Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich

Chapter 208: Chapter 200: Bottomless Mystery

He glared at Meng Nan and the Jin guard. ’What is with these two?’ he thought. ’They’re like a pair of reincarnated Evil Ghosts, demanding a meal the second they see Zhi. Do they just starve when she’s not here?’

Before Bai Zhi could speak, the Jin guard, afraid she would go back on her word, quickly pulled her toward the hall. ”Miss Bai, it’s getting late. Please hurry and check my master’s wound. He’s been taking his medicine for a few days and applying the poultice on schedule, but he says his fingers aren’t as nimble as they used to be.”

Bai Zhi was pulled into the hall, and Hu Feng, resigned, had no choice but to follow.

After examining the wound, she determined his recovery was quite good. She didn’t have any modern instruments for a more precise examination, but based on her experience, he was doing well.

”The tendon in your hand was just sutured, so it’s perfectly normal for it to be stiff. Recovering this much in just three days is already a miracle. I’ll come back in a few more days to remove the stitches. At that time, you can start doing some simple exercises to help regain your strength. Not yet, though.”

Hearing her say that his recovery was going well, both Meng Nan and Jin Xiao’an breathed a sigh of relief. For the past three days, they had been strictly following Bai Zhi’s instructions for his recuperation, not daring to be the least bit careless.

Jin Xiao’an looked at his master’s wrist and said, ”Miss Bai, where did you learn such a medical technique? Stitching up a person’s wound with a needle and thread... I’ve never seen this kind of treatment before.”

When Meng Nan saw Bai Zhi’s awkward expression, he quickly interjected, ”What would you know? There are countless medical techniques in the world. Do you expect to have seen every single one? Go on, go on. Go to the kitchen and tell them to get all the ingredients ready to assist Zhi later.”

A flicker of annoyance had just crossed Jin Xiao’an’s face, but it vanished instantly when he heard the kitchen maids would be assisting Miss Bai. ”Right, right, I’ll go right now.” With that, he was gone in a flash.

Bai Zhi smiled. ”You two don’t seem like a master and servant at all. You’re more like brothers.”

Meng Nan’s gaze shifted to the doorway where Jin Xiao’an had vanished. Though Jin Xiao’an was gone, it was as if Meng Nan could still see him there. ”He came to me when he was ten, and we grew up together. I’ve never thought of him as a servant. To me, he’s closer than the brothers I have in my own family.”

Bai Zhi followed his gaze to the doorway. There was nothing there, and yet it seemed to be filled with flickering figures. ”He feels the same way about you. You’re both very lucky to have someone so close and understanding by your side.”

Meng Nan’s eyes lit up, his gaze flicking between her and Hu Feng. ”And what about you and Hu Feng? Aren’t you two like brother and sister?”

’Like brother and sister?’

Bai Zhi had never thought of it that way, but now that Meng Nan had mentioned it, she realized there was some truth to it. Ever since she and her mother had moved in with the Hu Family, Hu Feng had always been a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He was always there, silently protecting her, shielding her from life’s storms.

She smiled. ”Yes, he really is like a—”

”What’s it to you?”

Before Bai Zhi could finish, Hu Feng cut her off. He shot a look of extreme displeasure at Meng Nan, then turned his icy glare on Bai Zhi.

Bai Zhi forced a laugh and explained to Meng Nan, ”He doesn’t like people talking about him. Please don’t take it to heart.”

Meng Nan watched Hu Feng with an unreadable smile. He had always been a good judge of character, yet he could never quite figure Hu Feng out. Set in that handsome face was a pair of dark, cold eyes, like two bottomless abysses, filled with unfathomable mystery and indifference.
