Chapter 52: Chapter 52: the weight of tomorrow

Anthony rested one hand lightly upon Vivienne’s proposal.

”But there is an important distinction.”

He looked toward Damian.

”Lady Vivienne’s proposal refines an existing model.”

”It strengthens a system the Foundation already possesses.”

His hand shifted to Evelyn’s proposal.

”Lady Evelyn’s proposal asks the Foundation to become something it has never been before.”

Silence settled over the room.

Damian met his cousin’s eyes.

”Must transformation always begin with something grand?”

Anthony answered without hesitation.

”No.”

”But truly lasting change rarely does.”

A faint smile crossed Damian’s face.

”And existing systems shouldn’t be underestimated.”

He leaned back slightly.

”Sometimes the quickest way to improve people’s lives...”

”...is simply connecting the people who already have enough with those who have too little.”

He gestured toward Vivienne’s proposal.

”Her proposal doesn’t ask the Foundation to become something different.”

”It asks the Foundation to become better.”

”Better organized.”

”Better connected.”

”Better able to use the resources already entrusted to it.”

He paused before continuing.

”The Ashford Foundation has spent more than a century building relationships with businesses.”

”With landowners.”

”With merchants.”

”With local communities.”

”Lady Vivienne’s proposal makes fuller use of those relationships.”

”It asks us to waste less.”

”To coordinate better.”

”And to deliver help more efficiently.”

Anthony listened without interruption.

Only when Damian finished did he reply.

”I understand your reasoning.”

”And I don’t disagree.”

His hand rested once more upon Evelyn’s proposal.

”But refinement...”

”...is different from transformation.”

”The Ashford Foundation has spent more than a century earning the trust of the people.”

”I believe Lady Vivienne’s proposal honors that legacy.”

His fingers lightly tapped Evelyn’s folder.

”But Lady Evelyn asks us a different question.”

”Not how we can do what we’ve always done better...”

”...but what else we might become.”

The room remained quiet.

Damian considered his cousin’s words before answering.

”And I believe...”

”...the surest way to honor that legacy is to strengthen it.”

”If the Foundation becomes more efficient...”

”If it reaches more families...”

”If fewer resources are wasted...”

”It becomes a stronger institution.”

He paused.

”And stronger institutions are capable of greater ambitions.”

Anthony regarded him thoughtfully.

”So you would strengthen first...”

”...and expand afterward.”

Damian nodded once.

”Exactly.”

A faint smile touched Anthony’s lips.

”I believe we strengthen by expanding.”

James blinked.

The simplicity of the exchange somehow made the disagreement even clearer.

Damian laughed quietly.

”That’s a very Ashford answer.”

Anthony’s smile deepened almost imperceptibly.

”I’ll accept that as a compliment.”

”You should.”

A quiet ripple of laughter passed around the room before the silence settled once more.

Mrs. Bennett looked from one young man to the other.

”Have either of you noticed something?”

Anthony and Damian turned toward her.

She smiled gently.

”Neither of you has argued against the other’s proposal.”

Anthony answered first.

”Because I’m not.”

Damian nodded.

”Neither am I.”

James leaned back thoughtfully.

”Then you’re not really debating which proposal is better.”

Anthony looked toward him.

James continued,

”You’re debating what ’better’ means.”

Silence settled over the room.

Mrs. Bennett smiled.

”Exactly.”

”When Lord Blackwood asked what we were rewarding...”

”...he changed the discussion.”

”We’re no longer comparing two proposals.”

”We’re deciding what qualities deserve to be recognized.”

She looked at the two folders.

”Should we reward the proposal that best strengthens what the Foundation already does...”

”...or the proposal that most boldly imagines what it could become?”

After a long pause, Anthony spoke first.

”If you’re asking for my recommendation...”

He rested one hand upon Evelyn’s proposal.

”...Lady Evelyn Sinclair.”

His answer came without hesitation.

Mrs. Bennett wasn’t surprised.

Neither was James.

From the very beginning, Anthony had admired the proposal’s ambition.

He saw not merely what the Foundation was...

But what it might become.

Damian lowered his eyes to the two folders.

His own answer came just as naturally.

”In that case...”

”...my recommendation is Lady Vivienne Beaumont.”

Anthony looked across the table.

Their eyes met.

For the first time that afternoon...

The two cousins found themselves standing on opposite sides of the same discussion.

James let out a quiet laugh.

”Well...”

”I certainly wasn’t expecting that.”

Anthony allowed himself the faintest smile.

”...Neither was I.”

Damian chuckled.

”I only intended to listen.”

Anthony raised an eyebrow.

”That didn’t last very long.”

A ripple of laughter eased the atmosphere.

Mrs. Bennett looked toward James.

”And you, Mr. Oliver?”

James smiled apologetically.

”I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you.”

Mrs. Bennett tilted her head.

”Oh?”

James folded his arms thoughtfully.

”If Lord Anthony had asked for my opinion ten minutes ago...”

”I might have answered immediately.”

He looked down at the two proposals.

”But after listening to the two of them...”

He smiled helplessly.

”I find myself understanding both.”

He tapped Evelyn’s proposal.

”I understand why Lord Anthony believes this is the direction the Foundation should aspire toward.”

His hand shifted to Vivienne’s proposal.

”And I equally understand why Lord Blackwood believes this is the proposal the Foundation is most ready to undertake.”

He looked up again.

”If I gave my recommendation now...”

”...I’d spend the afternoon wondering whether I’d chosen too quickly.”

Mrs. Bennett laughed softly.

”I’m relieved you answered first.”

James blinked.

”Why is that?”

”Because you have just described my own thoughts exactly.”

She gathered both proposal folders and aligned them neatly.

”I’ve spent years teaching students that the first answer isn’t always the best answer.”

She smiled warmly.

”It would be rather hypocritical of me not to follow my own advice.”

Anthony regarded the two educators quietly.

”So...”

”We postpone the decision.”

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

”I believe we should.”

”The afternoon session may offer another perspective.”

James agreed.

”The presentations are over.”

”But the students’ discussions have only just begun.”

”They’ve all heard one another’s ideas.”

”They’ll naturally continue debating them over lunch.”

Anthony rested his hand lightly upon the stack of proposals.

”And sometimes...”

”...the conversations outside the classroom reveal as much as the presentations themselves.”

Damian smiled faintly.

”I wouldn’t disagree.”

Anthony’s eyes drifted toward him once more.

”...You’re unusually invested in this.”

Damian opened his mouth.

”...Am I?”

For the first time since entering the room...

He genuinely stopped to think.

Why am I here?

He had only intended to satisfy a passing curiosity.

Somehow...

That curiosity had become an hour-long discussion.

How did that happen?

For the briefest instant...

A thought lingered just beyond reach.

He quietly pushed it aside.

Never mind.

He gave an easy shrug.

”I simply thought someone ought to argue for feasibility.”

Anthony watched him in silence for another moment.

Then, with the faintest hint of amusement, he closed the proposal folders.

”...Apparently.”

No one questioned the answer.

Least of all Damian himself.

Outside, the bell echoed through the Foundation building, signaling the end of lunch.

Students were beginning to make their way back upstairs.

Inside the meeting room...

The discussion had ended.

The decision...

Had not.
