Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

”Aren’t we going to be transferred to a safe zone sooner or later?” Song You’ai asked, rather confused.

”When can we be transferred?”

”I’m not sure.” Xie Ning shook her head.

’According to the course of events in my past life, it should happen in about ten days.’

’But now that I’ve been reborn, many things have subtly changed.’

’So, Xie Ning couldn’t guarantee that the troops would actually make it to the Song Family Pavilion to evacuate them within ten days.’

’And now, with a large group of people clinging to Xiao Gu and his men, refusing to give up and determined to follow them...’

’To be honest, the Song Family Pavilion probably won’t be very peaceful going forward.’

”My apologies.” Gu Chen smiled helplessly. ”It looks like all these survivors will have to flood into the Song Family Pavilion to settle down for the time being.”

Xie Ning shrugged nonchalantly. ”It’s fine, as long as they don’t come looking for trouble with us.”

’She just wanted to live her quiet little life in peace. If some fool really tried to start something with her, well, she, Xie Ning, was no pushover.’

”Later, I’ll electrify the top of your wall. That’ll make it safer.”

Xie Ning thought this was an excellent idea. ”Then I’ll have to trouble you, Captain Gu.”

”It’s no trouble at all. A small thing like this is nothing.”

”Captain Gu, can your Thunder Power charge a cell phone? In an emergency, could it make a rice cooker work?”

’After the apocalypse, power and water were cut off everywhere. She remembered that if an Electric Ability User had good control, they could indeed be a source of electricity.’

Gu Chen: ...

Lu Wei burst out laughing. ”Probably, but the Captain would need to practice first. Otherwise, if he connects the power and makes the rice cooker explode, that probably wouldn’t be good.”

By the end, Lu Wei was cracking himself up.

”Then you’d better hurry up and practice.” Xie Ning assigned Xiao Gu his first task.

”Then... then I’ll practice for a while.” Gu Chen readily agreed with a nod.

Beside them, Song You’ai was dumbfounded. ’A superpower really is that useful, huh?’ She was green with envy.

Lu Wei chuckled. ”Captain, from now on, all the brothers’ phones will depend on you for a charge.”

Gu Chen shot him a look.

Just as the car reached the entrance of the Song Family Pavilion, they could see more than a dozen soldiers armed with live ammunition guarding the gate from a distance. The security was tight.

Seeing this, the young translator in the white suit quickly turned and jabbered a few words to the people from R Country, his previously dejected expression completely vanishing.

’Thank heavens, they were smart enough to follow Captain Gu’s group of well-trained soldiers here.’

’Look at the size of this village!’

’Although it’s empty and bleak, every household has its own detached house, which means excellent privacy.’

’Besides, though it’s remote, the environment of green hills and clear waters is pleasant.’

’And now, with the military stationed here to protect it, as long as they have food, meat, and drinking water, they could live here forever!’

”We demand special protection! We are foreigners and should receive special treatment,” one of the men from R Country declared righteously in very stiff Mandarin.

The driver, a woman in her early thirties with short hair and sunglasses, couldn’t help but laugh when she heard this. ”Special protection? What are you, a panda? A national treasure? Anymore nonsense and I’ll toss you all out, got it?”

The man from R Country was furious. He turned his head to look at the silent Takayuki in the front passenger seat. ”Doesn’t your Country C always pride itself on being a land of courtesy and propriety! With this attitude of yours, I can file a complaint against you!”

The short-haired woman flared up. ”I’m telling you, if you keep running your mouth, I’ll slam on the brakes and throw you out right now!”

The young translator in the white suit hurriedly tried to placate the enraged man from R Country, jabbering repeated apologies.

”Just focus on driving, ma’am. You don’t need to pay them any mind,” Takayuki said, also feeling quite helpless.

’Earlier, when they were negotiating with the drivers, they had all reluctantly agreed to take a couple of people from R Country, but every car wanted a soldier to ride along as an escort...’

’...making it seem like they were transporting war criminals, which left Lu Wei and the others not knowing whether to laugh or cry.’

”Alright, for your sake, I won’t argue with them,” the short-haired woman nodded. ”This guy from R Country is way too full of himself!”

’She just couldn’t stand the sight of that white-suited translator bowing and scraping like a dog.’

’What a disgrace. Instead of being a proper human being, he was willing to trail behind the R Country people like a dog.’

’What kind of times are these, and he’s still busy sucking up?’

The convoy of vehicles slowly came to a stop at the entrance of the Song Family Pavilion.

Du Zhonggang quickly ran over with two soldiers, freezing up when he saw the long line of cars.

”Xiao Gu, what’s going on?”

’How did he go out for one trip and come back with over a dozen carloads of people...?’

Gu Chen jumped out of the car. Without wasting any words, he had his men drag Yang Yiling out and toss him in front of Du Zhonggang like a bag of trash.

Yang Yiling was really something else; he’d been unconscious for over three hours and still hadn’t woken up.

If the kid had been able to wake up and take care of himself, Gu Chen wouldn’t have bothered dragging him back.

He only did it for Mr. Wu’s sake.

Du Zhonggang was speechless, but he had no choice but to reach out and support the slumping Yang Yiling, whose head was lolling and whose breath was as faint as a silk thread.

”How did Captain Yang get so badly injured?” ’This is going to be a little hard to explain to the Old Yang Family!’

”He’s lucky to have made it out with his life,” Gu Chen retorted irritably. ”You didn’t see what it was like back there.”

”Old Du, I’ve brought the person back for you. Remember to tell those folks from the Yang Family that they owe our special ops team a huge favor. One they’ll have to repay in the future.”

”Yes, yes, yes, yes.” What else could Du Zhonggang say? He could do nothing but nod repeatedly.

Gu Chen patted Du Zhonggang’s shoulder. ”I’m telling you, we risked life and limb, pulling this Young Master Yang out from a pile of zombies!”

”Yes, yes,” Du Zhonggang forced a bitter smile.

”As for the original members of Team B, I’ve absorbed them into my unit. Hurry up and get the handover paperwork done for us, so no one can gossip.”

”Don’t let them say I’m stealing people from Young Master Yang without justification. I, Gu Chen, wouldn’t stoop to such things. You know my character.” Gu Chen patted Old Du’s chest a bit too familiarly and gave him a wink with his charming eyes.

Du Zhonggang felt the urge to punch someone.

’What’s this damn brat trying to pull, flirting with an old uncle like me!’

”Hey, Xiao Gu, you brought back so many people, are you going to...”

”You figure out how to settle them.” Gu Chen had no patience for these messy affairs.

Leaving this one sentence behind, he hopped back into the driver’s seat, sped off in Xie Ning’s little car, and left Du Zhonggang with nothing but a face full of exhaust.

Du Zhonggang was so angry he stomped his feet on the spot.

’That little brat!’

’What does he mean, ”figure out how to settle them”? How am I supposed to handle this sudden influx of people?’

Just then, the translator in the white suit ran over with seven or eight people from R Country. ”Hello, hello, sir! We’re from TON Electronic Components.”

”These are all key personnel sent from our head office in R Country.” The young translator pointed to the middle-aged man who could speak broken Mandarin. ”This is Mr. Matsubara Daiichi. This time, we...”

Before the translator could finish, Du Zhonggang nodded and turned to give an order, ”Register these survivors’ information and give them a physical check-up.”
