Time Travel: The Best Doctor in Ancient Times

Chapter 688: Chapter 527: No One Knows a Child Better Than Their Mother

Gu Changsheng strolled the streets as if he were wandering through his own backyard, but the occasional sight of the townspeople immediately changed his mind!

Dayao Village, situated at the foot of Dayao Mountain, was a crucial border defense point and a settlement for the people of the Southern Borderlands, after all, relying on and living by the mountain could sustain quite a few lives!

At this moment, the city gate of Dayao Village had been breached, and the townspeople of Dayao Village, in times of changing skies and lands, should have been panic-stricken. However, that clearly was not the case.

Borjigin Nian, that fellow who favored beauty over friends, had followed Gu Changsheng for a while but soon lost interest and ran off to continue pleasing his beautiful Ru Hua, leaving Gu Changsheng to head to the city tower alone.

Atop the city tower, Little Monk Bu Jie, brought over under Xiao Cui’s escort, sat on the cratered city tower, his shiny little head gleaming in the evening glow, dressed in his little monk’s robes.

The sound of the wooden fish echoed repeatedly. Little Monk Bu Jie, as always, looked compassionate and wise, growing more proficient at reciting the Sutra of Rebirth.

Gu Changsheng found a spot next to him, imitated his posture, and sat cross-legged, resting his chin and looking down at the city.

”Little Monk, what do you think these townspeople are really thinking?” he asked.

All around Dayao Village, the devout townspeople could be seen kneeling and bowing deeply, their piety as deep as it was visible, leaving Gu Changsheng quite puzzled.

”Namo Amitābha...” With his small lips moving silently, Little Monk Bu Jie focused on the Sutra of Rebirth, completely ignoring him.

Gu Changsheng, feeling bored, couldn’t help but roll his eyes, ”Dude, it’s just a formal procedure, why so serious!”

”My lady! Being a monk and reciting sutras all day! You can’t disrespect Buddha!” Xiao Cui couldn’t help but admonish her absurd lady from behind.

Gu Changsheng, hearing this, nodded his head.

Indeed, though she was not a devout believer, she couldn’t deny others’ faith!

Though, she had always felt that, meat-eating monks might not hold very firm beliefs, however, clearly, Little Monk Bu Jie believed otherwise, thinking of himself as a very qualified good monk!

Since Little Monk Bu Jie did not engage with her, Gu Changsheng naturally wouldn’t make a fool of herself and started talking to Xiao Cui who stood behind, ”Xiao Cui, who exactly are they worshipping?”

”My lady, people of the Southern Borderlands worship the God of the Red Sun!” Xiao Cui spoke solemnly.

As a member of the Dark Night Army, Xiao Cui kept all the collected information about the Southern Borderlands close to her heart.

”No! Clearly, they are worshipping our Dark Night Army!” Gu Changsheng shook her head.

At that moment, the remnants of the Xiangka Tribe’s forces hiding in Dayao Village had already been completely routed. The Dark Night Army was now moving through the city, collecting bodies and cleaning up.

And wherever they went, those townspeople would bow deeply in reverence...

This...

”Logically speaking, I broke their city, killed their soldiers, shouldn’t they hate us to the core? How come these people are even more out of line than me, not following the script?” Gu Changsheng wondered aloud while scratching her chin.

Damn it, curiosity killed the cat, and she, Gu Changsheng, definitely didn’t want to be that cat!

Inner Strength radiated from within her as she practiced the Art of Nuanced Perception, focusing on listening to the distant worshippers’ words.

”Divine weapons descended from the heavens! Divine weapons descended from the heavens! The God of the Red Sun protects the Phoenix Clan!”

”The Divine Grace Tribe, the earth shakes, the mountains move, Divine Grace guards Dayao Village, helping it overcome this calamity!”

”Almighty God of the Red Sun, please let the Divine Grace Tribe bless us with safety and peace!”

”...”

The devout prayers reached Gu Changsheng’s ears, making the corners of her mouth twitch involuntarily.

Damn, she and that so-called God of the Red Sun were honestly not acquainted!

Just a few bombs, and she’d bizarrely become a favored one before some god?

This... Whom could she even talk to about this absurdity?

With both hands on her chin, Gu Changsheng raised her eyebrows and gestured to Xiao Cui, ”Xiao Cui, I’ve decided, let’s stay in Dayao Village a few more days!”

”Ah? Why? My lady, didn’t you say you’d lead the troops straight to Great Swamp Mountain to confront the Xiangka Tribe?” Xiao Cui immediately asked, puzzled.

Gu Changsheng smiled at this, raised her hand, and pointed to the scattered worshipping townspeople in the city, wickedly saying, ”See? These people are already scared witless by the bombs, treating you as divine soldiers descended from the heavens!”

”In the land of the Southern Borderlands, where faith runs deep, since we’ve been endowed with the name of being protected by the God of the Red Sun, of course, we should use this reputation to enjoy a few tranquil days!”

They were comfortable, so there must be someone who wasn’t!

”My lady, how should we use it?” Xiao Cui asked, puzzled.

”Wait!” Gu Changsheng exclaimed energetically, and then continued, ”Wait for three to five days, until the battle of Dayao Village spreads across the Southern Borderlands, until the name of our Phoenix Clan’s protection by the God of the Red Sun spreads! Wait for the time when the hearts of the people in the Southern Borderlands are in chaos before my Dark Night Army even arrives!”

