The City’s Strongest Son-in-law

Chapter 1005: Chapter 1004: Giving Face

The Hundred Day Banquet is generally announced by Su Changfeng at twelve noon, and only after the firecrackers are lit does it officially start. However, by eight or nine in the morning, quite a few people had already begun to head to the Hilton Hotel.

If, at this moment, a bomb suddenly went off, all the prominent figures in Jiang City would meet their end at the Hilton Hotel.

”Grandpa, I originally thought that our arrival today was already considered early, but now it seems that we were quite late,” said Gu Qing’er, with a hint of surprise, as she supported Gu Changsheng’s hand.

The Gu Family had planned to arrive at the Hilton Hotel by ten in the morning. Gu Qing’er thought that since the official start was at twelve, arriving two hours early should be considered quite early. However, by the time they arrived, there wasn’t a single empty parking space in the vast lot.

Gu Changsheng squinted and smiled. These were all Jiang City’s big shots, who usually arrived last to showcase their status. But at today’s event, how could they still dare to play with such status?

”Your brother’s face is something they definitely want to respect; it’s normal for them to come early,” said Gu Changsheng calmly.

Gu Qing’er nodded with a smile, and said to Gu Changsheng, ”I feel the same way. Nowadays, in Jiang City, if my brother claims to be second, who would dare claim to be first? I guess in my brother’s eyes, these people are just some folks with a little bit of money.”

Gu Changsheng laughed brightly at Gu Qing’er’s words. Only his granddaughter dared to speak this way. These people here were the top big shots in Jiang City; even pulling one out at random would have assets worth at least billions, yet his granddaughter referred to them as people with a little bit of money.

”Although what you said is exaggerated, I do think for Changfeng, they indeed are not worth mentioning.” Gu Changsheng said plainly.

Gu Changsheng wasn’t aware of the Shangguan Family’s prowess, nor did he know Su Changfeng would soon become the head of the Shangguan Family. If he knew, he would not find Gu Qing’er’s words exaggerated and calling them people with a little money would already be showing them great courtesy.

Even if they added all the money of those present today together, it probably wouldn’t even come close to one small fraction of the Shangguan Family’s wealth; in front of the Shangguan Family, they truly are a bunch of paupers.

”Old Gu, why did you come only now!” An elder, looking very surprised, walked up to Gu Changsheng, wearing glasses and wrapped in a gray wool scarf, exuding an elegant demeanor.

”We thought we were quite early, but upon arrival found you guys already so eager and arriving early. Old Liu, do you remember what I told you back then?” Gu Changsheng squinted and said.

This elder with glasses was named Liu Chen, the president of the Jiang City Association. He was quite lucky now that he hadn’t sought trouble with Su Changfeng, otherwise, he’d be suffering now.

Within the association, quite a few people had mocked Su Changfeng before, even opposed him directly and suppressed him everywhere. These people now regretted their actions deeply.

At the time, these people never anticipated that Su Changfeng would accomplish what he has today. There were even several who had withdrawn from the association and now absolutely begged him to let them rejoin, hoping to see Su Changfeng once through the association for his forgiveness.

”You old guy, you never come to the temple without reason, what do you need help with, just tell me directly.” Gu Changsheng straightforwardly said to Liu Chen.

Liu Chen nodded awkwardly and smiled, saying, ”There’s truly nothing one can hide from your eyes. The main thing is that a few people in the association had offended Su Changfeng before, and now they all regret it, hoping for a chance to seek his forgiveness. My voice doesn’t carry any weight, and I find it hard to even meet him, so I thought of asking you to step in.”

”Your voice doesn’t carry weight, do you think I can make a difference by stepping in?” Gu Changsheng said. Even though his relationship with Su Changfeng was more amicable than most, this very reason made Gu Changsheng reluctant to involve himself in these matters.

After all, this issue was thankless and would incur a favor owed to Su Changfeng, and such favors always have to be repaid. Right now, he did not want to expend any goodwill he had with Su Changfeng for unrelated parties.

Liu Chen felt very awkward. He understood perfectly that Gu Changsheng’s words clearly indicated he did not want to help. However, if even Gu Changsheng didn’t have the face to do this in vast Jiang City, then who else would?

”Old Gu, for the sake of our friendship, please help me just this once,” said Liu Chen.

Gu Changsheng shook his head, not wishing to discuss further, and said lightly, ”Liu Chen, but I truly am powerless. Although my relationship with Su Changfeng is good, I have the Gu Family to consider too.”

”Although that’s true, now that Qingqing is Su Changfeng’s sister, doesn’t that mean we’re even more closely related?” Liu Chen persuaded.

”Grandpa Liu, you are somewhat wrong there. Even though I’m Brother Changfeng’s sister, what does that have to do with the Gu Family? More importantly, who asked those people to look down on my brother before? Now that my brother is successful, they’re turning back to ask for forgiveness, isn’t that too inappropriate?” Gu Qing’er, with nothing to fear, spoke like a machine gun, laying out numerous arguments.

Moreover, Gu Qing’er inwardly didn’t wish to forgive these people; it served them right for causing trouble for Su Changfeng back then—self-inflicted!

”Alas! What to do now!” exclaimed Liu Chen with a sigh. Initially, he thought to use today’s Hundred Day Banquet as an opportunity to have Su Changfeng forgive those who offended him, but with Gu Changsheng unwilling to speak for them, there seemed to be no turning point now.

”Liu Chen, I don’t think you need to be so disheartened. From my understanding of Su Changfeng, he wouldn’t care about these things, nor is it likely he’ll go out of his way to trouble those people unless they cross his bottom line.” Gu Changsheng consoled him.

Though Gu Changsheng couldn’t assist, he and Liu Chen had been friends for many years. He still wished to share his heartfelt words. In his view, so much time had passed already, and Su Changfeng, a magnanimous person, shouldn’t mention these things anymore. More importantly, the source of those past issues had been sorted out, and the revenge which needed to be exacted had already been exacted by Su Changfeng.

”Old Gu, do you really mean it? You’re not joking with me, are you?” Liu Chen asked in disbelief.

Gu Changsheng solemnly nodded and, with a serious expression, said, ”Changfeng is broad-minded; he doesn’t care about those people at all, nor does he bother with past matters—they likely don’t weigh on his mind.”

”I hope you’re right.” Liu Chen sighed.
