The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing

Lu Sangjiu had been worried that Ye Zhiyao would suddenly appear and introduce some new complication.

That’s why she had worked with Xie Ningyuan to provoke the Sword Immortal, drain his power, and take the storage ring.

Now, it seemed that decision had been the right one. All that was left was to protect Shen Yuzhao and try to secure the swordsmanship inheritance for him.

As for whether the Sword Immortal would be biased against Shen Yuzhao because she and Xie Ningyuan had stolen his things, Lu Sangjiu wasn’t worried.

This senior had been waiting a thousand years for a suitable successor.

If Shen Yuzhao was truly suitable, the Sword Immortal wouldn’t give up on him over such a trivial matter.

Her only fear was that the female lead’s appearance would change the outcome of the inheritance.

So, of course, she had to pull in Xie Ningyuan, her powerful ally, to act as Shen Yuzhao’s guardian.

Fortunately, Xie Ningyuan was very obliging this time and agreed without Lu Sangjiu having to waste her breath.

”Fine, but you have to remember, you owe me a favor.”

Lu Sangjiu agreed without hesitation. ”Sure.”

’Favors and the like are just things used to trap people with strong moral principles, anyway.’

’Unfortunately for him, she wasn’t that kind of person.’

’So a verbal promise like this was as good as unsaid. Whether she’d return the favor later depended entirely on her mood, so she agreed without the slightest burden.’

Hearing her agree so readily, Xie Ningyuan couldn’t help but fall silent.

’For some reason, I have a nagging feeling I’ve been scammed.’

While these two reached a preliminary agreement, Qin Yu and Ye Zhiyao were on the other side, arguing for a long time without reaching any conclusion.

Just then, the Sword Immortal, who had been brooding in silence after being angered by Xie Ningyuan, suddenly spoke.

This time, he didn’t just send a voice transmission to Ye Zhiyao; he spoke aloud.

”Those two disrespectful juniors stole something from this Sword Immortal. You two newcomers, I see you’re also Sword Cultivators. You must be very eager to get this Sword Immortal’s sword techniques, right?”

”As long as you teach those two disrespectful juniors a good lesson, I, this Sword Cultivator, promise to give each of you a sword technique. How about it?”

Lu Sangjiu: ”...”

She couldn’t help but ask, ”Senior, are your sword techniques sold wholesale?”

’So, if he’s this undiscerning, how has he not found a successor in a thousand years?’

Her words made the Sword Immortal’s voice rise in anger again. ”Quick, do it now! This Sword Immortal keeps his word!”

Ye Zhiyao immediately grew more eager, unable to stop herself from tugging on Qin Yu’s sleeve. ”Senior Brother...”

But Qin Yu was still hesitant. ”Junior Sister Lu is one of us from the Seven Emotions Sect. Attacking her for a sword technique... wouldn’t that be...”

Ye Zhiyao bit her lip, a flash of annoyance in her eyes. ”Senior Brother, are you questioning my character? What’s wrong with you today? You’ve never doubted me before!”

”Do you think I’m doing this for a sword technique? Like you said, Junior Sister Lu is from our Seven Emotions Sect. She has committed such an indecent act of robbery. As her fellow sect members, are we supposed to just stand by and watch her go down the wrong path?”

Lu Sangjiu: ”...”

’That’s Ye Zhiyao for you, always finding such a high-sounding, noble-sounding excuse.’

With only the four of them present, Lu Sangjiu didn’t need to act anymore. She just laughed. ”Senior Sister Ye, you’re so noble. Should I be thanking you?”

Her tone was so dripping with sarcasm that a trace of embarrassment flickered in Ye Zhiyao’s eyes, but she still insisted that she was only doing it for Lu Sangjiu’s own good.

”Junior Sister Lu, we are from a reputable sect. This kind of thuggish behavior is unacceptable.”

