I Am Diagnosed as a Medical Titan

Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The Wind Is Rising, Buying a Padded Coat for Teacher Shen

The next morning, a wind swept through the Southern Medical University campus.

Jiang He thought, ’Since the temperature has dropped in Southern China, it must be getting pretty cold over where Shen Yu is.’

In his past life, whenever the weather turned cold, Teacher Shen would make him soup and buy him thick clothes, saying, ”Whatever other men have, my husband must have too.”

Jiang He hadn’t understood back then, thinking it was all pointless.

But now, his perspective had changed. It was incredibly meaningful.

’—Whatever other women have, my wife must have too.’

He rolled out of bed, turned on Chen Hao’s computer, connected to the broadband, and clicked the Taobao icon on the desktop.

E-commerce in ’08 had no algorithmic recommendations and no livestream shopping, only simple, unadorned shelf-style searching...

Jiang He typed into the search bar: ”women’s mid-length down jacket.”

The aesthetic at the time was still stuck in that slightly exaggerated phase.

Most of the models had heavy bangs and were striking strange poses...

Jiang He patiently flipped through a few pages before his eyes landed on a long, off-white down jacket.

The style was simple, with a cinched waist and a fur-lined collar that looked incredibly warm.

Price: 388 yuan.

He then checked the size chart.

’Shen Yu is about 5’5”, and she keeps her weight around 105 pounds. A size M should be perfect, with enough room for a sweater underneath.’

He clicked ”Buy Now,” confirmed the order details, and went to fill in the shipping address.

Jiang He thought for a moment.

’Which building was it again?’

’I visited her school a few times in my past life, but I can’t remember her dorm building number anymore.’

’Asking her directly is out of the question. Knowing Shen Yu, she’d get suspicious.’

’I have to be clever about this.’

Jiang He took out his phone and logged into the side account named ”Zodiac Little Witch.”

He found the post Shen Yu had shared yesterday about ”eating sweets makes you dumber.”

Zodiac Little Witch: Hello, my dear Cancer baby! Congratulations, you’re the lucky winner in this week’s ”Starlight Sweepstakes”! [tosses confetti][tosses confetti]

Zodiac Little Witch: To reward you for your devotion to astrology, we’re sending you a mysterious ”Warm Autumn Gift Pack”! Please send me your detailed shipping address in a private message. The gift will be sent within three days! This offer expires, so don’t delay!~ [Gift]

After sending it, Jiang He put down his phone and waited.

In less than two minutes...

He received a private message.

Little Mihu: Wow! Really? I actually won?! [Surprised]

Little Mihu: Is it really free? I don’t have to pay for shipping, do I?

Jiang He held back a laugh and replied.

Zodiac Little Witch: It’s totally free, dear! An exclusive treat just for Cancers!

Little Mihu: That’s awesome! I knew my luck was turning around! My address is: North Normal University East Campus, Women’s Dorm Building 3, Room 502. It’s for Yu’er. Phone is 138... Thank you, Zodiac Little Witch! Love ya! Mwah!

Looking at the address she’d sent over so unguardedly, Jiang He smiled again.

’She’s so gullible at nineteen.’

’That crystal-clear foolishness of a college student...’

With the address in hand, Jiang He quickly filled it into the Taobao page.

There was no quick pay option back then; the site had to redirect to the bank’s online payment portal.

A prompt appeared, saying he needed to install an ActiveX security control.

Jiang He patiently downloaded and installed it. He fiddled with it for ages, only to discover at the last step that he also needed a dynamic token card...

’I have no idea where to get that. I’ll just wait for Chen Hao to wake up and have him deal with it.’

’I have to admit, buying things online back then was a real pain, infinitely more complicated than in the future... The good news, I guess, is that money went a little further?’

Just then, Li Zijian sat up in his bed and looked down groggily.

”Old Jiang? You’re up so early? What time did you go to sleep last night? When I got up to use the bathroom, it looked like you were still writing something.”

Jiang He turned around. ”It’s nothing, I’m used to it.”

Li Zijian climbed down the ladder and said, ”I heard from Old Wang yesterday. You’re entering that thinking competition, right?”

”Yeah.”

