When Wen Ran returned to the pharmaceutical factory, Li Qian and Qin Mu happened to be coming back with several medicinal material suppliers. With her mind preoccupied, she put everything about Cheng Jia out of her mind.

As it approached the end of the workday, she went back to her office to check some data, gathering her belongings and preparing to join the medicinal material suppliers for dinner. Just then, there was a sudden knock on the office door.

Thinking it was Li Qian or a department manager, Wen Ran politely said, “Come in” while she closed down her computer.

As the door swung open from the outside, no words were spoken. She shut down her computer, looked up to see who was at the door. Her heart gave a jump when her gaze met the tall figure standing in the doorway.

The person entering was not an employee from her company, but the figure blocking nearly all the light from the doorway. The man’s handsome features were hidden in shadow, and it was indeed MO Xiuchen.

The duration of daylight was now shorter with the arrival of autumn, and coupled with the inclement weather, even at 5 pm, it was already growing dark. Wen Ran hadn’t bothered to turn on the lights when checking data in her office. MO Xiuchen blocked the light from the outside. His facial features shadowed, his contours were distinct, and his cool, deep-set eyes projected an air of chilliness befitting the season.

With a flicker in her eyes and a smile on her face, Wen Ran asked in surprise, “What brings you here?”

MO Xiuchen stood at the doorway, silently staring at her. His eyes so deep as if they were a thousand-year-old abyss, drawing her in.

The atmosphere in the office seemed to subtly shift because of him. Wen Ran felt somewhat lost and stunned. Seeing that he wasn’t coming closer, her mind raced. Once she realized what was going on, her expression changed slightly. She quickly left her desk and moved towards him, explaining, “My phone ran out of battery this afternoon, and when I got back, Sister Qian and Assistant Qin were here with the guests. I was so busy that I forgot to call you back.”

Despite her unease about Cheng Jia, she did not want to vent these emotions on MO Xiuchen. As long as he had no inappropriate intentions or actions towards Cheng Jia, she would do her best to convince herself not to be too petty.

As MO Xiuchen watched her walking towards him, his deep gaze rested on her smiling eyes. He recalled the things Cheng Jia had said to him on the phone and how his calls to Wen Ran were then sent to voicemail. His heart seemed to be stung by something, an indescribable feeling gripped him instantly.

When Wen Ran was just two steps away from him, he suddenly closed the door, reached out, pulled her tightly into his embrace, and captured her tender lips in a passionate kiss.

“Even if you’re busy, you mustn’t let your phone die.”

During the afternoon at his company, when he couldn’t reach her by phone, all sorts of thoughts crossed his mind. The most unbearable was his assumption that Wen Ran was mad and avoiding him.

“Alright, I’ll pay attention from now on.”

“I thought you were mad earlier.”

Hearing her compliant reply, guilt washed over MO Xiuchen again, “Did I hurt you just now?”

“Why don’t you sit over there first?”

Understanding what she was thinking, a faint smile crept upon MO Xiuchen’s lips. He released her and moved toward the couch.

Wen Ran planned to sit on the couch across from him, but MO Xiuchen grabbed her hand and pulled her down beside him. He stared intently at her, “Ranran, are you mad?”

“No. This isn’t the first time Cheng Jia has said those things, and I have no reason to be mad.”

Wen Ran avoided his deep gaze, staring instead at the hand he held in his.

“There’s a piece of information I’ve been withholding. Originally, I wasn’t planning on telling you. But after hearing what Cheng Jia said this afternoon, I felt I should tell you.”

Wen Ran looked puzzled. She raised her eyes to meet his but remained silent.

MO Xiuchen let out a soft sigh, explaining gently, “Of all the things Cheng Jia said, only one thing is true. That is, when your parents died in a car accident and your company fell into crisis, Xiao Wenqing was afraid you’d turn to MO Zixuan and get him involved.”

Wen Ran’s face changed slightly, Cheng Jia’s words echoing in her ears.

She claimed that Xiao Wenqing wanted to drug her and find a random man to ruin her.

Her fists clenched in her lap. An indescribable emotion welled up within her. Why would Xiao Wenqing do such a cruel thing?

“Why did you help me, then?”

Gazing intently at MO Xiuchen, Wen Ran remembered she didn’t know him before. Why would he help her avoid Xiao Wenqing’s scheme and then marry her under the pretense of helping her father’s company through its crisis?

Was it true what others said, that he married her just to make MO Zixuan— the man who loved her— suffer?

MO Xiuchen’s eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of darkness gathering in their depths. He knew she was misunderstanding him.

“I didn’t marry you to take revenge on MO Zixuan. If I wanted to deal with them —him and his mother—I would have other methods. I wouldn’t need to use you to provoke him. ”

As he spoke, his voice grew lower, like a sunny day suddenly overtaken by dark clouds.

Looking at MO Xiuchen’s handsome face, Wen Ran was at a loss for words.

“Do you remember the first time we met?”

After a moment, MO Xiuchen asked calmly. The darkness in his eyes faded away, leaving only an unfathomable depth. He hoped she could remember, yet he also felt he was setting himself up for disappointment..
