

Armin pulled a chair closer with his boot. “That sounds pleasantly vague.”

“It is. Improve it.”

Armin gave him a small smile and sat.

Leo looked at Severin. “You get the summaries. What happened, how long they were in the refuge, when they were moved, anything about temperature. Flag anything you cannot place.”

Severin frowned. “I get the bits nobody bothered to name properly.”

“You’re good at finding those.”

That was either praise or an accusation. With Leo, Severin had stopped trying to tell the difference.

They began with the newest cases. For the first half hour, Carrick’s records made him look better.

A fisherman pulled from winter water had arrived barely responsive, with skin so cold Ruth had written that warming him too quickly made his pulse unstable. He spent several hours in the refuge while Carrick treated a broken wrist and watched his breathing. By morning he could answer questions, and three days later he was home.

Another file concerned a harbor worker with a crushed lower leg and enough blood loss that Carrick had twice warned against mainland transport. The refuge kept him stable while the bleeding was controlled. A deckhand struck by loose cargo during heavy weather stayed there overnight because evacuation was impossible, but Carrick’s notes recorded ordinary treatment throughout.

Severin paused over the final entry in that file: Discharged. Returned to family. There was no prayer in the margin or claim of a miracle. Carrick and Ruth had simply kept the man alive long enough for treatment to work.

Across the room, Rafael had already made three columns of names and dates. Armin was separating folders into stacks on the floor while Carrick moved between patients in the front room. Ruth came and went when somebody needed a word explained, then disappeared again to deal with whoever had entered the practice.

Other files ended badly. A woman with severe chest injuries remained stable until the second night, then died. A boy pulled from the rocks after a storm improved for two days before worsening at home; Carrick had written infection beside his name and nothing suggesting another cause.

Several patients improved enough to leave regular care and had no further entry unless something brought them back. Severin checked two names against Rafael’s list.

“So after they go home, that can be it?”

Rafael searched the ledger beside him. “Unless they return. I have nothing after that for either of these.”

“Give me those,” Armin said.

For the next several minutes he worked through the nearby files, moving some beside his knee and leaving others where they were. By the time Leo noticed, Armin had divided them into three uneven groups.

“What are you sorting?”

“Clean endings here. Deaths and transfers, plus anyone discharged with a final note.” Armin touched the second stack. “These stop when the patient leaves care unless they come back with another problem. The last group has some follow-up afterward.”

Leo crouched beside him. “And?”

“The repair is well recorded. What happens afterward is patchier.”

Carrick returned through the doorway in time to hear him.

“Railway inspections,” Armin said. “A wheel assembly can be repaired correctly and fail again six months later. If the maintenance book stops at the repair, you know the work was done. You do not know whether it held.”

Carrick did not bristle. “We do not bring people back for regular examinations. If someone feels well, they stop coming.”

Ruth, sorting loose sheets at the side table, added, “And if they live on the far side of the island, they may only come back when something is wrong.”

Armin nodded. “That makes sense. It still leaves the gap.”

“How many?” Leo asked.

“Enough that I would not use these records to tell you what refuge patients look like years later.”

The older folders had a different problem. Handwriting changed. Measurements disappeared, and some pages gave dates without times while describing the weather more carefully than the patient.

One entry said a man had been carried to the shelter. Another called the destination the refuge. Elsewhere Severin found taken below and, in a different hand, brought out before tide. He laid the pages together.

“Are these all the same place?”

Carrick came over to read them. “Mostly. Old writers did not always use the words the same way. But below, or the refuge without another location, usually means the same place.”

“How long has Grayhook been using it?”

“The island was using it before I began practicing. My records will not give you a clean answer beyond that.”

Leo looked up. “How far do your reliable medical records go?”

“My own records are systematic. Before that, I have copies from previous physicians and some rescue notes. The farther back you go, the less useful they are as medical records.”

Carrick took a narrow ledger with a cracked spine from the shelf and handed it to Rafael. Severin leaned close enough to read as Rafael turned the pages.

