The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing

Ye Zhiyao’s expression turned savage. She instantly activated the Sword Talisman Bai Heng had given her, and a wave of Sword Intent, brimming with boundless killing intent, shot straight for Xie Ningyuan!

Qin Yu’s face paled. ”Junior Sister, don’t!”

He knew how powerful the Sword Talisman from their master was. It was meant to save her life. Once used, the enemy would most likely have no chance of survival.

Their conflict with Xie Ningyuan hadn’t escalated to a matter of life and death.

Although he had made a move, he had no intention of killing Xie Ningyuan. At most, he just wanted to get the storage ring back.

But he never expected Ye Zhiyao to suddenly lose her mind and use the Sword Talisman their master had given her!

Unfortunately, it was too late to stop her. He could only watch helplessly as the Sword Intent rushed toward Xie Ningyuan... It was too late!

Lu Sangjiu hadn’t expected Ye Zhiyao to be so ruthless either. After all, in the original novel, while she was annoying, her hands were mostly clean of blood. Other people did her dirty work for her.

Today, who knew if it was because of Qin Yu’s sudden defiance or because Xie Ningyuan had truly infuriated her, but she had actually made a move herself.

However, Lu Sangjiu wasn’t too worried. No matter how powerful a Sword Talisman was, its full potential could only be unleashed if the user’s own cultivation was a match for it.

Therefore, this strike was at most at the level of the Golden Core Stage, definitely no match for the Sword Immortal’s attack from just now.

And Xie Ningyuan had already shown off the Defense Treasure he possessed. Ye Zhiyao couldn’t hurt him.

Lu Sangjiu had great faith in Xie Ningyuan. She stood her ground, not moving at all, just waiting for the show to begin.

However, when the Sword Intent struck at Xie Ningyuan, the familiar Buddha Seal didn’t appear.

Instead, Xie Ningyuan circulated his own Spiritual Power, enveloped himself in Merit Light, and forcefully condensed an incredibly strong protective shield.

The Sword Intent and the shield clashed for about three breaths before both shattered and dissipated.

Ye Zhiyao was also stunned. She had used her trump card, yet she had only managed to fight him to a draw!

Her face drained of color, and a flash of panic and terror crossed her expression.

After what had just happened, she understood that Xie Ningyuan was by no means a magnanimous person.

On the contrary, he was extremely petty. His whole philosophy was an eye for an eye, holding a grudge over the smallest slight.

’Her last attack was meant to kill him. So his counterattack...’

In that moment, Ye Zhiyao’s confidence crumbled, and she felt the urge to flee.

But before she could act on it, she saw Xie Ningyuan’s expression suddenly change, his entire aura falling into disarray!

Then he clutched his chest and knelt on the ground. Though he tried his best to endure it, his instantly pale face made it clear that he was in extreme pain.

Ye Zhiyao froze, then was overcome with joy!

’Could it be that even though it looked like a draw, he actually couldn’t withstand Master’s Sword Intent and suffered internal injuries?’

’Strike while he’s down.’

Ye Zhiyao immediately swung her sword. A blast of Sword Qi, laced with icy intent, shot straight for Xie Ningyuan’s face. She planned to land the finishing blow and kill him!

At that moment, Xie Ningyuan seemed completely consumed by pain, not noticing Ye Zhiyao’s follow-up attack at all.

Just as the Sword Qi was about to shred him to pieces, a hint of delight flashed in Ye Zhiyao’s eyes.

However, at the critical moment, an Ice Wall suddenly appeared, blocking her attack.

Duoduo’s Ice Wall was extremely sturdy. Ye Zhiyao’s full-power strike, relying only on her own cultivation, failed to shatter it.

Behind the Ice Wall, Lu Sangjiu helped Xie Ningyuan up and asked with a frown, ”What’s wrong with you?”

She was completely baffled. She had seen clearly just now that Xie Ningyuan was unharmed after taking that blow head-on. How could this have happened so suddenly?

