Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1148: Chapter 1150: The Extremely Anxious Fiancé_1

Bai Ruozhu didn’t mention much about her time in the Palace after returning home, and her parents didn’t seem too concerned either, since she had stayed in the Palace for a few days before. However, her second brother looked at her with some depth in his gaze. Bai Ruozhu inwardly panicked, trying her best to act very naturally. Fortunately, her second brother did not ask anything.

Dengdeng hadn’t seen his mother for several days and clung to her as soon as she returned home. He used to cling to her when he was younger, but now that he was older, he had become more calculating.

”Mommy, it hurts...” Dengdeng’s face puckered up as he began to cry. The little imp looked particularly pitiful, and Bai Ruozhu, feeling distressed, quickly went to hug him and asked, ”Where did you hurt yourself? Shall Mommy blow on it to make it better?”

Dengdeng nodded through his tears, and Bai Ruozhu blew on it, which made him stop crying.

But Bai Ruozhu soon realized his little scheme. Given Dengdeng’s usual balance, he hardly ever fell over on flat ground, especially when he wasn’t running. Besides, Dengdeng had always been a tough little man, usually getting up by himself when he fell and rarely crying. So, his behavior today was indeed unusual.

Therefore, there could only be one reason: he wanted to stick close to his mom, so he was being coquettish.

Understanding this, Bai Ruozhu didn’t point it out. She thought that she’d often been away from home and Dengdeng was getting more sensible, growing more attached to her, hence his behavior.

However, she thought with amusement that such a young child was already so cunning; he must have inherited that from his father.

Thinking so, Bai Ruozhu didn’t feel that she was being cunning herself and automatically attributed all the blame to Jiang Yichun.

And so, Bai Ruozhu spent the whole day with her son. The next morning, once Dengdeng was sure his mother wasn’t leaving, he happily went off to play with his little cousin Chenxi.

Bai Ruozhu finally got to rest for a while when she was informed that Miss Gu from the Gu Family had arrived. In fact, Miao An had visited the day before yesterday and, learning that Ruozhu had stayed in the Palace, even stayed for lunch and chatted with her mother. Bai Ruozhu had been meaning to thank Miao An.

Shortly after, Miao An was led in by a maid. She came forward with a smile and said, ”Ruozhu, you were so happy in the Palace that you forgot all about home. I’ve been eagerly waiting for you to come back.”

They were familiar with each other, and such teasing was quite normal. However, when Bai Ruozhu heard ”forgot all about home,” she couldn’t help but think of the mice in the Sky Prison. She certainly had not been so happy that she forgot about home.

”Ruozhu, what’s wrong? Did something happen in the Palace?” Miao An suddenly asked.

Bai Ruozhu quickly composed herself, thinking that Miao An was very perceptive; she had noticed something was amiss after just one distracted moment.

”Nothing, it’s just that when you said ’forgot all about home,’ I couldn’t help but remember that I seemed to hear a mouse last night. I’m quite scared of mice,” she said quickly, finding an excuse.

Miao An gasped and covered her mouth, ”It must be scary to have mice at night when Master Jiang is not here. Why don’t you get a cat?”

”I’m not really interested in cats. I’d rather have a dog,” said Bai Ruozhu, chuckling. She had worked part-time taking care of dogs while studying abroad; walking them, giving them baths, and so on. She felt particularly happy every time she took care of dogs.

Miao An burst out laughing, ”Dogs can’t catch mice. A dog chasing mice would be meddling in affairs that don’t concern it.”

Bai Ruozhu also couldn’t help but laugh, ”You just mentioned ’eager anticipation.’ What did you need to see me about, after all?”

Gu Xue’an hurriedly took out a booklet from her bag, opened to a page, and pointed, saying, ”Ever since I began learning accounting from you, I’ve started to examine the Bai Family’s account books. On one hand, it’s good practice; on the other hand, it also helps out my parents. But unexpectedly, it seems like there might be a problem here, yet my knowledge is shallow, and I’m afraid of making a mistake.”

”Oh? Let me have a look.” Bai Ruozhu took the account book and sat down at the table, then scrutinized it carefully, flipping back and forth through the pages.

”The accounts are accurate, and there’s no false accounting, it’s just that this part here has been recorded incorrectly,” Bai Ruozhu pointed to the spot Gu Xue’an had referred to. ”Actually, when we examine accounts, we need to consider the context, not just one specific part. We have to ensure continuity between the different parts so that even if there is false accounting, an analysis will reveal it.”

Gu Xue’an slapped her forehead in frustration, ”It seems my learning is still insufficient; I must continue to study hard with you. If I had gone to confront the shopkeeper without asking you today, I might have wrongfully accused an innocent person, and possibly even disheartened a loyal servant.”

”When you go back, tell him that this part was recorded incorrectly. Once he knows you understand how to read the ledgers, he’ll be more careful in the future, and he’ll also respect you more,” Bai Ruozhu advised.

Gu Xue’an nodded eagerly, making sure to commit everything Bai Ruozhu had said to memory.

”Miss,” a guard’s voice came from outside the room, ”a young master from the Main Courtyard has arrived, saying he’s here to visit his fiancée. The madam had someone bring him over directly; they should be arriving any moment.”

”Fiancée?” Gu Xue’an muttered to herself, her cheeks flushing bright red.

Bai Ruozhu burst into laughter; it was obviously Lin Xufei. The Bai Family wasn’t particular about the numerous formalities, otherwise, they wouldn’t have allowed Lin Xufei to come over by himself. Her mother was warm-hearted as well, clearly wanting the young couple to meet sooner.

Gu Xue’an stood up swiftly, her voice filled with nervousness, ”Is it him? How did he come here?”

Even though she had already guessed, Gu Xue’an feared she might be wrong and would be disappointed for no reason. Nervously, she walked toward Bai Ruozhu’s mirror and started fixing her hair while asking, ”Ruozhu, could you please help me check if my hair and clothes are alright?”

Before Bai Ruozhu could reply, Gu Xue’an complained, ”Oh, why didn’t he send a message in advance? I left the house in such a rush this morning and didn’t get properly ready.”

Bai Ruozhu was doubled over with laughter; Gu Xue’an looked quite well-dressed today, rather refined and elegant, which suited her true nature. Gu Xue’an might not have been a top beauty, but she had a unique aura of elegance, and likely that was what appealed to Lin Xufei. Otherwise, with Lin Xufei’s looks, picking a woman more beautiful than he would not have been easy.

”You’re already very beautiful, don’t worry, just calm down,” Bai Ruozhu came over, patted Gu Xue’an on the shoulder, and led her out of the room, standing in the Yard.

As expected, Lin Xufei arrived like a gust of wind. He moved quickly, and only when he saw the teasing expression on Bai Ruozhu’s face did he realize and slow down his steps, although he was still walking much faster than usual.

”Lin Xufei pays his respects to Madam Jiang,” Lin Xufei advanced and greeted Bai Ruozhu, who held back her laughter and said, ”No need for formalities with me; everyone knows you’ve come to see Miao An. It’s been a long time since you two saw each other, have a chat.”

Gu Xue’an’s face turned as red as if it were about to bleed, and she clutched Bai Ruozhu, pleading, ”Ruozhu, don’t tease me like this, stay and keep me company.”

”My precious son is very clingy and also wants my company. You’re not trying to compete with a child for attention, are you? Alright, you two talk; I’ll have a maid send over some Dimsum and tea.” Bai Ruozhu said with a smile and left.

Lin Xufei coughed lightly, feeling awkward, and then in a gentle voice, he asked, ”Miao An, have you been getting accustomed to the Capital?”