By then, wherever her Dark Night Army passed, it would truly be like entering a realm with no one to resist!

She was eager to see, in the face of the common people’s millennia-old beliefs, how the Xiangka Clan would manage to regain control, how long they could resist!

”This plan of yours isn’t bad, my lady, but what about the Young Master? The Young Master is still in Great Swamp Mountain, aren’t you worried?” Xiao Cui scratched her head and spoke again; along the road, the anxiety of her lady was clear in her memory. How come in a blink of an eye, her lady seemed calm and unhurried?

”Him?” Gu Changsheng smiled, thinking of her own little bun, ”He is my son, Gu Changsheng’s son. There’s no one in this world who understands him better than I do! The Dandan Gang helps him not fear the witch gu. The people of the Xiangka Clan can’t do anything to him, he’s probably hopping around Great Swamp Mountain, getting into all kinds of mischief, causing who knows how much trouble!”

Xiao Cui heard this and twitched the corner of her mouth, looking down without speaking.

...

At that very moment, in the Witch Priest Ancestral Temple at the center of power for the Xiangka Clan in Great Swamp Mountain, a small figure with a face full of grievance hid in the dark, unoccupied part of the kitchen, crossing his little legs, and muttering softly to the busy chefs outside.

”Ah, why aren’t they making braised pig trotters today? Why not make braised pig trotters?”

No one paid him any attention.

”If not braised pig trotters, soy sauce chicken feet wouldn’t be bad either!”

Still, no one paid him any attention.

The little bun, his face full of indignation, lowered his head and started fumbling inside his jacket, ”Too stingy, can’t order food, not fun! What should I give them a taste of today?”

”Crotontine?”

”No, no, used that yesterday, and they had diarrhea. They would suspect something. Better change the trick!” Watching the chefs almost whitened their faces from diarrhea, the little bun with a very compassionate heart denied himself and continued fumbling.

”How about itching powder? Mom said this could make a person scratch off a layer of skin. Mm-hmm, consider it a little skin renewal for the folks here, ease into the new style!” Finally, he found a relatively harmless powder and smiled contentedly.

While the chefs were cooking, the little bun, taking advantage of their inattention and his small size, stealthily poured half a packet of itching powder into their water vat.

Having accomplished his mission, the little bun then began to worry about where to go for fun today!

These days, there were many more patrol guards in the Witch Priest Ancestral Temple, all searching for him. Regrettably, their search techniques were clearly not as clever as the little bun’s hiding skills. The little guy played hide-and-seek with the searching patrol guards while raiding the kitchen for delicious food and drugging them, causing everyone in the Witch Priest Ancestral Temple, unbeknownst to themselves, to suffer miserably!

”That mean Old Devout Woman, I plucked her clean of hair and she hasn’t appeared for days now. No good, I need to see if her hair has grown back; if it has, I’ll pluck it again! Hmph!” While the patrol guards were searching for the little bun, he was full and hydrated, scouring for Xiangka Tianji.

It must be said, the little bun was really thinking too much; Xiangka Tianji had been tormented to such a state by him that, let alone hair, even a layer of scalp was nearly peeled off. It was impossible for the hair to grow back anytime soon, perhaps, not even in her lifetime!

However, like his mother, the little bun Gu Ze was a vindictive person. Thus, while waiting boredly for his mother to come pick him up, the little bun started wandering around the Witch Priest Ancestral Temple, just to locate Xiangka Tianji.

Xiangka Tianji, the Great Witch of the Xiangka Clan of the Southern Borderlands, maybe outsiders didn’t know, but the current ruler of the Southern Borderlands was actually a male puppet, and the real power was wielded by this old woman, who although only in her fifties, looked as old as someone in her eighties or nineties!

Heaven helps those who help themselves; under the little bun’s relentless search, he finally caught up with the barely recovering Xiangka Tianji.

Watching Xiangka Tianji dismiss all the servants, the little bun, hiding in the corner, propped his little chin and looked puzzled.

After several days of recuperation, Xiangka Tianji was finally able to get out of bed. Her hair had been plucked clean, her head bloody and fuzzy, now wrapped up even tighter in a black witch robe, she huffly pushed open a secret compartment in her bedchamber.

”Wow! A secret mechanism!” Hidden in the shadows, the little bun’s eyes suddenly sparkled, and he whispered like a mosquito, ”Hidden so securely, there must definitely be treasures inside! I like treasures! I must see what’s there!”

Thus, this little tail known as the little bun followed behind Xiangka Tianji and flashed inside the door that the mechanism had opened.

With hatred gnawing at her soul, Xiangka Tianji walked forward obliviously, unaware that a little figure was following closely behind her.

A secret passage, a passage leading straight underground.

Dark and damp, the air filled with a scent of decay, the steep stairs were somewhat slippery, and the little bun walked carefully not far behind Xiangka Tianji.

His curiosity growing stronger, the little bun couldn’t help but frown.

He had seen the Treasure Pavilion of Peacock, Lion, and Tiger, the treasury of Prince Mu’s Mansion, and even his mother’s private vault, none of which were as shabby as this. This hardly seemed like a place to hide treasures; it clearly looked like a dark, low dungeon!

”The Old Devout Woman being so secretive, what exactly is hidden here?” Rubbing his little chin, the little bun looked puzzled at Xiangka Tianji, who had stopped in front of a faint door, extremely curious about what lay beyond it...
