Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich

Chapter 222 -214: Unable to Bear Children

Bai Zhi was stunned. She hadn’t expected the village chief to ask such a question. ‘Does he believe those baseless rumors too?’

Bai Zhi shook her head. “Of course not. An engagement is a major event. If he and I were engaged, how could I not invite you for a celebratory drink?”

The village chief beamed and nodded. “Right you are, right you are. I figured as much. After all, Hu Feng is quite a bit older than you.”

‘Quite a bit older?’ Bai Zhi turned her head and glanced at Hu Feng, who was standing beside the wheelbarrow. A twenty-three-year-old man—he was even a little younger than she had been in her previous life.

Then she looked at her current self—still two months shy of thirteen. From that perspective, he really was quite a bit older… ‘But given my mental age,’ she thought, ‘if I were to find a man to marry someday, he’d have to be at least Hu Feng’s age!’

‘I have no desire to rob the cradle. It’s just too immoral.’

The village chief continued, “I really should have spoken to your mother about this first. But since you’re here, I couldn’t resist, so I figured I’d just tell you directly.”

Seeing his demeanor, Bai Zhi’s curiosity was piqued. “What is it? You’re being so mysterious.”

The village chief lowered his voice again. “Here’s the thing. I have a grandson. He’s sixteen—turning seventeen in a few months—and he’s reached the age for matchmaking. The family’s been busy trying to find him a match lately, but he hasn’t been happy with any of the girls we’ve suggested. I think you and he would be a perfect match. How about I arrange for you two to meet sometime?”

‘Well, this is awkward.’ To Bai Zhi, the village chief’s grandson was still a minor. ‘Go on a matchmaking date with a minor?’

Bai Zhi forced a laugh. “Uncle Village Chief, I appreciate your kind intentions, but I’m truly not in the right headspace for this right now. I just want to live a peaceful life with my mother. I have no plans to marry at the moment.”

The village chief quickly interjected, “You silly girl, what nonsense is this? Men are meant to marry, and women are meant to wed; it’s the natural way of things. I know you’re still young, and we’re not saying you have to get married right now. You can meet him first. If it’s a good match, you can get engaged and then wait a year or two to get married. My grandson isn’t that old either, you see?”

‘He’s not just “not old,” he’s too young!’ she thought. She wouldn’t dare!

‘He’s a minor. Back in the modern world, this would be illegal.’

“Uncle Village Chief, it’s not that I mean to disrespect you, but this really isn’t possible. Besides, have you forgotten? When the Bai family beat me, the injury left me unable to have children. How could someone like me marry your grandson? Even if you don’t mind, his family… well…”

The village chief froze. He suddenly remembered. That was right—Lu Changchun had definitely said that Bai Zhi was beaten so badly her internal organs were damaged, and she probably couldn’t have children anymore. How could he have forgotten about that?

If a girl couldn’t have children, it would be difficult for her to marry, no matter how pretty she was. The village chief felt a pang of regret, but then a sliver of hope emerged. “Zhi, wasn’t that just a trick you used to get away from the Bai Family? Is it actually true?”

Bai Zhi nodded very seriously. “Of course it’s true. How could I make something like that up?”

“Could it have been a misdiagnosis? Why don’t you go to a clinic in town and get checked again sometime?” The village chief was still not ready to give up.

Bai Zhi gave another forced laugh. “Yes, I’ll go get it checked at the clinic next time I have a moment.”

“Remember to let me know how it goes! I’ll be waiting to hear from you!”

Bai Zhi readily agreed again and again, seeing the village chief off with a beaming smile. Only when his figure had completely disappeared from view did her smile finally fall, and she let out a long sigh of relief.
