I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 61: Chapter 61: I Need Helpers

Chen Hao called out, ”Old Jiang! Turn around!”

Jiang He turned around and saw Chen Hao running out from a side passage near the main entrance of the Skill Center.

Chen Hao ran up to him and immediately asked, ”How’d it go? Old Jiang, how was the exam?”

Jiang He answered, ”No problem.”

Chen Hao gave him a thumbs-up. ”Awesome.”

After saying that, he took out his phone and opened QQ, apparently wanting to post something in the class group chat right away.

But he suddenly stopped.

After a moment of thought, he put his phone back in his pocket.

Chen Hao said, ”Get rich in silence! Uh, how does that saying go again... ’Success is ensured by secrecy, failure is caused by leaks,’ right?”

Jiang He praised him, ”Not bad. You’ve matured.”

Chen Hao was a little embarrassed by the praise and chuckled. ”Well, I hang out with you every day. I’m bound to learn something good from you, right? You were so calm even when you met the Director of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Me being all loud and antsy here makes me look like I’ve never seen the world.”

Jiang He nodded and smiled. ”Keep learning.”

The two of them walked side-by-side toward the dorms.

Chen Hao said, ”Actually, after you turned in your exam earlier, everyone in our class was really curious. You submitted your paper so quickly and finished the practical part so fast, they all wanted to know how you actually did.”

”And?” Jiang He asked.

”Everyone wanted to ask you in person, but the class monitor said, ’None of you should go ask Jiang He right now. Asking at a time like this would just put unnecessary pressure on him, right? We’ll know if he did well or not when the results come out. It’s only a couple of days away.’”

Chen Hao asked, ”And just as Zhou Yang finished saying that, guess what happened?”

Jiang He turned to look at Chen Hao.

They looked at each other and, with perfect tacit understanding, said two words:

”So true.”

After saying it, they both laughed out loud at the same time.

...

「Back at the dorm.」

Wang Bo and Li Zijian were sitting at their respective desks.

The two of them were from Class 3 and had a scheduled evening self-study session tonight, so they hadn’t gone to the Skill Center to watch the competition. They had just gotten back to the dorm not long ago.

Hearing the door open, they both turned around.

”You’re back?” Wang Bo asked. ”How’d it go, Old Jiang?”

Jiang He said, ”There shouldn’t be any problems.”

Chen Hao closed the door behind him, pulled over a chair, and straddled it. ”What do you mean ’shouldn’t be any problems’? Old Jiang’s performance was as smooth as flowing water. The fifth-year senior next to him was completely stunned.”

After hearing this, Wang Bo exclaimed in admiration, ”Holy crap... If you really get a good score in the second round this time, Old Jiang... what would happen? I can’t even imagine.”

Li Zijian added, ”Yeah, yeah, and that paper we worked on before, who knows when it’ll get published? I really hope it gets published soon.”

At this point, Li Zijian sighed.

”If that paper really gets published, with our names on it thanks to Old Jiang... do you think Han Tiantian would forgive me? Maybe she’d see that I’m actually an ambitious person, not some useless bum who just plays games at internet cafes all day?”

Jiang He asked, ”You still haven’t made up with her?”

Li Zijian gave a bitter smile and shook his head. ”Nope. She’s still ignoring me. I’m worried sick. She doesn’t reply to my texts, doesn’t answer my calls. During the long National Day holiday, I had no idea what she was doing, where she went, or who she was with... I feel like... we might really be over for good this time.”

Chen Hao and Wang Bo exchanged a look but didn’t say anything.

Jiang He, however, stated the facts. ”If that’s the case, then stop harassing her. Leave yourself some dignity. Know when to hold on and when to let go.”

”Know when to hold on and when to let go?”

Li Zijian retorted, ”Easy for you to say, Old Jiang. Let me ask you, if you broke up with your ’little girlfriend’ from up north, could you be this calm? Could you just say ’know when to hold on and when to let go’?”

Jiang He didn’t hesitate. ”I won’t break up with her.”

Li Zijian wasn’t buying it. ”A lot of things aren’t up to us! A relationship is a two-person thing. Even if you like her that much, even if you’re so good to her, what if she has a change of heart? What if she meets someone better than you and just doesn’t want to be with you anymore? What would you do then?”

Jiang He had never considered that Teacher Shen might not want to be with him anymore.

If a situation like that really did occur, after thinking it over and over, he could only come to one conclusion.

”She probably found out she has a terminal illness and doesn’t want to be a burden to me.”

Li Zijian was speechless. ”Holy crap... What is this, some kind of soap opera plot? Old Jiang, are you really that confident in your relationship?”

Jiang He nodded. ”Not only am I confident, but I also won’t let a situation like the one you described happen.”

”Sigh, I need to learn from you,” Li Zijian said. ”I wish I had your mindset.”

Jiang He said, ”The first thing you need to learn is to not fool around and be devoted. Otherwise, you can’t blame the girl for wanting to break up with you.”

Li Zijian scratched his head and gave an embarrassed laugh. ”Haha, yeah...”

”By the way,” Jiang He changed the subject, ”the paper from the medical record review is done. Now, I have a new project.”

Hearing the words ”new project,” Chen Hao, Wang Bo, and Li Zijian’s attention was instantly captured.

”What new project?” Chen Hao asked.

Jiang He mentally reviewed the technical approach, then explained it in the simplest terms possible:

”This project is about the early screening of pancreatic cancer.”

”You can think of pancreatic cancer as an extremely cunning criminal. Right now, in a clinical setting, we mostly detect pancreatic cancer using CT scans or B-scans. But that’s like only noticing the criminal after they’ve already blown up half the building. By the time we try to catch them, it’s often too late. There’s no saving the patient.”

The three roommates wore identical expressions of intense focus.

Jiang He continued, ”What I want to do next is to develop an early screening method. Before that building gets blown up, we find traces of the criminals in the patient’s blood. If we can do that, we could save countless lives.”

Chen Hao’s eyes lit up. ”That sounds fucking incredible! But Old Jiang, what exactly will we be doing?”

Jiang He said, ”That’s the problem. This time, it’s not like going to the records room to copy medical charts. We’ll have to go into a lab and do actual basic wet lab experiments. This is going to be an extremely tough battle.”

”It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call this work torture. Failure will be the norm. We might work for a whole month straight and end up with nothing but a pile of useless data. You won’t see any sense of accomplishment for a long time.”

A brief silence fell over the dorm room.

Jiang He looked at them calmly and posed the final question:

”So, I need help. You three, do you want in?”

The moment he finished speaking.

There was no hesitation, not even the need to exchange a look.

WHOOSH! WHOOSH! WHOOSH!

Chen Hao, Wang Bo, and Li Zijian—all three raised their right hands in unison.

”We’re in!”
