Litany of Winter

The lane from the Lennox house ran downhill toward the middle of Grayhook, where the stone houses crowded closer together and the wind lost some of its force. Leo did not ask Jonah another question before they left. Rafael kept his notebook closed.

Severin understood why. Whatever had happened between the sea and Carrick’s ceiling, Jonah had already given them every memory he had.

Carrick’s practice occupied the ground floor of a narrow house with two front windows gone cloudy from salt. A brass plate beside the door had been polished more recently than the hinges. Inside, the first room smelled of soap and boiled linen, with something sharp enough to sting the back of Severin’s nose.

A man sat on the edge of a treatment table with his sleeve rolled above the elbow. Blood had soaked through a folded cloth around his forearm. The woman standing over him had pinned her brown hair tightly back and rolled her own sleeves back above the wrists.

”You said the hook slipped,” she said.

”It did.”

”And then?”

”That was it.”

She unwound the cloth. ”Tom.”

The patient looked toward the door, apparently hoping the arrival of four strangers might save him, but none of them moved.

The woman pressed two fingers farther up his arm. ”And then?”

”I pulled it out.”

”After you fell against the rail.”

Tom sighed. ”After I fell against the rail.”

”There we are.”

She cleaned the cut while he complained about missing the afternoon tide. Her hands moved quickly without hurrying. She checked that he could move his fingers and asked whether any felt numb before closing the wound.

Severin looked around while she worked. The room was clean, but nothing about it was generous. Shelves held brown bottles, folded bandages, jars, splints, and instruments in fitted cases. Several gaps showed on the medicine shelves. A crate near the back wall still carried a mainland shipping stamp.

The woman finished the dressing and tied it off.

”You stay off the boat today.”

Tom stared at her.

”That was not a question.”

”I can still use the hand.”

”And if the wound opens and you fill it with fish water, Dr. Carrick gets to cut away whatever goes bad. You can explain to him why.”

”That seems excessive.”

”So does losing part of your arm because you wanted one afternoon’s catch.”

A voice from the doorway behind her said, ”Ruth is being kind.”

The man who entered was shorter than Leo and lean, with the beginnings of a stoop through the shoulders. Gray had spread heavily through dark hair at his temples. A neat beard covered his jaw, and wire-frame spectacles rested on a narrow face that looked more tired than severe.

Tom pointed at Ruth. ”She threatened my arm.”

”I heard.”

”Are you going to do anything?”

Dr. Owen Carrick looked at the bandage. ”Did she say you could work?”

”No.”

”Then I’m going to advise you not to annoy the person who stitched you.”

Ruth began clearing the instruments. Carrick did not inspect her work or ask to see the wound again.

Tom muttered something about tyranny, took his coat, and left.

Ruth looked at the four men by the door. Armin had joined them outside after arranging their quarters and sorting the equipment and maps they had brought ashore. He carried one of the island maps folded under his arm.

”You’re the Crown party,” Ruth said.

Leo nodded. ”Leo Benitez. Rafael Montoro. Severin Hale. Armin Brandt.”

”Owen Carrick,” the doctor said. ”I assumed Elspeth would send you after you spoke to Jonah.”

”Jonah pointed us your way,” Leo said.

That seemed to please Carrick more than Severin expected. ”Good.”

He led them into a smaller room crowded with a desk, two chairs, a cabinet, and stacks of paper that had spread onto a side table. Leo remained standing.

”Was Jonah Lennox dead when he was brought to you?”

Carrick took off his spectacles.

”I don’t know.”

The answer caught Severin off guard.

Carrick put the spectacles back on. ”I know what people here say, and I understand why. Jonah showed no breathing I could detect. I could find no pulse. He had been in cold water for an unknown length of time, and the men who recovered him believed he had been under far too long.”

”But you won’t call him dead,” Rafael said.

”I’ll say I could find no signs of life with the means I had. That is not quite the same thing.”

Rafael opened his notebook.

Carrick continued. ”If you’re asking whether I believed he was going to survive, no. I did not.”

”Why take him to the refuge?” Leo asked.

”Because I had seen it slow decline in other patients. At that point, I thought there was nothing left to lose by buying more time.”

”His family might disagree with that phrasing,” Leo said.

Carrick nodded. ”They would be right to.”

He opened a drawer and removed a thick case folder tied with faded cord. Jonah Lennox’s name was written across the front.

Rafael stepped to the desk as soon as Carrick set the folder down.

The first notes had been written in a tighter hand than the later ones. Rafael read silently for a while, then put one finger beneath a line.

”This says ’pulse not found.’”

”Yes.”

”Not ’no pulse.’”

Carrick looked at the page. ”Because I couldn’t prove there was no pulse.”

Severin leaned against the wall. He could read the words from where he stood, but the measurements and abbreviated medical notes lost him quickly. Rafael did not have that problem.

