Max Level Return—I'll Protect That Fragile One

”Got it!”

Twelve burly retired warriors surged towards Xu Xingguang. They weren’t picky about their meals, didn’t need chopsticks or plates, just grabbed the buns and ate them.

The night shift guard captain, Cheng Shiguang, swallowed two buns whole before lowering his voice to speak to Xu Xingguang, ”Boss, there’s something I need to report to you.”

Seeing Cheng Shiguang’s serious expression, Xu Xingguang took him outside the gatehouse to speak.

”What is it?”

Cheng Shiguang told her, ”Last night, while patrolling the tower, I saw several motorcycles chasing someone from the direction of Tuo Ling Peak, heading towards Cangshan.”

The words Tuo Ling Peak and motorcycles triggered Xu Xingguang’s nerves, making her think of the Underground Beast Fighting Arena.

”What kind of motorcycles?”

Cheng Shiguang said, ”The searchlight just happened to shine on them, I saw clearly. It was a black mountain off-road bike.”

”What about the person they were chasing?” Xu Xingguang asked again.

Cheng Shiguang said, ”I didn’t see the person clearly. When I noticed, they had just jumped into the wetland lake behind Cangshan, seems like they were cornered and had no choice but to jump.”

”I’m worried this might lead to a fatality. Although the wetland lake isn’t our territory, it’s close to Cangshan Town. If someone dies, it won’t be good.”

Cheng Shiguang had faithfully reported his findings to Xu Xingguang, but whether to intervene still depended on her instructions.

After thinking for a while, Xu Xingguang said, ”Brother Cheng, after breakfast, let’s go take a look together.”

Cheng Shiguang said, ”To be on the safe side, let’s bring a few more people.”

”Alright.”

After quickly finishing breakfast, Cheng Shiguang and Xu Xingguang brought a few night shift brothers and drove a Wuling Hongguang to the wetland lake behind Cangshan to check the situation.

The weather forecast said it was going to be a rainy day. It hadn’t rained yet in the morning, but there was already a dense fog over the wetland lake.

The wetland park shrouded in fog felt cold and dangerous.

Cheng Shiguang took Xu Xingguang to the section where the person jumped into the lake, pointing to the deep water below, he said, ”They jumped in right here.”

Xu Xingguang lowered her eyes to look at the tire marks on the ground.

These off-road motorcycle tracks were the same as the ones chasing her into the No-man District that night.

It was indeed people from the Underground Beast Fighting Arena.

Looks like a boxer escaped and was chased here by people from the Underground Beast Fighting Arena.

The Underground Beast Fighting Arena and Cangshan are over three hundred kilometers apart, the escapee was clearly heading for Cangshan.

Could it be that forgetful youth she had only met once?

”Boss, we haven’t seen a floating corpse; should we still care?” It’s only been three or four hours since they jumped into the lake; if drowned in the lake, it will take a few hours to float to the surface.

Currently, there are two possibilities.

One, the escapee drowned in the lake and might float up by tomorrow.

Two, the escapee swam out of the lake and might be hiding in the endless reeds.

Of course, it’s also possible they hid in the reeds, injured and died.

Xu Xingguang stared at the sprawling reeds in the fog, her mind fleeting with the image of the youth, her rare sympathy was stirred.

If the person who jumped was indeed that youth, he went through so much to come to Cangshan just to find her.

She truly couldn’t ignore it.

”Let’s look.”

Hearing Xu Xingguang’s words, Cheng Shiguang breathed a sigh of relief.

Cheng Shiguang and his men were retired soldiers, unafraid of bleeding and injury, but that didn’t mean they had hearts of stone.

On the contrary, they consistently remembered their mission as soldiers to protect the country and care for the people.

Seeing someone cornered with no path but to jump into the river in desperation, Cheng Shiguang wanted to rescue them.

”Alright boss, we’ll set out to search right away!”

The six took inflatable boats from the car, ready to split up and search for the fugitive.

Xu Xingguang suddenly asked Cheng Shiguang, ”Brother Cheng, if it was you, after jumping into the lake to evade the enemy, what would you choose to do?”

Cheng Shiguang, without a second thought, said, ”Swim ashore and then hide.”

”Hmm.” Xu Xingguang nodded, thoughtfully saying, ”What we can think of, the killers can too.”

Cheng Shiguang’s eyes slightly narrowed.

He looked at Xu Xingguang standing by the roadside and humbly sought her advice, ”So in your opinion, what is the safest approach?”

Xu Xingguang said, ”Hiding is indeed right, but don’t hide in the reeds.”