”Awesome,” Li Zijian said. ”I don’t know how hard that competition is, but you’re the one I admire most in our dorm right now. I’m sure you’ll have no problem.”

He picked up a towel to wipe his face, then suddenly turned to Jiang He. ”Oh, right, Old Jiang, don’t go to the cafeteria. It’s crowded and you’ll have to wait in line. You should use the time to study; your books are more important. I’ll go downstairs and get you breakfast.”

Jiang He was a little surprised. ”No need, I can go myself.”

”Hey, why be so formal!” Li Zijian hung his towel on the rack. ”Brother Hao already gave the order. You’re now the ’priority asset’ of Room 402. I’ll take care of logistical support like this! What do you want to eat? Savory meat buns or fried dough sticks?”

”Two savory meat buns and a cup of soy milk, then.” Jiang He didn’t refuse this time. ”Thanks.”

”You got it! Just wait!”

Li Zijian threw on a jacket and rushed out the door.

As Jiang He was packing his bag, he received a text message from his counselor:

[Jiang He, are you awake? There’s something I need to give you a heads-up about.]

[Regarding what happened at the off-campus internet cafe last night, the school’s leadership is aware. You did a great job and didn’t bring shame to Southern Medical University.]

[However, given the current climate, the school has decided to handle this quietly. We’ve turned away a few tabloid reporters who wanted to interview you. You understand, right?]

Jiang He replied: [Understood. Thanks, Brother Sun. I don’t want to be in the spotlight either.]

Sun Jianguo replied instantly: [I knew you were a sensible kid. Don’t worry, the school will prioritize you for this year’s awards and honors. Also, I’ve seen that you’ve been working really hard lately. You don’t need to submit absence slips for the classes you missed before. I’ve already cleared them for you.]

[From now on, if you need to go to the library to do research or head to the lab, just send me a text. I’ve given you special permission. Keep it up, and try to get a good ranking in the competition. Show those old professors what we third-years are made of!]

Looking at the words on the screen, the corners of Jiang He’s mouth tilted up slightly.

He hadn’t expected there to be a follow-up to the internet cafe incident. Although it was just a small privilege regarding attendance, it would still save him a lot of trouble.

’I wonder when I’ll ascend to the ranks of the Medical University’s chosen ones?’

After finishing the warm buns Li Zijian brought back, Jiang He slung his bag over his shoulder and went to the library.

It was the same corner spot by the window on the third floor.

When Jiang He arrived, he saw Cheng Xiyao again.

’Why does this girl respawn in the library every day?’

’Whatever, it’s none of my business.’

”Morning,” she said, greeting him first.

”Morning.”

Jiang He nodded and sat down diagonally across from her.

Today, he planned to read *Harrison’s Internal Medicine*.

Seeing that he was about to start studying, Cheng Xiyao leaned in to share, ”Jiang He, did you see the campus BBS this morning?”

Jiang He said, ”No, what’s up?”

”There’s a post about someone saving a life in an internet cafe! He’s from our school, a third-year. So amazing!”

Jiang He said, ”Oh, is that so.”

”Yes,” Cheng Xiyao said with a sigh of admiration. ”The patient had a tension pneumothorax. In that kind of environment, he actually dared to use a mineral water bottle to make a water-seal drainage system... That must have taken so much courage.”

Jiang He said, ”Uh-huh.”

Cheng Xiyao continued, ”To be honest, I want to be a good doctor too, but if I were there, I definitely wouldn’t have dared to do anything. That person is just too incredible.”

Jiang He said, ”Mm.”

Cheng Xiyao: ”Oh my god, I can’t believe our year has someone like that hiding among us. I really want to meet this student, even if it’s just to look at his notes. I feel like I could learn so much!”

Jiang He: ”...”

After a moment of silence, he listened as she continued to chatter on.

Jiang He raised a hand in resignation to cut her off. ”Hey, uh... sorry, but I’m going to start studying now?”

Cheng Xiyao froze for a second, then said awkwardly, ”Oh, right. Sorry, sorry...”

Jiang He quickly immersed himself in his studies.

She rested her chin in her hands, her mind completely filled with thoughts of the ”Internet Cafe War God.”

’If only I could meet him. I really admire him so much.’

—This is how a doctor of our generation ought to be!