Recovered from refuge appeared beside two names, while another entry read Survived until morning. Farther in, the wording changed again: Sea-owed. A different hand had added claimed by the Keeper to another name.

Severin stopped on that one. “What does it mean?”

“It means you need Miriam Croft before you decide it means something terrible,” Carrick said.

“Convenient.”

“Annoyingly inconvenient, actually. Miriam will correct every word in your question before she answers it.”

Ruth said, “She will.”

Carrick tapped the ledger. “Those are Grayhook categories, religious and communal. They are not diagnoses, and I am not going to pretend I can translate every old entry for you.”

“You disagree with her?” Leo asked.

“Often. Usually usefully.” Carrick returned the ledger to Rafael. “I’ve convinced Miriam that people the old custom would have considered beyond help still had a medical chance. She’s caught family obligations or unreliable witness accounts that I would have missed. We’ve spent years correcting each other.”

Ruth set down the papers in her hands. “Her office keeps drowning and rescue records, witness statements, family accounts, sea-owed entries, and older material Owen never had reason to keep here.”

“How far back?” Leo asked.

“Farther than these ledgers can tell you.”

Leo looked once at Armin’s divided stacks. “Rafael, stay here. Finish the case list with Ruth and Carrick. I want the cleanest comparison you can build.”

Rafael pulled the nearest stack toward him. “All right.”

“Armin. Severin. With me.”

They left Carrick’s practice with the light already thinning over Grayhook. The wind had strengthened while they were inside, carrying salt and the smell of wet rope between the houses. Severin had spent long enough bent over paper that walking felt like being let out of a box.

Armin rubbed a smear of ink from his thumb as they went.

“You looked happy in there,” Severin said.

“I like records.”

“You need better hobbies.”

Armin laughed once. “Give me time.”

Near the turn above the harbor, a public board had been fixed beneath a shallow wooden cover. Severin had passed it earlier without reading it. Now he noticed the names and boat assignments, with a separate column headed RESCUE DUTY. Several names appeared more than once.

There was nothing devotional on the board. Grayhook’s strange words had sounded different inside Carrick’s ledger. Out here they belonged among ropes, weather notices, and people who had to decide who went into bad water when somebody else failed to come home.

Miriam Croft lived farther uphill in a narrow stone house facing the sea. The woman who answered Leo’s knock was small and dressed in dark wool, with iron-gray hair pinned back from a weathered face. Her attention moved across the three of them with quick precision.

“Miriam Croft?” Leo asked.

“Yes.”

“Doctor Carrick sent us. He said you are the Tide-Seer.”

“I am.”

She let them in.

Shelves filled one wall. Bundles of paper sat beneath the window, and a writing case lay open near a lamp. Two pens rested beside a small knife and the sand dish used for drying ink. Miriam’s fingers were stained around the nails.

Leo remained standing. “We need your oldest records of people believed dead before they were taken into the refuge.”

Miriam closed the writing case and set it aside. “No. You need to decide what you mean by dead before I give you anything.”

Severin felt irritation rise, but Leo only asked, “What distinction are you making?”

“A witness saying someone was dead is not the same as a physician establishing it. Neither tells you what people later decided the event meant.” Miriam folded her hands over the closed case. “Owen records treatment; I record what was witnessed and what obligations followed. I also keep what Grayhook decided had to be remembered.”

Armin glanced toward the shelves. “So the refuge only appears when it matters to the account.”

“Yes.”

Leo said, “Then show us the oldest refuge cases where someone was thought beyond saving and later survived.”

Miriam considered the wording for a moment. “Better.”

She crossed to the shelves, passed the books nearest the lamp, and unlocked the lowest cabinet. From it she drew a broad register wrapped in faded cloth, then a second with leather cracked pale along the spine.

Leo watched her set them on the table. “How far back does that pattern go?”

Miriam opened the older register and ran one ink-marked finger down the first page.

“The first case I can support is from several generations before Owen was born.”