Cold sweat beaded on Xie Ningyuan’s forehead from the pain, but he still managed to force a smile. ”It’s nothing... I just overexerted myself and triggered an old injury.”

’An old injury?’ Lu Sangjiu looked confused. ’Does Xie Ningyuan have an old injury?’

’He’s the Buddha Son of the Ten Thousand Buddha Sect. Even if he had some sort of injury, the Ten Thousand Buddha Sect would have surely done everything in their power to heal him. How could they have let it develop into a chronic condition?’

She was filled with doubt, but given her current ”frenemy” relationship with Xie Ningyuan, it was definitely not appropriate to pry into his private affairs.

So she didn’t press the issue, asking instead, ”Then why didn’t you use one of those mass-produced Magic Treasures of yours? Didn’t you say you still had five identical ones left?”

Even in his pain, Xie Ningyuan didn’t forget to shoot her a look that said, ’Are you an idiot?’

”You actually believe the lies I told that old codger?”

Lu Sangjiu: ”...”

She couldn’t believe she had actually fallen for his crap.

’You should have said so earlier! I would’ve had Duoduo help out. You could have saved some energy, and maybe your old injury wouldn’t have flared up, right?’

”Forget it. Do you have any Elixir Pills that can help?”

Xie Ningyuan: ”No... I need to meditate and regulate my breathing on my own.”

He paused, then said sincerely, ”So, I’ll have to rely on Fellow Daoist Lu to protect me.”

Lu Sangjiu: ”...”

It was a momentary trip from heaven to hell. Just a second ago, she had someone acting as her enforcer while she happily watched the show.

But suddenly, the tables had turned. Not only did she lose her enforcer, but she had gone from having one piece of dead weight to two... What a sin!

While the two of them conversed behind the Ice Wall as if no one else was there, Ye Zhiyao, refusing to give up, launched several more attacks.

She must have really ticked Duoduo off, because the creature began to counterattack.

Its Ice Condensation Technique and Snowball Technique were both very powerful. Combined with the fact that Qin Yu didn’t intervene, the single beast managed to push Ye Zhiyao into a miserable state.

Ye Zhiyao couldn’t help but cry out plaintively to Qin Yu, ”Senior Brother, help me!”

Qin Yu looked at her with a complicated expression and did not make a move.

’He really couldn’t understand... Why did his junior sister try to kill him just now?’

’And at first, it could be explained as an impulse. But after seeing that something was wrong with Xie Ningyuan, she went for the finishing blow again.’

’That couldn’t be explained away as a momentary impulse.’

’Junior Sister... she really wanted to kill someone.’

In Qin Yu’s heart, Ye Zhiyao had always been a kind and gentle person. That’s why when she said she just wanted to help Lu Sangjiu turn back from the brink, he believed her.

’But now? Why had she become like this?’

At this moment, Qin Yu’s unconditional trust in Ye Zhiyao began to waver, so he couldn’t bring himself to help her attack Lu Sangjiu and the others anymore.

”Senior Brother, are you just going to stand there and watch me get killed by this thing?”

Tears welled up in Ye Zhiyao’s eyes, and she looked utterly wronged.

Just as she finished speaking, she was hit by Duoduo’s Ice Condensation Technique. She cried out in alarm as half of her body became immobilized.

Seeing this, Qin Yu couldn’t just stand by and watch her get hurt, so he finally took action.

After blocking the attack for Ye Zhiyao, he shouted, ”Junior Sister Lu, stop! There’s no need for us to fight to the death!”

Lu Sangjiu had just finished talking with Xie Ningyuan. Hearing this, she did indeed have Duoduo stop.

The Ice Wall between them instantly melted away. Lu Sangjiu stood in front of the meditating Xie Ningyuan, looking at the pair across from them with a mocking gaze.

”Senior Brother Qin, your precious junior sister was just about to commit murder. Is there any point in saying something like that now?”