”I know you might resent me now, but I can’t watch you make a huge mistake... As they say, one wrong step leads to another. I have to stop you right at the beginning!”

Lu Sangjiu rolled her eyes. ”Saving me from fire and water... I really have to thank you, you great Bodhisattva!”

She thought Ye Zhiyao’s speech was ridiculous, but what was even more ridiculous was that someone actually believed it.

After hearing Ye Zhiyao’s words, Qin Yu’s expression went blank for a moment, and then he began to waver.

What inner struggle he went through was anyone’s guess, but in the end, he turned to Lu Sangjiu. ”Junior Sister Lu, my junior sister isn’t wrong... Do not fail to do good, no matter how small; do not engage in evil, no matter how trivial.”

Lu Sangjiu: ”...”

’Alright, then. Looks like Qin Yu’s intelligence has been forcibly lowered again.’

She couldn’t be bothered to argue with them and just said, ”Oh. Since you want to fight, I won’t stop you. Mr. Xie is the one who took the item, anyway. If you can beat him, do whatever you want.”

Xie Ningyuan: ”...”

’Did she just sell me out again?’

Noticing Xie Ningyuan’s slightly reproachful gaze, Lu Sangjiu gave a light cough and sent him a voice transmission: ”Don’t look at me like that. You have to believe that my heart is on your side.”

”It’s just that, aren’t they both my fellow sect members? It wouldn’t look good for me to fight them, so it’s better if you handle it!”

”I’ll stay right here and protect my Third Senior Brother. I absolutely won’t let you have anything to worry about from behind!”

Xie Ningyuan was exasperated. ”How can you say something so shameless without batting an eye?”

Lu Sangjiu thought for a moment, then answered sincerely, ”It is merely a matter of practice.”

On the other side, Ye Zhiyao and Qin Yu naturally couldn’t hear their private exchange. Seeing that Lu Sangjiu had no intention of getting involved, they both breathed a small sigh of relief.

Qin Yu was reluctant to fight Lu Sangjiu, while Ye Zhiyao felt that if Lu Sangjiu didn’t participate, their odds in a two-on-one fight would be much better.

In any case, everyone seemed quite satisfied with Lu Sangjiu staying out of it.

With no one hesitating any longer, Qin Yu let out a low shout. ”Then we must be impolite!”

Then he and Ye Zhiyao attacked Xie Ningyuan at the same time.

They attacked the moment they said they would, startling Lu Sangjiu. She quickly dodged further back. ”Hey, go fight over there! Don’t hurt an innocent bystander!”

She still had to watch over Shen Yuzhao, so she couldn’t move too far away. She had no choice but to form a protective barrier in advance to guard against any sudden attacks, whether intentional or accidental.

Then she just stood there, watching the show as if no one else was around.

The main reason she didn’t make a move was that she wanted to see just how strong Xie Ningyuan really was.

She also wanted to see if the female lead’s halo truly had no effect on him.

’If he can really resist the female lead’s halo, then the fact that he’s so intent on pestering me might not be so unacceptable after all... I’m still so weak, I should learn to make rational use of all available resources, right?’

As the female lead, Ye Zhiyao’s own strength and talent were formidable, and Qin Yu was certainly not weak either.

But even under their combined assault, Xie Ningyuan remained completely at ease. He even managed to turn the tables, forcing the two of them into a difficult position.

’He really is strong.’

While Lu Sangjiu was marveling inwardly, Ye Zhiyao’s mood was growing increasingly frantic.

’Who in the world is he? How can he be this strong?’

Moreover, whether intentionally or not, Xie Ningyuan seemed to be specifically targeting Ye Zhiyao.

Forced to retreat step by step, Ye Zhiyao looked more and more pathetic.

So, after getting slapped in the face by Xie Ningyuan’s spell for the third time, she was finally and thoroughly enraged.

She could no longer be bothered to maintain her persona. With both her cheeks red and swollen, she roared, ”...You bastard, you forced my hand!”
