Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable

Chapter 201: Chapter 201: Brooke York Is About to Break Down

”No, she said she was going to your office to find you today, and she hasn’t come back since,” Alice Cole said, looking puzzled. ”Did you not see her? Or did she not go to you?”

”She came by. Later, she said she was going to find Chloe York to convince her not to transfer her household registration. I thought she had already come back.”

”I’ll give her a call.” Hearing that Brooke had gone to see Chloe, Alice felt uneasy. She couldn’t underestimate Chloe now; there was a high chance she would bully her daughter.

Miles York didn’t stop her. He also wanted to know if Brooke had succeeded.

At this time, Brooke was in her dorm room trying to come up with a plan. But the more she thought about it, the more something felt off. Why was she living in the dorms while Chloe got to rent a place outside? Chloe had been renting an apartment since high school. High school was one thing, but this was college. Renting a place near the Southbend University campus, right in the city center, was not cheap. Where did she get so much money? Who gave it to her?

A sudden ringtone startled her and interrupted her thoughts. She glanced at her phone and saw Alice’s name flashing on the screen.

Seeing her mother calling, Brooke panicked slightly. Given the time, Miles had probably already returned home. It was highly likely that Alice was calling on his behalf to ask about her progress and whether she had completed her mission. Nervous and flustered, Brooke unconsciously bit her lower lip, torn about what to do.

After mulling it over, she finally decided not to answer the call and pretend she was asleep. Having made up her mind, Brooke lay down and turned down her phone’s volume.

”Huh, that’s weird. Why isn’t she answering?” Listening to the endless ringing with no response, Alice grew worried. She was afraid something had gone wrong when Brooke went to find Chloe.

”She’s not picking up?”

”No!”

Miles checked the time on his watch, looking as if he understood exactly what was going on. ”Alright, stop calling. Nothing’s going to happen to her. We’ll deal with it tomorrow!”

With that, Miles stood up and left the living room to head upstairs. Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Alice felt a surge of anger. Their daughter had gone to look for Chloe! She wasn’t answering her phone, and it was only nine o’clock—there was no way she was already asleep. But even if she wanted to go look for Brooke, it was too late right now. She could only try calling again tomorrow. If Brooke still didn’t answer, she would have to go find her in person.

Seeing her phone finally stop ringing at the very last second with no follow-up call, Brooke breathed a sigh of relief. But she quickly grew frustrated again. How was she going to handle Chloe now?

Compared to her anxious fretting, Chloe slept incredibly well. The date of her departure abroad was getting closer and closer. She would soon be far away from this entire main cast of characters, and her truly own life was just about to begin.

At the crack of dawn the next day, Brooke’s phone started ringing, shattering the tranquility of the entire dorm room. Soon, the complaints of her roommates rang out.

”It’s barely past five o’clock. Whose phone is that? Ringing so early in the morning—don’t you know how to put it on mute?”

”Turn it off, hurry!”

Brooke woke up in a daze. Hearing her roommates’ grumbles, she finally realized her own phone was the one ringing incessantly. She hurriedly turned the volume down. Her roommates quieted down and drifted back to sleep.

Hearing that her roommates were no longer complaining, Brooke breathed a sigh of relief. She looked at her phone screen; the caller ID prominently displayed Alice’s name.

Her resentment toward Alice couldn’t help but deepen a little. Was she crazy? What was she calling for so early in the morning? Was she trying to hound her to death?

She knew Alice definitely wanted to ask why she hadn’t come back home after making a brief appearance yesterday. And Miles surely also wanted to know if she had successfully persuaded Chloe not to transfer her household registration out. Until she got it done, she chose to ignore Alice and play deaf and dumb, completely disappearing. This would prevent Miles from being disappointed in her, as this was a prime opportunity to prove herself to him. She couldn’t afford to fail to leave a good impression; worse, she couldn’t let him think she lacked problem-solving skills. If that happened, how could he possibly hand the company over to her?

Her phone rang for a long time before it automatically hung up. Brooke muffled the device with her blanket and went back to sleep.

At this time, at the York family home, Alice was already planning to go look for Brooke.

”Sigh, why isn’t this child answering the phone? Could something have happened to her? No, I have to go find her.”

”There’s no need to look for her,” Miles said.

”No, Miles, why have you become so cold and completely devoid of familial affection lately? Brooke is your biological daughter! Her phone can’t be reached, and she’s not here with us. You’re not worried at all! I’m going to find her right now, and you tell me not to? How can you be so heartless?”

Alice knew Miles could be callous, but at a time like this—when their daughter’s safety was potentially on the line—how could he be so calm and indifferent?

”What do you know? Brooke came to see me yesterday,” Miles said. ”She said she had a way to make Chloe change her mind and abandon the idea of moving her household registration. I think this is a great time to see how she performs and whether she has the ability to solve problems.

”The fact that she’s not answering your calls means she hasn’t gotten it done. She’s either avoiding the issue right now or trying to figure out a plan. But until this matter is resolved, I’m afraid she won’t answer your calls, nor will she return home. So don’t bother her. Let her think of a solution. I told Chloe I’d give her three days to consider it, and these three days are precisely for Brooke to come up with a plan.”

After hearing Miles’s explanation, Alice lost her earlier panic. Instead, a hint of resentment crept into her tone. ”Why didn’t you tell me sooner? You made me worry for nothing.”

”Tell you? And what would telling you solve? Besides incessantly calling and disturbing her, what else can you do?”

Alice said nothing. She certainly wasn’t going to tell him that as soon as he left, she would text Brooke to let her know that her mother would help her figure out a plan together.

”Alright, I’m done talking to you. I need to head to the office anyway; I still have a pile of work to deal with!” Miles stood up and left the house.

Watching him leave, Alice immediately sent a message to Brooke.

Brooke had already fallen back asleep, so by the time she saw Alice’s message, it was past ten o’clock in the morning. To play it safe, she texted Alice back first to confirm: was she home alone? Was Miles not at home? She also took the opportunity to have Dottie act as a lie detector.

”Host, I can only detect lies when someone tells them right to your face. I can’t detect them through text messages,” Dottie replied.

Hearing this, Brooke felt even more strongly that this system of hers was utterly useless. But thinking back to Alice’s occasional actions and the things she had said in the past, there truly was still a strong mother-daughter bond between them. She decided to trust her!
