Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 590: Chapter 590: The Older Couple Who Are Tired of Studying_1

Wong Ju entered and caught such a conversation, the corner of his mouth twitched, wanting to make a sarcastic remark but finding nothing to say. Magistrate Zhou indeed acted benevolently, and although he had given a push, it was the best possible outcome for the Jiang Residence. ”Magistrate Wang, Magistrate Zhou’s birthday is approaching, what gift have you prepared?”

Magistrate Wang choked, was it really okay to discuss gifts right in front of Magistrate Zhou? After a pause he asked, ”What has Magistrate Wong prepared?”

Zhou Shuren showed interest, speaking faintly, ”Magistrate Wong must have prepared what I like the most. I thank Magistrate Wong here in advance.”

Wong Ju forced a laugh, bah, what he liked the most, his bookshelf ah, ”Ah, I still have matters to attend to.”

Magistrate Wang sneered softly, ”My Lord, your humble servant will take his leave first.”

Zhou Shuren felt it was a pity, ”Hmm.”

At the Zhou Residence, Dong Yiyi had a sound sleep and rested well throughout the night; Dong Yiyi’s complexion had improved significantly.

Zhulan asked, ”Has Jiang Ming’s condition improved somewhat?”

Dong Yiyi’s heart was heavy with complex emotions. Just a few days ago, her husband was annoyed by her, but now he lay in bed unable to move. ”He has improved. His high fever had subsided this morning, and after drinking the medicinal soup, he went back to sleep. Thank you, Auntie, I really didn’t know how else to save him.”

Even with silver, one could not always secure a doctor. A delay of a day or two could cost her husband’s life.

Zhulan didn’t plan to ask Dong Yiyi about her future plans. The Zhou family had done all they could, ”Rest here for a few days. After the old master’s birthday feast, you can set off together with Chang Lian.”

Dong Yiyi had once thought about leaving her daughter at the Zhou Residence, but having personally experienced such a rise and fall, she had no such thoughts anymore. Nothing was more important than safety, and tangible wealth and power were the only truths; otherwise, it was all an elusive dream that had cost her dearly. ”Thank you, Auntie.”

Accompanying her sister and brother-in-law on their return trip would cause her brothers to be more considerate, and their journey back would be more reassuring.

Zhulan asked, ”I heard the two children came down with a fever last night. The doctor saw them, are they feeling better now?”

The doctor had stayed at the residence overnight, which made seeking medical attention much more convenient.

Dong Yiyi rose to her feet to show respect, ”Thank you for your concern, Auntie. After the children drank their medicinal soup last night, they were much better by this morning.”

The two children had been frightened, and as their mother, she felt distressed. She didn’t know whether the ordeal had left any impact on their young minds.

Zhulan looked at Dong Yiyi. She still held Dong Yiyi in high esteem; despite many shortcomings, Dong Yiyi was resilient, which was commendable, ”Everything is behind you now, think more of the children.”

Dong Yiyi, ”I understand.”

Chang Zhong, having had his fun, ran back, ”Mother, Mother, come see, Second Brother gave me a jade-carved horse, Mother.”

No sooner did Zhulan hear the voice than the bundle of energy ran in, tumbling into Zhulan’s arms. With a hint of exasperation in her tone, Zhulan said, ”How many times have I told you not to run? What if you fall down?”

Liu Ya was getting older and could no longer keep up with Chang Zhong. She came in panting, ”Little Master.”

Zhulan pinched Chang Zhong’s nose, ”Look how you’ve worn out poor Liu Ya.”

Chang Zhong giggled, holding up the horse in his hand, ”Mother, look at the pretty horse.”

Zhulan took it from him, ”Indeed, it’s very nice. Have you taken it from your Second Brother again?”

Chang Zhong clutched the little horse in his palm, ”It wasn’t me who took it; Second Brother gave it to me, Mother, where’s my special box for the horses?”

Zhulan said, ”Your Second Brother spoils you, the box is in the room, go on and play.”

Chang Zhong shook his tiny head, ”I am the youngest in the family; it’s only right for my brothers to dote on me.”

