Chapter 75: Chapter 75: inside the ashford foundation

The six of them stepped out of the Community Outreach and Development Program room together.

The conversations left behind in the seminar room gradually faded as they made their way toward the staircase.

Vivienne naturally expected them to head toward the Foundation’s main hall on the ground floor.

Instead...

Damian continued walking.

Down the broad central staircase.

Past the familiar reception hall where they had attended orientation several weeks earlier.

Past the spacious multipurpose hall where Foundation assemblies and meetings were often held.

Past the cafeteria, already beginning to prepare for the lunchtime crowd.

Without slowing...

He turned toward a quieter corridor near the rear of the building.

There...

Another staircase descended below ground.

Vivienne blinked.

”...There’s another floor?”

Peter smiled.

”Most student volunteers never come down here.”

Jessica nodded.

”The Foundation’s operational departments are located in the basement.”

”The ground floor is designed for visitors, meetings, and public activities.”

”The work itself happens below.”

As they descended...

The atmosphere changed.

Gone were the open spaces intended for guests.

In their place stood long, well-lit corridors lined with neatly marked offices.

Brass plaques identified each department.

Community Partnerships.

Volunteer Coordination.

Community Logistics.

Finance and Grants.

Outreach Administration.

Employees moved steadily from one office to another carrying reports, ledgers, and correspondence.

Telephones rang softly somewhere in the distance.

Office doors opened and closed as conversations quietly continued behind them.

Nothing felt rushed.

Yet everything moved with quiet efficiency.

Vivienne slowed almost unconsciously.

Orientation.

Proposal presentations.

Those were the only parts of the Foundation she had personally experienced since entering this world.

And in the original novel...

The Ashford Foundation had rarely been more than a setting.

Meetings happened.

Outreach projects succeeded.

Students volunteered.

The story had never lingered on how any of it actually worked.

Now...

Standing beneath the Foundation’s public halls...

She found herself looking at everything the novel had quietly skipped.

...So this is how it all happens.

Meanwhile, Damian stopped before one of the offices.

A polished brass plaque read:

Community Partnership Office

He knocked lightly.

”Come in.”

Damian opened the door.

Inside...

The office was bright, orderly, and remarkably calm.

Tall filing cabinets lined one wall.

Large maps covered another.

Several staff members reviewed reports while others answered correspondence or spoke quietly with representatives from various community organizations.

The atmosphere felt practiced.

Experienced.

Purposeful.

A woman in her late fifties looked up from a neatly organized stack of folders.

The moment she recognized Damian...

A warm smile appeared.

”Mr. Blackwood.”

”Good morning, Mrs. Collins.”

Mrs. Margaret Collins had served the Ashford Foundation for more than twenty-five years.

Long enough to watch generations of volunteers pass through its halls.

Long enough to watch the children of House Ashford grow into the young adults they were today.

She had known Anthony Ashford since he was a little boy following his grandfather through these very corridors.

She remembered Damian Blackwood from those same childhood visits, usually only a few steps behind his cousin.

Years later...

Both young men had returned of their own accord.

Not because anyone expected it of them...

But because they genuinely believed in the Foundation’s work.

Since then, Mrs. Collins had watched Damian become one of the Foundation’s most dependable senior volunteers.

Her eyes naturally shifted toward the five students standing behind him.

”I assume this year’s Project Team has arrived.”

Damian smiled.

”One of them.”

Then...

Without another word...

He stepped half a pace aside.

”Our Project Lead.”

Mrs. Collins’ attention immediately settled upon Vivienne.

Vivienne stepped forward with a polite smile.

”Good morning.”

”My name is Vivienne Beaumont.”

”I’m serving as Project Lead for the Community Resource Partnership initiative.”

”We were hoping to learn more about the Foundation’s existing business partnerships before planning our implementation.”

Mrs. Collins smiled approvingly.

”A sensible place to begin.”

”Please.”

”Come in.”

Peter quietly noticed the exchange.

Once again...

Mr. Blackwood could easily have spoken for the group.

Instead...

He had introduced Lady Beaumont first.

Mrs. Collins led them toward a large conference table before retrieving several folders from one of the filing cabinets.

”Our department currently coordinates twenty-six long-term community partners.”

She arranged the folders neatly before them.

”Some are bakeries.”

”Some are supermarkets.”

”Bookstores.”

”Florists.”

”Tailors.”

”Pharmacies.”

”Restaurants.”

”Every partnership is different.”

”Some contribute weekly.”

