I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Meeting the Right Person at the Right Time

When Jiang He returned to his dorm, he was feeling a bit dizzy. He was a lightweight when it came to drinking.

He pushed open the door and walked out onto the balcony.

The chill in the late autumn night air finally cleared his head a bit.

He rested his hands on the rusty iron railing, his gaze following a bicycle passing by below.

He saw that the lights in the neighboring men’s dorm were still on, and he could even hear someone shouting:

”Hao Fang disconnected again.”

”Pull the mobs! Pull the mobs!”

He let out a heavy breath.

Jiang He realized he missed his wife.

The alcohol was like a catalyst, magnifying his everyday emotions.

Right now, he desperately missed his wife, desperately wanted to see her, and desperately wanted to call her.

The longing was so strong it made his chest feel tight, and even touching his ring brought no relief.

He stood there in silence, his mind beginning to uncontrollably analyze their current relationship.

’No matter how I look at it, our relationship should be pretty good by now, right?’

Ever since the trip to the Capital City, they had stayed in touch every day.

Teacher Shen would proactively tell him about her day, every day.

What she ate, what she planned to do the next day—she would share it all with him, down to the smallest detail.

When she shared these daily snippets, she always sprinkled in little emojis. Jiang He could feel the subtle flirtatiousness between the lines, even with his eyes closed.

’I’m not just being baselessly overconfident, am I?’

He hesitated for a moment before finally sending Shen Yu a message:

[Teacher Shen, are you asleep yet?]

Jiang He clutched his phone, his heart inexplicably picking up its pace.

He assumed that, given Shen Yu’s schedule, she might already be asleep, or at least that it would take her a while to reply.

As it turned out...

Shen Yu replied in a second: [Nope, what’s up? Dr. Jiang.]

After a moment’s thought, Jiang He typed a line: [What are you up to? Is it a good time to call?]

About ten seconds later, his screen lit up.

[Sure, go ahead.]

Jiang He dialed her number.

”Hello.” The call connected, and Jiang He was the first to speak.

After a two-second pause, Shen Yu’s very prim and proper voice came through. ”Hello, good evening.”

Hearing the deliberate formality in his wife’s voice, the corners of Jiang He’s mouth lifted into a gentle smile he wasn’t even aware of.

In turn, his own voice softened considerably.

”What are you up to right now?” he asked softly.

Shen Yu answered, ”Oh, I just finished my shower. I was about to go to... Oh! No, no, I’m still wide awake.”

Listening to Shen Yu’s brain trip over itself, Jiang He instantly understood what was happening.

’This wasn’t a private call with my wife at all.’

In her dorm room at North Normal University, Shen Yu was definitely surrounded by her three advisors:

the hopeless romantic Liu Xiaotian, the scholarly analyst Yan Tong, and the health supervisor Xu Juan.

Shen Yu’s ten-second delayed reply just now, plus this incredibly unnatural dialogue, had to be the work of her advisors coaching her from the sidelines.

At this thought, Jiang He couldn’t help but shake his head and joke, ”Where’s Juanzi? Put Juanzi on the phone.”

The other end of the line suddenly fell silent for a second, followed by a rustling commotion. He could faintly hear hushed pushing and muttering.

Then.

”Tsk.”

An extremely impatient click of the tongue came from the earpiece, followed by Xu Juan’s voice. ”What do you want?”

Jiang He asked casually, ”Nothing, just wanted to ask how things are going with Chen Hao. Are you interested in him?”

Xu Juan scoffed on the other end and grumbled, ”Not really. He seems a little full of himself. Every day he’s telling me how amazing that paper you guys are working on is. You should really do something about him. I’m sick of hearing it.”

Jiang He froze when he heard this.

In his past life, Chen Hao and Xu Juan’s first meeting had gone smoothly. They had quickly fallen for each other and eventually gotten married.

He had thought that just by getting them to meet earlier, their fated romance would naturally blossom.