Zhulan laughed, ”You’re only so big and yet you know quite a bit.”

Nanny Song followed suit with a laugh, ”The little Master is clever indeed.”

She had seen many children, and the young master had been intelligent since he was little.

Dong Yiyi could no longer stay, ”Auntie, you go ahead with your work, I’ll be leaving first.”

”Alright.”

Dong Yiyi did not want to go back to see her husband, seeing him only reminded her of the fearful days they had just endured. Her son and daughter had taken a sedative and were sleeping, so she ended up going to her sister’s courtyard.

There were several trunks in the courtyard. Dong Yiyi asked, ”What are these trunks for?”

Dong Chuchu cradled her child, ”These are for packing Chang Lian’s and my luggage. We will be staying for a while this time, and there’s quite a bit to prepare. Sister, did you just come from my mother-in-law’s courtyard?”

Dong Yiyi took her little niece from her, ”Yes, I went to thank Auntie. Once Chang Zhong came back, I left.”

Dong Chuchu played with the little girl using a toy sheep while Dong Yiyi’s eyes fell on the jade sheep, ”Chang Zhong just took a jade horse.”

Chu Chu smiled, ”Chang Zhong was born in the year of the horse, which is why all his toys are horses. This is something Chang Lian bought for Yu Yi.”

The smile on Dong Yiyi’s lips stiffened. The happier her sister was, the more miserable she seemed in contrast. The gap between them was only widening with time, even the child in her arms and her daughter were already far apart in their destinies.

Yu Yi was Magistrate Zhou’s granddaughter; he was the Magistrate now. Was Yu Yi all grown up?

Not to mention the Magistrate, her brother-in-law was sure to climb high as well.

Dong Chuchu saw her sister space out, ”Sister, sister.”

Dong Yiyi snapped back, ”Ah, what did you say?”

Dong Chuchu asked, ”Do you have any plans for when you go back?”

One must remember that, dealing with both her brother and sister-in-law was not an easy thing, especially since her brother-in-law had been dismissed from his position. Her father was forced to retire early because of her brother-in-law, which must also have left a bad taste in his mouth.

Dong Yiyi pinched her palm, ”I’m thinking of selling some of the dowry I don’t need, gather up some silver, and buy a couple of shops and some land. When we go back, we’ll live in the countryside. I’ll need your help then.”

Dong Chuchu was not naive; she understood what her sister meant, ”Sister, are you thinking of moving to Zhou Family Village?”

The corners of Dong Yiyi’s mouth turned bitter, ”I have no other choice; for the sake of the children, we can’t live in the city. We can’t return to the Dong family either, to avoid being despised. After thinking it over, Zhou Family Village is the only option.”

Dong Chuchu was silent; her sister understood everything clearly, ”I will talk to Chang Lian about it.”

”Thank you.”

In the blink of an eye, Zhou Shuren’s birthday arrived. Early in the morning, before the guests had arrived, Zhou’s children gathered together to present their birthday gifts first.

Zhou Shuren put on the clothes made by his daughter and sat in a chair, looking at the presents held in each family member’s hands.

Zhou’s eldest son and Lady Li stepped forward, and the eldest son said, ”Father, Lady Li and I wrote nine hundred and ninety-nine characters for ’longevity,’ wishing father a long life of a hundred years.”

Zhulan became curious and reached out to take a look. The writing wasn’t great, but for the eldest couple, who were unenthusiastic about learning, it was quite an achievement, ”It’s written with a lot of heart.”

She couldn’t find any other words of praise; the handwriting really wasn’t good looking!

Zhou Shuren also felt the sentiment, and the honest eldest couple said, ”Not bad, I like it very much.”

The eldest son and Lady Li were happy; their efforts had not been in vain. They had painstakingly written each character through the night and had to start all over again whenever they made a mistake. After many drafts, they had finally finished one.

Zhou’s second son, seeing the eldest’s gift, was filled with regret. The father really didn’t lack anything; what he lacked was his children’s sincerity. The eldest had captured that, and now his own gift seemed superficial by comparison.
