Chapter 93: Chapter 93: field visit IV

Ms. Lee gathered the revised proposal and gently closed the folder before setting it aside.

”I believe,” she said, looking around the conference table, ”that concludes our discussion regarding the feasibility study itself.”

Several students exchanged satisfied smiles.

After nearly three hours of discussion, revisions, and careful debate, the proposal no longer resembled the rough draft they had submitted weeks ago.

It had become something far more substantial.

Not merely an academic requirement.

A genuine research project.

Ms. Lee reached for the presentation remote.

The projected document disappeared.

In its place appeared a detailed regional map.

Three communities were highlighted in different colors.

Road networks.

Community facilities.

Commercial districts.

Township halls.

Foundation partner establishments.

Each location had been carefully annotated.

”I’d now like to discuss this afternoon’s field visit.”

The room immediately became attentive.

Before anyone could speak, Ms. Lee smiled.

”But before we discuss schedules...”

”I think it’s important that we all share the same understanding of today’s purpose.”

She paused just long enough for every eye to return to her.

”This afternoon is not about gathering as much data as possible.”

”It is not about finishing every interview.”

”And it certainly isn’t about proving your proposal correct.”

Several students instinctively glanced toward the questionnaires resting inside their folders.

”Today,” she continued, ”is simply the beginning.”

”The beginning of your relationship with the communities that may accompany this research for many months.”

A thoughtful silence settled across the room.

”If today’s visit is successful...”

”It won’t be because you collected the most information.”

”It will be because, when you return...”

”...the people remember your names.”

Mr. Hughes stood, smiling as he adjusted his glasses.

”Research often gives the impression that data comes first.”

He shook his head.

”It rarely does.”

”People come first.”

He gestured toward the map.

”The Foundation has worked alongside communities for many years.”

”And we’ve learned one lesson repeatedly.”

He smiled knowingly.

”People don’t begin meaningful conversations because someone is carrying a clipboard.”

Soft laughter spread around the room.

”They begin meaningful conversations because they feel comfortable.”

”They trust the person asking.”

He looked toward the students.

”Trust is not something you request.”

”It’s something you earn.”

Mr. Carter stepped forward.

”With that in mind...”

”Our regional office has already spent the past week preparing for your arrival.”

Several students blinked.

Peter looked surprised.

”Preparing?”

Mr. Carter nodded.

”The barangay officials have been informed.”

”The community coordinators know your schedules.”

”Our local Foundation volunteers are expecting you.”

”The business owners who agreed to meet your teams have adjusted their own work for this afternoon.”

Oliver’s eyes widened.

”...Already?”

Mr. Hughes laughed softly.

”If your first conversation begins with introducing yourselves...”

”You’ve already lost valuable time.”

Gentle laughter rippled through the room.

”Our responsibility is to ensure that, when you arrive...”

”...you arrive as welcomed guests.”

The regional map enlarged.

The three highlighted communities remained visible.

Mr. Carter rested a hand lightly against the table.

”Now...”

”I’d like to discuss your proposed community selections.”

Vivienne instinctively straightened.

Mr. Carter smiled reassuringly.

”Let me begin by saying this.”

”We agreed with your methodology.”

He glanced briefly toward the faculty members.

”And we agreed with your selection criteria.”

Relief quietly spread through the room.

”Your Study Group carefully identified three communities that satisfied the requirements established in your proposal.”

”Economic stability.”

”Established commercial activity.”

”A diverse network of local businesses.”

”They were thoughtful recommendations.”

Vivienne quietly released the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

Mr. Carter continued.

”However...”

”As we reviewed your proposal alongside our field records...”

”We identified one additional operational consideration.”

The room became attentive once more.

”For that reason...”

”We recommended replacing one of the three proposed communities.”

A new district slowly illuminated on the map.

Riverside.

Jessica frowned slightly.

”...Only one?”

”Only one.”

Mr. Carter nodded.

”The remaining two communities remain exactly as your Study Group proposed.”

Peter leaned forward.

”What made Riverside a better choice?”

Mr. Carter folded his hands together.

”The answer comes from something your proposal could not reasonably account for.”

Several students looked puzzled.

”Our Foundation has worked alongside these communities for many years.”

”We possess historical information that simply isn’t available through public records or short-term observation.”

He gestured toward the highlighted communities.

”Your proposal identified communities that met the academic criteria.”

”Our responsibility was determining which of those qualified communities would provide the strongest environment for the initial feasibility study.”

He raised one finger.

”Based on our experience, we believed the study should begin in communities where an established relationship with the Foundation already exists.”

”Not because it guarantees success...”

”But because it removes one unnecessary variable.”

”When trust already exists...”

”You can begin evaluating the study itself instead of spending the first several months establishing credibility.”

He raised a second finger.

”We also looked for communities where, at some point in the past, residents or local business owners had informally expressed a desire to help another community if an opportunity ever arose.”

Oliver tilted his head.

”You mean they had already committed to helping?”

Mr. Carter immediately shook his head.

”No.”

”Not commitments.”

”Not donations.”

”Not formal pledges.”

Mrs. Whitmore smiled warmly.

”Sometimes, after a community has overcome its own difficulties, someone quietly says...”

’If we’re ever in a position to help someone else someday, we’d like to.’

”Nothing more.”

”It’s simply a sincere expression of gratitude.”

”And a hope that one day they might pass that kindness forward.”

A thoughtful silence settled across the room.

Mr. Carter continued.

”We do not know whether those communities possess commercially meaningful surplus.”

”We do not know whether a structured redistribution model would ultimately prove practical.”

”And we certainly do not assume either.”

He looked toward Vivienne.

”Those are precisely the questions your feasibility study is designed to answer.”

”The Study Group determined what should be investigated.”

”Our role was deciding where the investigation could begin most effectively.”

He indicated Riverside on the map.

”When we applied that additional operational consideration...”

”We found that Riverside satisfied all of your original selection criteria...”

”...while also providing a stronger environment for the first phase of fieldwork.”

Jessica slowly nodded.

”So...”

”The methodology didn’t change.”

”No.”

”The hypothesis didn’t change.”

”No.”

”The research question didn’t change.”

”No.”

Mr. Carter smiled.

”We simply selected a different starting point.”

He looked around the room.

”Your proposal provided the academic framework.”

”Our experience informed its initial implementation.”

”They are two different responsibilities.”

The students exchanged glances before several of them nodded in understanding.

Vivienne looked once more at the map.

For the first time, she understood something that no research paper could have taught her.

Designing a study and carrying one into the real world were not the same task.

One required careful reasoning.

The other required years of experience.

And today...

Those two perspectives had just met.