He never expected that having them meet early in this life would have the opposite effect.

But as Jiang He stood on the balcony and thought it through, he realized the outcome was actually quite logical.

The Chen Hao of today was just a college junior. Although his family was well-off, he was still quite immature when it came to relationships and social graces.

His method of pursuing girls was simply to show off his own skills and achievements.

Too much of that kind of showing off would, indeed, annoy a girl.

It just proved the old saying: you have to meet the right person at the right time.

Otherwise, even a love fated in a past life might not go the distance if the meeting happens too soon.

A wave of panic washed over Jiang He at this realization.

’The right person at the right time...’

’Because of my rebirth, Teacher Shen and I also met ahead of schedule. Could that also produce some uncontrollable butterfly effect?’

’In his past life, the Shen Yu who fell in love with him and stayed by his side was more mature.’

’But the Shen Yu of now is only nineteen, just a sophomore in college.’

’Could her feelings for me be built on admiration, and on the care I showed her in the Capital City?’

’If I try to rush this relationship, will I end up destroying the feelings that were supposed to grow naturally?’

This thought quickly took over Jiang He’s mind.

The impulse deep inside him, the urge to use his liquid courage to confess his feelings, was forcefully suppressed.

Jiang He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and forced his voice to sound calm and restrained.

”Okay, well, if that’s all, I’m going to hang up. Bye, Teacher Shen.”

He said it crisply, and was already starting to pull the phone away from his ear.

Just then.

”Wait!”

Shen Yu called out, stopping him.

Immediately after, Jiang He heard a flurry of noise on the other end of the line.

There was the sound of someone climbing down a metal-frame bed, Shen Yu’s hushed voice shooing her roommates away, and then the sound of the dorm door being pushed open and slammed shut.

Then, the WHOOSH of wind came through the earpiece.

Clearly, Shen Yu had grabbed her phone and left the dorm room.

Shen Yu caught her breath on the other end, then asked, ”Dr. Jiang, have you been drinking?”

Jiang He: ”?”

’Did his wife install a camera in his dorm?’

Before he could figure it out, Shen Yu went ”Hmph, hmph,” on the other end.

”I could tell you were drinking just from the sound of your voice. Did you drink a lot? Are you feeling awful?”

’His wife was worried about him!’

Jiang He couldn’t help but let out a goofy laugh before quickly reining it in.

For some reason, he suddenly felt the urge to play up being drunk.

He lowered his voice and said, ”Actually... I am a little drunk. And I feel pretty awful.”

Sure enough.

Hearing him say that, Shen Yu immediately grew anxious on the other end.

”Jeez, then you shouldn’t have drunk so much!”

From the sound of it, she seemed so frustrated she was stomping her foot.

Hearing this, Jiang He could no longer suppress his smile. He simply buried his face in the crook of his arm and said softly:

”But I already drank it. I feel awful. What am I supposed to do?”

Shen Yu was exasperated by his feigned helplessness, but her voice was so full of concern she couldn’t actually be angry:

”What else can you do? Get back inside and drink some hot water! Do you hear me? And next time, you are absolutely forbidden from drinking so much!”

”Oh, okay.”

Jiang He replied obediently.

He took his phone, turned back into his dorm room, pulled out a ”Double Happiness” brand enamel mug, and poured half a cup of plain water from a green thermos.

”I drank it. Now what?”

On the other end of the line, Shen Yu seemed to be confirming that he had really done as he was told, and only then did she let out a long sigh of relief.

Her voice sounded exceptionally gentle in the night wind, as if she were coaxing a naughty child.

”Now, take off your shoes, get into bed, pull the covers up tight so you don’t get cold, and put your phone next to your pillow.”

Jiang He followed her instructions, taking off his shoes, lifting the covers, and climbing into bed.

”Covers on. Phone’s next to me,” Jiang He said.

”Mhm,” Shen Yu replied, satisfied.

”Close your eyes,” she said. ”I’ll talk with you until you fall asleep.”
