Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

This daughter was truly her own flesh and blood!

Song You’ai, who had just been thinking she’d dodged a bullet, picked up the spices she had finished inventorying and stomped off in a huff.

A little later, when Xiao Gu and Lu Wei came over, the baby-faced Zhai Ruobai, that dead weight, also tagged along.

The three of them also hauled over a solar-powered searchlight, which almost made Xie Ning laugh herself to death...

Once they set the light up at the villa’s entrance, it turned out to be surprisingly bright.

Song You’ai then had someone quickly put away the lit candles to save them for later.

Grandma had made a huge pot of tender, gelatinous braised pork, along with roasted lamb chops, stir-fried kidneys, stewed chicken feet, and big plate chicken. In addition, there were seven or eight vegetable dishes, cramming the large round table.

Fifteen people sat around the table. It was a bit of a squeeze, but everyone was in high spirits.

However, they had just sat down to eat amidst the lively atmosphere and had barely taken a few bites when a loud CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! of metal striking metal sounded from outside.

It sounded like someone was trying to hack at their iron gate.

It was rare for the family to have so many people over, and now they couldn’t even eat a meal in peace with their guests. Song Youzhi grew angry. ”Who is it?”

Xie Ning silently put down her chopsticks. ”I’ll go take a look.”

Song Kexin quickly got up to follow, a chicken foot still in her hand. ”Sis, I’ll go with you.”

Who knew what kind of jinx would dare to come to their house and try to break down the iron gate.

The sisters reached the entrance, unlatched the bolt, and yanked the iron gate inward.

A wretched-looking figure immediately stumbled and fell inside.

The sisters quickly dodged to the side, letting the person who had lunged in face-plant on the ground, shattering half a front tooth.

”Owowow.” Li Dawei dropped the hammer in his hand, clutching his profusely bleeding mouth. He slumped to the ground and started cursing, ”How immoral! You people have no decency at all!”

”Brother!” Li Xiang shrieked as she rushed in, a shovel still in her hand.

”Xie Ning, you hit my brother! How are you going to compensate us?”

”Our yard has security cameras. The footage will make it clear whether I hit him or not,” Xie Ning said flatly, staring at Li Dawei on the ground as if he were a clown.

Li Xiang said smugly, ”The power’s been out for half a day. What security cameras?”

”That’s your house. Our house has plenty of backup batteries! How would you know if the cameras are working or not?” Song Kexin huffed, waving the chicken foot in her hand.

”Song Kexin!” Li Xiang stared at her, gritting her teeth.

To be precise, she was staring at the half-eaten chicken foot in Song Kexin’s hand, her eyes turning red.

For someone who had been starving for two days and two nights, the sight of a bite of food was more important than life itself.

Li Xiang gripped her shovel and charged toward Song Kexin. Startled, the latter yelped, spun around, and ran back into the house. ”Aah! Li Xiang is trying to kill me!”

She ran head-on into Ji Taixian and scrambled to hide behind him.

But by then, Xie Ning had already swept Li Xiang’s legs out from under her, sending her stumbling to the ground, completely unable to catch up to Song Kexin.

The shovel in Li Xiang’s hand fell onto her brother Li Dawei’s chest, making him howl in pain.

His girlfriend, Zhao Yingying, quickly scurried over, calling out in a soft, gentle voice, ”Dawei, Dawei, are you okay?”

Li Xiang’s hands and knees were scraped raw. She scrambled up and shrieked, ”Xie Ning, you bitch! How dare you hit me? Ow...”

Her head was viciously stomped down, and Li Xiang followed in her brother’s footsteps, face-planting on the concrete, splitting her lip and making it bleed.

A fierce glint flashed through Xie Ning’s perpetually cold eyes.

When Song You’ai and the others poured out of the villa, they saw their daughter viciously stomping on Li Xiang’s head, one kick after another, as if trying to stomp her brains out just to see what color they were.

Li Xiang lay on the ground crying and screaming, unable to even lift her head under the relentless stomping, let alone fight back.

Ji Taixian swallowed with a GULP and silently took a step back.

Song You’ai and Comrade Xiao Gu, however, deliberately moved around the crowd to find a spot with a clearer view to continue watching.

”Stop it! Stop stomping on her!” Zhao Yingying screamed in terror. ”We just wanted a bite to eat! Why are you beating her to death?!”

Xie Ning retracted her foot and shot the three of them a particularly cold look. ”Get out.”

With her face swollen like a pig’s head, Li Xiang was crying uncontrollably. After being pulled up from the ground by Zhao Yingying, she furiously shook off her hand.

”Are you even human?” Li Dawei clutched his aching chest, pushing himself up to yell, ”We weren’t looking for you! We were looking for Grandpa Song and Grandma Sun. Why did you just show up and start hitting people?”

Song Shijun ran to the gate and took a look. ”Then why were you hacking at our iron gate?”

Thankfully, his sister had apparently reinforced the iron gate by adding a thick steel plate to the exterior.

Now, countless sharp spikes had sprouted from the steel plate, pointing menacingly outward.

The steel plate was undamaged, but Li Dawei and his sister had managed to break off two or three of the metal spikes with their hammer and shovel.

”You people are so evil! You have no neighborly kindness at all,” Li Xiang cried, her face still swollen. ”Back when my grandparents were alive, they looked after your family plenty, didn’t they? Now that they’re gone, you treat us like this, abusing us and not even sparing a mouthful of hot soup or noodles for us.”

Song Youzhi laughed in exasperation. ’For so many years, we really have the Li family to thank for all their ”looking after” us!’

”It’s not like you don’t have rice and cured meat. Can’t you just make something yourselves?”

Li Xiang stomped her foot. ”The power’s out now! The rice cooker doesn’t even work. How do you expect us to cook?”

”That’s hilarious.” Song Kexin burst out laughing. ”Our power and water are out too, you know? If you can’t use a rice cooker, can’t you use an earthen stove? Can’t you even boil some noodles?”

”How do you use an earthen stove?” The siblings were the type to never lift a finger; they couldn’t even use simple things like a rice cooker or an electric wok, let alone start a fire and cook on an earthen stove.

”You have to chop firewood and gather branches! Who knows how to chop firewood? And who can even go outside at a time like this?”

Song Kexin wanted to retort that the two young masters from Beijing had learned to chop wood, but she held her tongue. There was no point in wasting any more breath on an idiot like her.

They only ever thought about relying on others, completely incapable of living on their own.

It had only been two days, but their clothes were already wrinkled and starting to give off a sour stench.

’Uncle Li and his wife were gone, leaving behind a nest of useless dependents who couldn’t fend for themselves.’

Seeing the tense atmosphere, Zhao Yingying quickly wiped her tears and stepped forward, bowing deeply to the two elders of the Song Family. ”Grandpa Song, Grandma Sun, we’re sorry to bother you. We were just so hungry, that’s why we came uninvited.”

”Could we bring some rice, flour, and vegetables over, and just ask you to help us cook them? Is that okay?” The girl was slender and willowy, with the delicate air of a willow in the wind, looking quite pitiable.

Song Youyi reached up to adjust the frame of his glasses and said in a cultured tone, ”It’s not impossible for us to cook for you. But we have a lot to do in our own home, so helping you cook would have to be a paid service.”

”For example, if you bring over twenty jin of rice, we’ll cook ten jin for you. The remaining ten jin will be our service fee.”

The Old Song Family crowd: ...

Song Shijun: ’My dad is so ruthless!’

Song Kexin: ’My uncle is an absolute legend.’

Xie Ning: ’My uncle is powerful and imposing.’