Rafael traced the treatment sequence with one finger, stopping to ask about continued resuscitation, warming, and the injuries from the damaged gear. Carrick answered as he went.

”The bleeding was minor compared with the drowning. He had cuts from the gear and a badly injured shoulder, but neither should have killed him.”

Rafael turned another page. The notes followed Jonah hour by hour at first, then day by day.

Breathing returned first. Conscious response took longer, and strength came back more slowly still.

Carrick tapped one date. ”That was when I first saw a meaningful response.”

Ruth came in carrying a tray of clean glassware. She glanced at the page.

”Purposeful response was later.”

Carrick looked at her.

”Late the first night he pulled away from pressure,” Ruth said. ”Second day he did what you asked. Not before.”

Carrick thought back, then nodded. ”You’re right.”

Rafael changed the note he had just made.

Severin looked again at Jonah’s pages. ”So the refuge didn’t fix him.”

Carrick turned toward him.

”You kept working,” Severin said. ”He didn’t wake up until later. His shoulder still had to heal. Whatever was wrong still had to be treated.”

”Yes.”

”Then what changes while someone’s inside?”

”That’s what I’ve been trying to answer for years.”

Leo pulled out the second chair and sat.

Carrick spoke more slowly now. ”The refuge does not close a serious wound or set a fracture. It cannot replace lost blood. If tissue has died or is too badly damaged to save, I still have to remove it. Ruth and I still have to do the work.”

”Then what does it do?” Severin asked.

”In some patients, deterioration slows.”

The room had gone quiet enough that Severin could hear someone pass in the lane outside.

Carrick continued. ”A badly chilled patient may lose heat more slowly than I would expect. Bleeding sometimes slows. A patient who should be worsening quickly may remain stable long enough for us to keep treating them.”

”You’re saying it keeps them alive,” Armin said.

”I’m saying it gives me time.”

Severin knew what could be done with time. A few seconds could turn a bad street fight into one you walked away from. A few minutes could get a bleeding man to someone who knew what to do with him.

Carrick had spent years trying to buy his patients more time. Severin went back to one part of the answer.

”Temperature.”

Carrick nodded. ”Often. Not always.”

”Jonah?”

”Cold enough that I expected the cold itself to finish what the water had started. Inside the refuge, he stopped losing heat as quickly.”

Cold and heat caught Severin’s attention differently now, but he said nothing.

Leo turned back to Carrick. ”You’ve seen this in other people.”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

Carrick looked toward the shelves beyond the open door.

”Enough that I stopped treating it as coincidence.”

Ruth said, ”That answer makes it sound as though we’ve been putting healthy people in there to see what happens.”

”We have not,” Carrick said.

She looked at Leo. ”Every case was someone who needed treatment anyway. Storm injuries, exposure, falls, boat accidents. We would have been treating them whether the refuge existed or not.”

Carrick nodded. ”I started keeping closer notes because people were surviving things I had learned not to expect them to survive.”

”And you don’t know why,” Leo said.

”No.”

”Any theory?”

”Several. None I would ask you to trust.”

So far, Carrick had kept every answer to what he could actually support.

Leo closed Jonah’s folder. ”For now, I’m satisfied that nobody has shown me proof Jonah was irreversibly dead. I’m also satisfied that you treated him rather than simply leaving him in the refuge and waiting for a miracle.”

”I dislike the word. It makes the work disappear.”

Leo continued. ”It also sounds as though the refuge preserves a chance to treat people rather than healing them itself.”

”That’s closer to what I’ve observed.”

”And nothing we’ve seen so far tells me Grayhook’s religion caused it.”

Carrick said, ”I never said it did.”

”No. You didn’t.”

Leo pushed the folder back across the desk. ”I want the other cases.”

Carrick looked toward the shelves.

”All of them?”

”Every patient you’ve treated using the refuge.”

”That covers years. Some of those files concern people who are still alive, and not all of them will appreciate strangers reading what’s in them.”

”We’ll keep personal details restricted where they aren’t relevant. But if Jonah is not the first case, I need comparison, not another story.”

Carrick looked toward Ruth. She was already looking toward the shelves.

After a moment, Carrick said, ”All right.”

Ruth disappeared through the back doorway.

Rafael gathered Jonah’s record and his notebook from the middle of the desk. Severin took the remaining chair and put it against the wall. Armin stepped aside to clear the doorway.

Ruth returned carrying two thick ledgers against her chest, set them beside Rafael, and went back for more.

The next stack included loose case folders tied with cord and a book swollen from damp along one edge. Rafael cleared the side table before Ruth returned with another bundle.

Severin looked at Carrick. ”All of those?”

Carrick watched Ruth lay another bundle beside the others.

”Those are the refuge cases we can start with.”

Leo glanced at the growing pile. ”And Jonah?”

”Jonah is only the most dramatic.”