”Others monthly.”

”Some participate only during emergency relief operations.”

She opened one of the folders.

”Every organization has different strengths.”

”Our responsibility is finding the most appropriate way for them to help.”

Vivienne immediately opened her notebook.

She began writing.

Dates.

Categories.

Questions.

Connections.

Jessica noticed.

”You take thorough notes.”

Vivienne smiled sheepishly.

”I’ve learned not to trust my memory.”

”So I write everything down.”

Mrs. Collins chuckled softly.

”That’s usually the wiser approach.”

The morning gradually settled into a comfortable rhythm.

Questions were asked.

Records were reviewed.

Maps were unfolded across the conference table.

Peter quietly examined transportation routes and delivery schedules.

Jessica studied administrative procedures and partnership renewals.

Oliver compared annual reports with community needs.

Sophia began organizing recurring patterns between different outreach districts.

Whenever Foundation terminology unfamiliar to the freshmen appeared...

Damian quietly clarified it.

Never interrupting.

Never taking over.

Simply making sure everyone understood before the discussion continued.

Peter noticed.

Once again...

Mr. Blackwood wasn’t leading the conversation.

He was supporting it.

Exactly as a Senior Coordinator ought to.

And yet...

Having worked alongside Damian before...

Peter couldn’t help thinking how unusual it still felt.

Meanwhile...

Vivienne continued asking questions.

Not complicated ones.

Practical ones.

Questions that quietly connected one document to another.

Mrs. Collins pointed toward several districts marked in blue.

”These communities currently receive our regular food partnerships.”

Vivienne studied the map carefully.

Then raised her eyes.

”May I ask something?”

”Of course.”

She pointed toward another cluster of nearby communities.

”I noticed these districts don’t appear to have bakery partners.”

Mrs. Collins leaned closer.

”...You’re right.”

”We don’t.”

Vivienne tilted her head thoughtfully.

”Do we know why?”

Silence settled around the table.

Mrs. Collins looked from the map...

To the partnership records...

Then back again.

Finally...

She laughed softly.

”...Do you know...”

”I’ve never actually asked.”

Peter looked up.

Jessica did the same.

Oliver quietly adjusted his glasses.

Even Sophia blinked.

Damian’s gaze rested briefly upon Vivienne.

...She noticed that already.

Good.

Mrs. Collins smiled.

”I think we’ll have to find out.”

Vivienne returned the smile.

”I’d like that.”

The discussion continued.

One question naturally led to another.

Little by little...

The Foundation no longer felt overwhelming.

Instead...

Its systems began revealing themselves.

The clock struck noon.

Mrs. Collins gently closed the final folder.

”I believe that’s enough information for one morning.”

She smiled around the table.

”The Partnership Office isn’t going anywhere.”

”It’ll still be here after lunch.”

”I think all of you have earned a break.”

Soft laughter spread through the room.

Vivienne carefully closed her notebook.

”Mrs. Collins...”

”Thank you very much.”

”You’ve helped us more than you know.”

Mrs. Collins smiled warmly.

”I look forward to seeing what your team accomplishes.”

The six students gathered their belongings.

As they stepped back into the corridor...

Vivienne looked toward the others.

”I’d like to spend this afternoon organizing everything we’ve learned.”

She glanced down at her notebook.

”Once we’ve done that...”

”I think we can begin deciding which communities should become our first field visits.”

Jessica nodded.

”That’ll also help us identify which partners we should approach first.”

Peter smiled.

”And what resources we’ll need.”

Oliver added,

”We’ll probably need to prioritize the communities with the greatest needs.”

Sophia nodded in agreement.

”Then we can begin preparing our outreach visits for next week.”

Vivienne smiled.

Exactly.

That was the direction she had hoped for.

She turned toward Damian.

”What do you think?”

Damian returned the smile.

”I think...”

”...we have a very productive afternoon ahead of us.”

Vivienne laughed softly.

”I certainly hope so.”

Together...

The six climbed back toward the ground floor.

The quiet rhythm of the Foundation’s operational offices gradually faded behind them.

A few moments later...

The familiar sounds of the Foundation’s entrance hall welcomed them once again.

From somewhere nearby...

The inviting aroma of freshly prepared lunch drifted from the Foundation cafeteria.

Peter smiled.

”...I think we’ve earned this break.”

Vivienne laughed.

”...I was just thinking the same thing.”

Together...

The six turned toward the cafeteria.

Their first morning as a team had only just begun.
