Wen Ran turned to look at the woman in the nurse’s uniform, her eyebrows knitted in slight confusion as she asked, “Did my brother send you to fetch

“Yes, I’m the special nursing assistant for Mrs. Zou in the room next door. As I was passing by Mr. Wen’s room, he suddenly called me over. He said you had just left, and asked me to chase after you. Judging by Mr. Wen’s demeanor, it seemed like something urgent. Miss Wen, you should hurry back to check.”

As the nurse spoke, she briskly walked towards Wen Ran, reaching out to grab her.

Wen Ran’s brows knitted even more tightly. Instinctively, she dodged the woman’s hand. Although they were on the first floor, they were still a turn away from the lobby.

The relatives of the patients who had come down with her in the elevator had already left. In this small space, Wen Ran was alone.

The phone in her hand was connected after two rings. Qin Mu’s voice came from the other end of the line. Dodging the woman’s hand, Wen Ran’s face was a bit displeased, “What are you doing?”

“Miss Wen, I’m afraid Mr. Wen would get anxious.”

The woman’s complexion flickered as she calmly explained. After speaking, she urged Wen Ran again, “Miss Wen, please go upstairs.”

If she hadn’t been so eager to grab Wen Ran a second time, Wen Ran might not have had any suspicion. After all, the woman was dressed in a nurse’s uniform and had a nurse’s certificate pinned to her chest. Wen Ran didn’t scrutinize whether the person in the certificate photo was the same woman.

But the woman was too anxious. Not only did she reach out to grab Wen Ran again, but her actions were not at all like a nurse, but rather like a well-trained, highly skilled individual.

“You’re not a nurse at all. Don’t touch me. I’m not going upstairs with you.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

Wen Ran tried to run, but the woman was nimble, and quickly grabbed her wrist. Her tone suddenly turned cold. Startled, Wen Ran found a glimpse of her connected call in the corner of her eye and shouted, “Qin Mu, I am on the first floor.”

After she shouted, she loosened her grip, her phone falling as she lowered her head to bite down hard on the woman’s wrist. Being a woman herself, the pain caused the woman to instinctively release her grip.

Seizing her chance, Wen Ran broke free and ran.

“Damn it!”

The woman cursed under her breath. She wanted to give chase, but seeing the phone on the ground, she hesitated. In the end, she decided not to chase Wen Ran. One, because Ranran ran too fast, and two, because others had been alerted. If she didn’t leave now, she wouldn’t be able to.

As Wen Ran turned the corner into the lobby, she ran into MO Xiuchen. “Ranran, what happened?”

Seeing her flustered expression, MO Xiuchen frowned and pulled her into his embrace.

Out of breath, Wen Ran turned to look behind her. “A woman dressed up as a nurse just tried to take me away. Xiuchen, it’s perfect that you’re here. Let’s go check on my brother quickly.”

MO Xiuchen’s gaze darkened upon hearing this. His voice held a hint of coldness when he spoke, “Where is this woman?”

Wen Ran led MO Xiuchen back to the spot, explaining as they went, “She came from the staircase when I got out of the elevator. I was calling Qin Mu to inform him when she stopped me. My phone…”

When they reached the corner, all Wen Ran saw was her phone on the ground. The woman had disappeared without a trace.

MO Xiuchen assessed the stairwell with a chilling gaze. Releasing Wen Ran’s hand, he took two steps forward to retrieve her phone. Just as he straightened up, the sounds of hurried footsteps could be heard. Qin Mu and Gu Kai rushed out of the stairwell together.

“Ranran, are you okay?”

Relieved to see Wen Ran standing safely with MO Xiuchen, Gu Kai took a deep breath.

Qin Mu still looked worried, “I rushed down here with Ah Kai as soon as I heard your voice on the phone. Where’s the woman, Xiuchen? When did you get here?”

MO Xiuchen responded coolly, “She left. I ran into Ranran in the lobby. Speaking of which, Ranran is worried about her brother. Why don’t you run upstairs and check on Wen Jin?”

Gu Kai glanced at Wen Ran and nodded, “I’ve already made a call to lock down the hospital. We’ll catch that woman for sure. Ranran, I’ll pop upstairs to check on your brother first. You guys can wait for me in my office or the guard room.”

“We’ll wait in the guard room.”

Wen Ran replied calmly, grateful for MO Xiuchen’s thoughtful consideration. If she returned to her brother’s room now, it would only raise his suspicions. She was fine now and didn’t want to worry him any further.

The woman who’d impersonated a nurse must not be acting alone. Now that they hadn’t caught her, she and her accomplices would surely leave as soon as possible.

After Gu Kai left, MO Xiuchen, Wen Ran, and Qin Mu went to the guard room, ordering the staff to pull up the security footage from that evening to see what happened in the elevator.

MO Xiuchen held Wen Ran’s hand tightly throughout the review of the footage. Seeing how the woman had grabbed her and how Wen Ran had bit the woman’s wrist in desperation, his brows furrowed tightly.

“I’ll let Ah Kai know right away that the woman was bitten by Wen Ran. It’ll make it easier to identify her if she’s still in the hospital.”

Unable to stand the chilly aura radiating from MO Xiuchen, Qin Mu spoke gently and took out his phone to call Gu Kai.

Wen Ran looked up at MO Xiuchen and saw the guilt written all over his face. Her heart tightened, and she covered his well-defined hand with her own, whispering, “Don’t blame yourself. I’m okay, aren’t I?”

MO Xiuchen’s gaze softened. The guilt in his eyes was replaced by an emotion he couldn’t quite decipher.

His grip on Wen Ran’s hand tightened. In front of others, he couldn’t help admitting, “Ranran, I failed to protect you. I am glad you’re okay. If anything were to happen to you…”

Wen Ran placed a hand over his mouth, stopping him from continuing his sentence. A gentle smile graced her features, “This isn’t your fault. You’re not an immortal. You can’t foresee everything.”

Seeing his self-blame, Wen Ran felt a pang of pain. What happened tonight was unexpected, not just for MO Xiuchen, but for everyone.

After all, this was Gu’s territory. Those trying to harm her were indeed bold.

Looking into Wen Ran’s softly smiling eyes, a rush of emotions flooded MO Xiuchen. On the side, Qin Mu signaled a staff member, and the two left the room.

In the room were just the two of them, eyes locked on each other, focused only on the other’s presence, indifferent to the departure of the others.

Their intimate moment was interrupted by Gu Kai’s voice at the door. Wen Ran’s hand, which had been covering MO Xiuchen’s mouth, hastily moved away. Their silent exchange had left her feelings in a complicated disarray.

Love for someone doesn’t always have to be expressed in words. MO Xiuchen had never told her that he loved her, but from his guilt and anxiety over her situation, she could feel his care for her.

This wasn’t an act, MO Xiuchen, the proud and accomplished man, wouldnt stoop to pretending. This realization alleviated her concern over Cheng Jia’s previous words..
