Chapter 1527: Chapter 1524: Corpses Strewn Across the Land

Si Yao gracefully walked out of Tianji Pavilion, her figure akin to an immortal’s with unparalleled elegance.

She was dressed in a pure white gown as pristine as snow, its hem gently moved by the breeze, seamlessly blending with heaven and earth, indistinguishable from it.

Her face was breathtakingly beautiful, her curved eyebrows like distant indigo mountains, her eyes akin to a pool of autumn water, clear and profound, her dainty nose elegantly tilted, and her lips naturally red.

Her ink-like long hair casually draped over her shoulders, adding an ethereal beauty to her.

Her aura was extraordinarily sublime, like a fairy descending from the Nine Heavens to the mortal world, inspiring awe yet unconsciously inciting admiration.

After meticulously upkeeping the formation in Tianji Pavilion for over a month, even someone as powerful as her felt deeply exhausted, with a subtle hint of weariness gracing her brows.

However.

When her gaze inadvertently fell upon the sight in the city, shock and anger instantaneously seized her exquisite face.

Inside the city, piles of corpses amassed like mountains, stacked layer upon layer, once lively beings now reduced to cold skeletons, exuding a chilling aura of death.

The air was filled with a stench of decay so intense it was almost nauseating.

Signs of devastation were everywhere; ruins and debris abounded, charred land lay desolate, once bustling streets now eerily deserted and forlorn.

Si Yao stared blankly at the piles of corpses and the ravaged sights before her, her heart roiling like a stormy sea.

She could hardly believe her eyes; this city once full of vitality and vigor had now become akin to Hell on earth.

The accumulating mass of bones seemed to silently accuse an atrocity beyond human endurance.

Si Yao tightly clenched her fists, nails deeply embedding into her palms, yet she felt no pain.

She knew a historic upheaval had occurred within the city.

But never had she imagined the scene before her to be this horrific.

This gave her a nearly suffocating sensation, a surge of inexplicable sorrow rising in her heart.

These clansmen, having struggled to survive through the catastrophe, barely escaping the Other Races’ siege, who could have thought they would end up perishing at the hands of their own kind?

”Where on earth are the people of the City Defense Camp?”

Si Yao’s voice erupted in anger, spreading in waves towards every direction.

”Greetings, Senior Si Yao!” Wang Tong flew swiftly on a Flying Sword from afar and respectfully greeted Si Yao.

Si Yao’s face was sullen as she coldly questioned, ”Why has the city turned into this state? Are all of you in the City Defense Camp just Rice Buckets? Why didn’t you intervene in the riots?”

Wang Tong nervously lowered his head, his face full of innocence, and said, ”Senior Si Yao, it’s truly not the fault of us in the City Defense Camp!”

”When the riots erupted, we in the City Defense Camp did send people to intervene, even publicly executed a few instigators among the populace, hoping to achieve a deterrent effect.”

”But as you know, we in the City Defense Camp only have a little over five hundred members; manpower is severely limited!”

”When the entire city fell into chaos, even if we wished to intervene, we couldn’t change anything.”

”Furthermore, some of the populace even launched attacks against us, leaving us with fewer than two hundred members now.”

Si Yao sighed silently, her inner fury abating somewhat.

Indeed, even though the City Defense Camp intervened, their numbers were far too few to effectively counter the populace’s revolt.

Taking a deep breath, Si Yao endeavored to calm her turbulent emotions, her voice dripping with ice, ”Even if you couldn’t stop the riot, you shouldn’t let the bodies of the people just lie exposed in the streets.”

”They deserve a final dignity, to be laid to rest.”

She was acutely aware that such heaps of corpses were not only disrespectful to the deceased but could also incite a dreadful epidemic, the consequences of which would be unimaginable.

Wang Tong, filled with sorrow, spoke in a trembling voice, ”Senior Si Yao, you have been secluded in Tianji Pavilion all this time unaware of the mortal sufferings within the city!”

”Most of the city’s populace already has nothing to eat!”

His eyes brimmed with scalding tears as he spoke.

”What do you mean?” Si Yao looked at Wang Tong in shock, her beautiful eyes revealing undisguised terror, goosebumps instantaneously covering her skin.

Although she faintly perceived what Wang Tong meant to convey, she dared not confirm it.

”Acts of cannibalism have already occurred within the city!”

Si Yao felt as though her mind was struck with a heavy blow, a sound like ”Boom” resonating in her head.

She gazed in disbelief at the dire scene before her, a boundless sadness flooding her heart.

She could not comprehend, how a city once thriving could degrade to such depths.

After a moment of silence.

Si Yao’s gaze grew increasingly resolute as she decisively declared, ”This situation must be resolved swiftly; such tragedy cannot continue.”

”Wang Tong, immediately gather the remaining members of the City Defense Camp to properly handle these corpses, to prevent any epidemics.”

”At the same time, find a way to seek out sources of food and aid those still struggling in hunger.”

Wang Tong promptly nodded and replied, ”Yes, I will contact the remaining Cultivators in the City Defense Camp to ensure these corpses are handled properly.” With that, he took out the Communication Jade Card to convey Si Yao’s resolve to others.

Although Si Yao held no official position, everyone knew her influence in the Underground City and her favor with Lord Immortal King.

Her words were tantamount to an Imperial Edict to the people.

”Do you know which family within the city still has surplus food?” Si Yao asked Wang Tong, given she had been secluded for over a month, unaware of the dramatic changes within the city.

Wang Tong candidly replied, ”The riots erupted too abruptly, leaving many families with little surplus food. Now, the only ones likely to have surplus are the Six Great Families.”

”They possess profound reserves, they should have supplies; if salvation is sought for the city’s populace, pursuing the Six Great Families might yield results.”

Si Yao thoughtfully nodded; the Six Great Families, deeply rooted, were top-tier Immortal Sect-level entities before the Otherworldly Demons invaded, surely possessing significant resources.

With this thought, a sky-blue Longsword appeared at Si Yao’s feet, lifting her into the air, ”Lead the way, we’re going to borrow food from the Six Great Families!”

”Yes!” Wang Tong answered with full respect, then rose to lead Si Yao towards the Six Great Families.

Meanwhile, he glanced towards the southwest where Xu Wendong resided, a sharp glint flashing in his eye...
