Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Buried Together?_1

Wang Ru thought Xue Han would be overjoyed to accept it and then be envious, but to her surprise, Xue Han started lecturing her, darkening her face, ”If you don’t accept my kindness, fine, you don’t need to lecture me.”

Xue Han spoke indifferently, ”In the future, do not give away jewelry given to you by other men, lest you be misunderstood as having bad intentions and offend someone without even realizing it. Please go, and don’t come again in the future. We have no relationship.”

Xue Han glanced again at the pearl bracelet. As she listened to her mother’s teachings, her understanding grew. Mr. Shi’s giving such an exquisite piece of jewelry clearly indicated he saw Wang Ru as one of his own. Bracelets are a common thank-you gift for a life-saving deed and not particularly conspicuous, but a bracelet chain must be sized correctly, plus it suited Wang Ru well. Mr. Shi’s intentions were all too evident.

Wang Ru, clutching her accumulated silver coins and now convinced that Xue Han had no chance with the male lead, no longer wished to pretend and snorted before turning away and leaving.

Zhulan turned her head silently—so even the grown girl eavesdropped!

Xue Mei felt awkward, she too couldn’t resist and coughed, ”Mother.”

Zhulan lifted the curtain, ”Go check on Xue Han.”

When Xue Han heard the movement, she knew her mother had overheard their conversation. She couldn’t help but complain, ”Mother, Wang Ru doesn’t realize that Mr. Shi sees her as one of his own and is smug about it. I remember Aunt Zheng describing Mr. Shi as about sixteen or seventeen years old; he’s sure to get married in a year or two. With no background, the best Wang Ru can do is her recipes; at most, she might become a concubine. Yet she’s completely unaware and her lack of restraint is bound to harm her sisters.”

Zhulan knew her daughter had a good heart, ”You’ve admonished her, and if your conscience is clear, that’s good enough. You cannot control what Wang Ru does.”

Hearing too many stories, Xue Han sighed, ”It’s not easy being a woman, especially one without a good reputation—it’s hard to find a way to live.”

Xue Mei was a bit confused, ”Mother, who is Wang Ru? To give away a pearl bracelet chain at the drop of a hat? When did a wealthy family arrive in our village?”

Zhulan cleared her throat and relayed the events at Wang Lao Si’s household, concluding, ”Now Wang Lao Si’s family is one of the wealthiest in the village.”

Xue Mei’s mouth twitched. The affairs of Zhou family village were indeed eventful, but, ”Mother, isn’t the change in San Ya too drastic? She couldn’t even recognize a single character and was timid since childhood, but now not only has she become bold, she even knows how to cook. San Ya has never made meals before, so how suddenly can she make pickled cabbage and sausage? She can read now? Did Xue Han teach her?”

Xue Han shook her head, ”Sister, I tried to teach San Ya, but she was so slow she couldn’t even write her name. She gave up, and I didn’t teach her anymore. As for who taught her to read, I have no idea.”

Xue Mei fell into thought, ”What’s going on?”

Zhulan, eating pine nuts, thought, don’t assume ancient people were fools. Wang Ru’s unbridled changes were clear to the village. Unable to sleep this morning, she talked with Zhou Shuren, who mentioned that the Clan Leader also discussed Wang Ru’s transformation yesterday. Some speculated if she had been possessed by a ghost, while the jealous ones deliberately told Wang family elders that Wang Ru was a demon.

Thankfully, the Wang family elders weren’t foolish. They knew that if Wang Ru were truly branded a demon, there would be no future for the Wang family, male or female, and they would all have to pay with their lives for her. With the new dynasty just established, labeling Wang Ru a demon would be criticizing the Emperor’s benevolence, suggesting he was unfit to rule. Such talk was an invitation for trouble!

The Wang family elders would never admit it and had to do their utmost to cover for Wang Ru’s behavior, wishing that Wang Lao Si’s family would just leave and the farther, the better. Eventually, even with the wealth Wang Lao Si displayed, he couldn’t purchase any land.

The Clan Leader made it a point to tell Zhou Shuren to keep their distance from the Wang family in the future, to avoid any further contact. See, everyone was shrewd!

Zhulan and Zhou Shuren felt relieved, glad they hadn’t done anything inappropriate, merely extending themselves on the basis of the original body’s knowledge. With Wang Ru attracting all the attention to fresh innovations, they kept a low profile.

Zhulan shared the Wang family’s excuse with her daughters, ”The Wang family says that Wang Ru was visited by her ancestors in a dream, learning from them in the dream.”

Xue Mei, ”....”

Xue Han, ”....”

That excuse really lacked sincerity!

Zhulan curled her lips, ”At least they didn’t drag gods and Buddhas into their dreams!”

Xue Mei, ”.....Right, the Wang family also knows what not to touch.”

Zhulan thought to herself that the minds of those who could become family elders were indeed sharp.

Xue Han was amused by her sister’s bewildered expression.

Zhulan also laughed, ”Just avoid any contact with Wang Lao Si’s family in the future.”

The two sisters nodded, both feeling that Wang Ru was rather spooky.

The next day, the Clan Leader and his wife came together. The Clan Leader came to check on the progress of the copying work and to chat with Zhou Shuren.

The Clan Leader’s wife was there to bond with Zhulan.

Zhulan called out, ”Xue Mei, go brew some good tea and bring out some pastries for your Aunt Wang to try.”

Xue Mei put down her needlework, ”Alright, Mother.”

Zhou Wang looked at the clothes made on the kang and said, ”Are these clothes for you?”
