My Youth Began With Him

“Mom is also a doctor; a doctor’s mission is saving lives.”

“But, Mom, you’re pregnant with our little brother or sister…” Pudding interrupted.

“Um…”

“Sis, you are finally on my side…”

With her elder sister helping her, Little Bean became smug.

“Don’t act like this, okay? You must understand that this is Mom’s job.” Huo Mian tried to reason with the twins.

“But Dad said you mustn’t leave Dad’s side when you’re on vacation, or you can stay home with us,” Pudding lectured her mom.

“I know.” Huo Mian was helpless.

“So, will you take Dad to the hospital or will you take us and the bodyguards?”

“I… I’ll take the bodyguards. Don’t worry and wait for me at home. It seems to be raining and it is quite cold.”

“When will you come home?” Little Bean said with a pout, reluctant to see her go.

“It won’t be long,” Huo Mian soothed them.

“Liar. A cardiological operation takes at least three hours.” Pudding saw through her mom’s white lie immediately.

“Um…”

It wasn’t easy to live with smart and cute children; they were hard to lie to.

“Mom. Don’t go… There are so many doctors in the hospital. If they can’t do it, it means they are not competent and it’s not your fault. Lately, things are creepily quiet. The bit*h Zhang Manlin hasn’t made a move and we don’t know if she’s up to something. Besides, the crazy woman Huo Yanyan might turn her attention to us after slandering Uncle Gao. So, I think you’d better stay put.”

Pudding expressed herself with clear logic and precise words.

“Pudding, I understand your concern. But I can’t miss a chance to save people. I’m not Virgin Mary or God, but I’m a doctor whose responsibility is saving people’s lives. If I tried and people still died, it wouldn’t be my fault. But if I didn’t try and people died because of it, I would be very sad, as would their relatives. In this world, the cruelest thing is parting with one’s beloved ones. Living people would feel dejected… I hope I can do my best to help all the patients under my care so long as there’s the slimmest hope to save them. These are the first words I told myself when I entered medical school.”

When Huo Mian said these words, her eyes brightened as if she had returned to the time when she was in school.

She had entered the school with excitement and a dream that looked dumb in other people’s eyes.

Everyone took it for granted that doctors should save people’s lives; it was their job, and they must do the work for the salary they took.

Lately, the media had instigated the public’s hatred and distrust toward doctors, making the profession of doctors lose much of its previous glory.

However, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the young people who dreamed to be doctors; they worked hard for their careers despite all the difficulties.

Even though she was now the deputy director, Huo Mian still thought it was her responsibility to save lives.

“Mom… Okay, you win. You have a high EQ and are eloquent… We have to surrender to you.” Huo Mian’s sincere words finally convinced her daughters. Finally, Pudding admitted defeat.

Watching Huo Mian leave home with the bodyguards, Pudding still felt uneasy.

“Sis, what’s wrong with you? Something’s on your mind…” Little Bean asked.

“I still feel Mom shouldn’t go out tonight,” Pudding answered with fear in her heart.

“Yeah. She didn’t consult with Dad before she went out… I have a bad feeling about it, too,” Little Bean said.
